I am trying to learn how to create and manage Phabricator projects, but when trying to create a component I get  “You can not select this edit policy, because you would no longer be able to edit the object” although I had no option to select the edit policy.

@KSiebert (WMF) Can you please share a link / URL which exact page you are on when this happens? Thanks.

@KSiebert (WMF) Ah... "Editable By" on that form has been set to "Trusted Contributors" (probably because of past vandalism) and you were not a member of that project. I've added. Could you please try again? Sorry for the confusion!

Weirdly enough, I don't see this option. I only have Name, Description, Icon, Color, Additional Hashtags, Initial members, Source Repo. Actually what I really want to do is to create a project within a group.

Yes, the "Editable By" field is intentionally hidden in that form as folks cannot edit it anyway. But that doesn't make it very obvious either in this case...hmm, hmm.

How would I work around the fact that it's hidden?

I'm not sure I can follow... could you please elaborate what's the underlying problem that makes you care about the Edit Policy of a project? Thanks!

KSiebert (WMF) (talkcontribs)

Oh, the problem is that when I get the warning “You can not select this edit policy, because you would no longer be able to edit the object” it doesn't actually let me create the project (component) so that I stay stuck in that step.

I guess there are two options - one is to relax the default "Edit Policy" of new projects back from "Trusted-Contributors" to "Anyone" again (which I'm not in favor of), the other one to improve the error message to explicitly mention in the error message that the custom Edit Policy in Phabricator requires you to also be a member of #Trusted-Contributors in order to be able to create new project tags.

However, taking a step back, do you still see this error message when trying to create a project? Because I hope not...

It's good to have that error message, when the field isn't hidden, if the default is "Trusted Contributors" then it doesn't makes sense as one gets stuck. So I agree adjusting the error message would make most sense.

I was able to create the project now, thanks!
