Breaking the problem up into topics

One approach may be breaking the problem up into large topics (e.g nature, science, buildings etc) and possible things like area of the world, this might help in a couple of ways:

  • Allows new users to work on an area they have some working knowledge of a topic of e.g I would have a high confidence in adding images to articles about buildings but not about scientific concepts. This would hopefully increase accuracy of images added and allow people to contribute to an area they're interested in.
  • Potentially allows us to draw on the millions of high quality images collected by Wiki Loves competitions or images from the collection of a partner organisation who have donated sometimes millions of images e.g Wellcome Collection.

Breaking the problem up into topics makes sense. This would help new editors to properly add caption to images and narrow their works to areas or topics they are familiar with or have expertise.

At the moment, the Growth Suggested Edits tool allows people to filter task by topics. Newcomers can filter articles about Transport needing copyediting. :)

@John Cummings -- thanks for bringing up this idea. As @Trizek (WMF) says, letting newcomers select topics of interest is already part of the Growth feature set, and would be part of an image recommendation workflow. Right now, we offer 39 topics to choose from, and we believe users like topics: about 75% of users who work on suggested edits choose some topics before they get started. Here's an image of what it looks like for newcomers. What do you think?
