FYI
Having trouble enabling VisualEditor, I suddenly realized SELinux might be the cause. So I ran
# setenforce 0
which did the trick. Digging further,
# setsebool httpd_can_network_connect 1
and enabling selinux again, was enough to use VisualEditor
