Contribution to Charts

Hi Chris,

How are you doing? How's the charts project? I would like to contribute to the charts project with interactive chart editors and potentially the project in general.

Specifically, I was looking at the Band Members' timelines on band pages when I realized they are generated PNG images. I was wondering why you don't use SVG instead. After some digging, I found out that they are made with the EasyTimeline extension, which you plan to replace with a new Chart extension.

I was thinking that for this specific use case, I could create a web app where you enter the band members and years in a visual editor, see the preview right away, and export the SVG code or the metadata in the format you need.

About myself, I'm a big fan of SVG, published a site called SVG-Tutorial.com and I like making interactive web apps. On the other hand I never contributed to open source in any major way, so I'm not sure how this works. I think this could be a good starting exercise.

So what do you think?

Hi @HunorMarton, sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner. I'm glad to hear you're interested in contributing to the charts project.

We are not currently planning to replace the EasyTimeline extension with the Chart extension, but it may be a potential future enhancement (see phab:T137291). Charts are currently being built with Apache eCharts so we are not constructing the SVG ourselves right now. If you're interested to read more about how the extension is architected, please see the Architectural Decision Records. Timeline for reactivation of charts

I appreciate your messages here: Chart/Project/Updates. It would even be better if you could go deeper in the assumed progress: When will which functionality probably be available in which language.

Patterned codex..

I'd like to make a request that consideration be given to a Codex for 'monochrome' so that sites if they wish can provide a pattern based design language for users with color-vision/perception differences. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 14:16, 11 July 2025 (UTC)

Hey @ShakespeareFan00, are you asking about an alternative color mode for Wikimedia wikis (hosted by WMF) or for 3rd party wikis / websites that are using Codex?

If you're using Codex for a 3rd party wiki or a non-wiki site, you could add your own color mode (see the architectural documentation here). You can check out the current Product & Technology Department Annual Plan for the most up-to-date strategy and focus areas for WMF teams in the coming year.
