Context
[edit]IP Auto-reveal enables users with extended rights (Admins and above) to display all IP addresses associated with temporary accounts for a limited time period. The permission to automatically reveal IPs is temporary and session duration is set by the user. The UI makes it clear when the user is in IP Auto-reveal mode and users are informed when the session is about to expire and can choose to extend if needed.
Options considered
[edit]We considered various places in the current UI to add the feature, including:
- New icon in personal bar to enable/disable feature and indicate status
- Link in tools menu to enable/disable (no status indicator)
- Enable feature in appearance menu
- Link in tools menu and icon in personal bar to indicate status
- Link in tools menu and top bar to indicate status
- Link in tools menu and bottom-right panel to indicate status

Decision
[edit]We will add a link in tools menu to enable/disable auto-reveal mode, and show a status indicator in bottom right tools area. See https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F58222984. This is because:
- The tools menu and bottom right area are intended to be extensible
- The tools menu works reliably across skins
- User feedback found that a persistent status indicator, ease of access and reliability across skins were important
Consequences
[edit]- Using auto-reveal mode, users can easily see IP addresses of temporary users without needing to click buttons, while doing patrolling investigations.
- Users can easily control auto-reveal mode by:
- Enabling and disabling the mode from the sidebar menu
- Seeing when the mode is enabled via the bottom-right tools area
- Adapting the end time via the popup from the bottom-right tools area
