Desktop improvements. A new change![edit]

Hello

Within the next couple of weeks, the Wikimedia Foundation Web team will introduce the sticky header, a feature that is a part of the Desktop Improvements project.

The sticky header will allow users to access important links (like the watchlist, log in, talk page, etc.) without requiring them to scroll to the top of the page. If you want to check how the almost-done version works, add ?vectorstickyheader=1 to the URL. See an example.

The first version of the header will only be available for logged-in users. Also, it will not contain the editing buttons ("Edit"/"Edit source"). This is because we need more time to ensure it is compatible with the VisualEditor. Later, we will improve it.

Why we are changing this

Currently, many functionalities are only available at the top of the page. On long pages, editors need to scroll a lot to access these functionalities. At the same time, readers are not able to search or switch between the languages.

You can learn more about the future improvements and how to help us.

Gadgets' compatibility

The first version of the header will not be configurable. Later it will be possible to add custom buttons to the header.

Some gadgets and user scripts might need to be updated or might become redundant or obsolete. We provide support for users who would like to maintain the compatibility. See the dedicated documentation.

Let's work together

Thank you!
