App interfares with CX2

Anyway to add emergency halt button anywhere? When I try translating pages via Contect Translation2, aka CX2, by ContributionsTranslation → input article title and choose language pair, push "Translate";

  • iOS app opens but it can’t handle the process.
  • No way to return to Safari or FF as no bottom tool bar shows.

To abort the process, the only option I can think of now is to delete the app from my iPhone. That resolution rips me off chances to contribute to this app which is very age-free. As I told to my elderly kins to use, I feel responsible to assist those who improve a tool. You know, the baby boomers are so happy to use it.

Thank you, @Omotecho. I've made the team aware of this.

@Johan (WMF) wow you knew I was translating your link (;. I experimented the instruction therein, then slipped into an air pocket... Under Wikimedia Apps/IOS FAQ (on mobile) and section "#How do I STOP iOS from opening Wikipedia links automatically in the app?", second item, it tells:

  • 2. When iOS opens the link from Safari in the app, use the "wikipedia.org" button in the upper right of the screen to return to Safari, and stop it from automatically opening links in the app in the future.

I guess it is not talking about tha App on mobile devices, as on contents page, I see no "wikipedia.org" button in the upper right of the screen, but only see the "W" button at top-center, which jumps to "Home" screen. I ventured to open "Setting" per cog wheel, but did not find anyway to null auto link from Safari.

Are we looking at the same picture? iPhone 6S plus, iOS 13.7, model MKU72J/A.

Haha, yes, I actually did say "I'm pretty certain this user already knows this since I know they know technical documentation well" in the internal chat when I reported this problem to the team, but I figured I'd mention it just in case. (: Now that you say it, I'm a bit confused by that part too. I’ll look into it.

Anyway, I tried reproducing your problem and get around it, and this was the simplest, quickest solution for me: I long-pressed a Wikipedia link to get the options of where to open it (open, open in new tab, open in ”Wikipedia” (the app)) and picked open, then went to my contributions, then to CX2.

I created a video to illustrate, but don't think it's worth uploading to Commons. It's currently in Google Drive open to anyone but if you don't want to access it there I can upload it wherever you prefer, if it would help you.

I think part of the problem here is that CX2 isn't really made for mobile, and thus wasn't taken into account, whereas the next version, CX3, is mobile first. This isn't an excuse, merely an explanation – obviously the problem exists, since you've encountered it.

You are so kind to offer a video, that is the best way to learn (: (y) I have no worry about Google Drive, and pls keep it there till you see me have a peep. And great update about CX3: so many users, esp with locked in new normal, have come across CX2 on their browsers, I sense.

(Doodle) I would look forward for any productivity update on how much CX2-created pages we have gained between March and September 2020: as how indoorish lifestyle has driven CX2 up to people’s radar, so to speak, to be productive and expanding their horizon of knowledge. Could be an indicator how thirsty we are for new knowledge as homo smartphoneus/tabletus, nevertheless of the pressure under pandemic, and how inventive people are to "share" what they read on Wikipedia into their mother tongues.

You can check Special:CXStats on any Wikipedia to see that. (:

(Edit: And check "per week", that'll give you the best overview.)

@Omotecho Checking in, did this solve your problem? I mean, it doesn't actually fix the bug, which has been noted, but is it a functional workaround for you for the time being?

Omotecho (talkcontribs)

Thank you for your ping, @Johan (WMF), and yes, changing to desktop view to continue CX2 is a trick I came up myself. You encouraged me to try and find when that workaround works/not works either you have Wikipedia App running on the background or not.

  • I tried to note what differs when W app does/doesn’t interfere with Safari or Firefox, but came up with no reasonable pattern.
  • I deleted Wikipedia app, reinstalled, but nothing improved.
  • So I deleted the app as the last resort. Appreciate very much for your support, belated report that case "closed" for me with you reportingvthe bug. Cheers,
