Moderately severe UI problem (with quick fix)

I like VE, but it's terribly slow on my old laptop, so I use source editing for quick changes, editing code, or editing large pages. But I've enabled VE in my preferences for editing tables and such. Here's the problem: For ten years or so, I've had to click a link that says, "Edit" to edit the source page of articles. But with VE enabled, "Edit" no longer starts the source editor, it launches VE instead. With years of unconsciously training my brain to click "edit" for source editing, I often find myself clicking the wrong link in the section/page links ( Edit | Source Edit ), and then having to wait 15-30 seconds for VE to load and then cancel out of VE and go back to click "Source Edit". Also, if you change the preferences setting back and forth to enable/disable VE, the function of links and the terminology changes back and forth. Very frustrating!

Quick fix:

Change the system message(s) for the link that launches VE from "Edit" to "Visual Edit" (or "Visual Editor"), so that the page and section links look like this: "Visual Edit | Source Edit" That way it's stable and unambiguous as to what you'll get when you click a link irrespective of whether the VE pref is enabled or not. ~~~~

Thanks for your feedback. Based on your use case, it seems to me that the most convenient solution, at least at the English Wikipedia, would be taking advantage of the VisualEditor/Single_edit_tab system. Select "Always give me the source editor" in your preferences, and have only one tab that goes to the source editor; you can switch to the visual one from the toolbar button only when you need it.

Sparkie82, have you tried this? If you almost always want to use the older wikitext editors, then you can have that be the only option displayed. Then, when you want to edit a table, you open the old wikitext editor and click the pencil icon (far right corner of the 2010 WikiEditor's blue toolbar) to switch into the visual mode.

Yes, that works much better. Thank you.
