Is MediaWiki a monolith?

Nice essay, thanks for writing it. A potential way you could expand it might be to discuss your thoughts on how monolithic or not monolithic MediaWiki is. I assume our extensions system is helping to break up the monolith, but that there is room for further improvement? Could also talk whether you think that being a monolith is good or bad (probably bad I'd imagine), and how important it is to break it up or not break it up.
