Dear Dchen (WMF), Welcome to MediaWiki.org!

Yes, welcome! This site is dedicated to documenting the MediaWiki software, the software behind many wikis, including that of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Foundation projects.
Please, take a look at the following pages. They might prove useful to you as a newcomer here:

If you have any questions, please ask me on my talk page. Once again, welcome, and I hope you quickly feel comfortable here, and find this site useful documentation of the MediaWiki software.

Thanks, and regards, --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 00:54, 4 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

License stuff

[edit]

File:Heuristic Evaluation of media picker, ve on desktop.pdf has a note about a missing license. I believe that all WMF staff contracts specified CC-BY-SA 3.0 as a default when we were hired, so that's an option if you don't have a preference. I understand that Legal likes CC-BY-SA 4.0 better. thanks! not sure how best to append it after the fact; do i need to re-upload to go through the workflow? Dchen (WMF) (talk) 19:33, 28 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

No, that sounds totally unnecessary. I'd just edit the page and spam in the usual Commons-style template at the top:

{{Information
|Description=
|Source=
|Date=
|Author=
}}

and fill in the blanks with something sensible ("Own work" for the source, your name and/or username as the author, etc.). Under the basic information template, I'd replace the current tag with a license template such as {{Cc-by-sa-4.0 }}. It shouldn't take more than about five minutes, even allowing some time to overthink everything. ;-) WhatamIdoing (talk) 19:46, 28 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Also: Then do the same thing at File:Heuristic Evaluation of visual editing on mobile (Oct'15).pdf. That's the only other thing you've uploaded to this wiki that has a license tag. WhatamIdoing (talk) 19:48, 28 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for making that backlog a little smaller. (Also, I was reading your research results! Enwiki's going through another phase of "just make them tick a box saying that they're not lying scum or whatever", and it reminded me of Cross-wiki upload project. I found your slide deck when searching for information about image uploads.) WhatamIdoing (talk) 21:16, 28 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
