A scrollbar for Table of Contents

I'm not sure about the right place to post this. I found this place after I posted at the Pump in English WP, here.

I felt mobile view was ignored in favour of the app which I definitely think has a way lower userbase. I have this basic UI feature in mind, which is just what the app has. The persistent scrollbar for the Table of Contents. The summarise what I raised there: "the lack of an easy way to scroll through the Table of Contents for any decently sized article. Try it on mobile view, it's horrible. The app, however, has that nice scroll bar: which is persistently present as you read and can collapse, showing the relevant (sub)sections for even quickly jumping to. You won't get lost in an article wondering how to get back to a said section that was on your mind."

Besides this, I'm kind of lost here. One: how do I test Advanced mobile contributions, the main page says it's not deployed yet but it's in Beta? Two: Have I put my above UI suggestion in the "right" place?

Hey @Ugog Nizdast — thanks for your feedback. I'm a designer on the Readers Web team at the Wikimedia Foundation. If I understand your message correctly you are wondering why on mobile web it isn't easier to access the table of contents from anywhere in the article, and jump to a new section? We actually started working on this problem last spring and you can read about it here: Reading/Web/Projects/In-page Navigation. If you have feedback on the designs posted there I encourage you to open a thread on the talk page.

If I misunderstood your question please clarify. Thanks again.

Yes, this is what I was asking. Thanks.

So besides feedback, is there way I can test this Beta feature*?

Edit: Very interesting your work, good to see it being planned.

Edit2: *I mean in general, the Advanced mobile contributions feature.

Edit3: Posted my feedback there.

Apologies for my slow reply. Currently the Advanced mobile contributions mode is only available on Spanish, Indonesian, and Arabic Wikipedias. If you're comfortable with any of those languages please try it out there. We would love to hear your feedback.

I regularly edit English Wikipedia by my smartphone. The current mobile version is not suitable for editing at all. I don't know those foreign languages, but would like to try it out on English Wikipedia. Please at least make it available as a beta feature.

Agreed, I would like a beta too.

@AHollender (WMF: Can we get an estimated timeline for the rollout of this feature?

AHollender (WMF) (talkcontribs)

@Darylgolden @Masumrezarock100 good news: we've been making a lot of progress with Advanced Mobile Contributions mode over the past several weeks and are hoping to release it to all wikis (still as an opt-in feature for logged-in users), by mid-August. Of course things could change, as there are often unforeseen delays, however that's our current target. We will certainly make an announcement on the main project page once it's up : )

Thanks for the update.

Hmm. Looks great on Japanese Wikipedia. But it's still not released to English Wikipedia. Eagerly waiting for the update.
