Selection buffer "pastings" are rich text and mess up syntax colouring

Recently I selected the title of a Wikipedia article to selection-buffer-"paste" it into a link on a separate talk page using mouse button 3 (middle-click). However the h1-style formatting was also "pasted", and from then on it was like the editor had two layers, the syntax-coloured text including the header-formatted title, and plain text behind. They even scrolled separately and it could not be fixed until the page was reloaded (my work was lost). It seems VE uses `contenteditable`, which needs additional code to behave so that it ignores formatting (anyone who wishes can test this fact by making an opening a bookmark with URL data:text/html,<html contenteditable>).

Selecting an article title in the visual editor/2017 wikitext editor though isn't possible ATM. And which talk page would that be, are you editing it with the 2017 wikitext editor? Would you mind describing the issue again by listing the steps to reproduce and examples? TYVM!

Arlo, were you in the visual mode when this happened? Did you have syntax highlighting enabled? And is it still happening?
