Follow Help:Locating broken scripts and fix the broken line in MediaWiki:Common.js, basically.

Is this the correct place to ask for help for https://el.wiktionary.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Edittools ? It does not function. The charinsert> does not work, and we have noone who can correct https://el.wiktionary.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Common.js Thank you! Sarri.greek (talk) 09:25, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

@Sarri.greek Hi, clear steps to reproduce are welcome. I guess this is about editing a random wiki page with the default text editor, clicking an item in the edittools at the bottom, and the icon does not get inserted? Or something else? Also see Help:Locating broken scripts

Oh! someone answered! how nice. I have been looking for help since https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/Archives/2020#Edittools_at_el.wiktionary Oh dear: This is a very weird page: I cannot [ add a link to call you. [ [User:Malyacko] ] There is something poping.... never mind.. Thank you. YES, it is like the problem they had in 2017 at https://fr.wikiversity.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Common.js&diff=prev&oldid=692871 but not only for mathematical symbols.

We are a small wiki with 2 bureaucrats: the interface one is gone: The rest of us know nothing about computers. I know it is that charinsert thing. < charinsert > will not work, but span charinsert will not work either. I have compared

https://el.wiktionary.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Edittools and https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Edittools and I have tried https://el.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Edittools&diff=prev&oldid=4503163 and then, https://el.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Edittools&diff=next&oldid=4503163

I could understand that all this material is duplicated and also handled at https://el.wiktionary.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Common.js which is archaic, and I compared with https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Common.js but they also use https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Gadget-Edittools.js

Obviously most of our Common js is deprecated. There is noone to fix. It has to be a global interface.. what's his name. I was hoping that all these things are not wiki-specific. That it is done by someone above individual wikprojects. I am so sorry, I do not want to bother people with small things. And even if someone fixed that charinsert, I would still have to edit both Edittools AND the Common js, with every detail, But I cannot: I cannot edit it. It will not allow me to edit. Thank you for your attention. https://el.wiktionary.org/wiki/Χρήστης:Sarri.greek UTC 17:58, 2020.04.29

@Sarri.greek Please see Help:Structured Discussions and simply use the thing that is popping. :)

As I explained, you need to edit one line in https://el.wiktionary.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Common.js. I don't see why you need to edit Edittools. See Special:MyLanguage/Gadget kitchen which is linked from meta:Small_wiki_toolkits : It says that Interface administrators can edit MediaWiki:Common.js. You can see the list of interface admins for your wiki on :el:wikit:Ειδικό:ΚατάλογοςΧρηστών/interface-admin. If they are not active anymore then please follow the meta page.

Thank you, https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Malyacko I see from your userpage that you may, perhaps let 'people above' know what is happening in small wikis. Please, sir, if you can, forward our cry for help to the appropriate board of directors

(parenthesis https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Structured_Discussions is too difficult and long for me, sorry)

Dear Sirs, (Subject: small wikis. Date:2020.04.30.)

The numbers of statistics of small wikis (like our el.wiktionary) are misleading: bureaucrats or admins who have, and we are grateful to them, contributed during the period 2006-2016, may log in once or twice a year and never respond to our calls.

This means that there are approximately 4-6 active editors: old people -mostly- who know nothing about computers. The 'board of directors' is asking from us to study programming, Lua, java, wikitext.  This is not possible. One would expect a 'global' maintenance or programming, fixing things. updating.

The help provided by the excellent Mr. Andre Klapper (https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Malyacko) is addressed to people who know a thing or two about computers.

We are isolated.

Thank you in advance, https://el.wiktionary.org/wiki/Χρήστης:Sarri.greek (UTC) 2020.04.30. 18:03

@Sarri.greek Please explicitly mention/ping me when replying, otherwise I might not see your reply. There is no "board of directors", see https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Small_wiki_toolkits for what's closest. You do not need to "know a thing about computers": I explained which exact line you have to fix, and how. I also mentioned that interface admins need to perform this action. Again, please see https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Interface_administrators#Requests how to find someone to fix this. Thanks! :)
