Topic on Talk:Content translation

Not sure if I am describing some kind of horrendous bug or the system is somehow broken in design, so let me start by describing what I was trying to do and where I wound up before throwing in a suggestion or two with the constructive intention of making things better...

There is a list of information that I wanted to share with a friend. My friend is not so fluent in English, so I wanted to look at the other language link (of the three that were offered, one was my friend's language) and consider sharing that Wikipedia page. Clicking on that link did NOT take me to a corresponding page or translated page, but to a "Translate page - Note..." webpage. That confusing webpage was extremely slow to finish loading, but at the top had some links to similar pages (which led back to the English page) and at the bottom had some links for pending translations apparently heading to English (from the other language). None of this was helpful to my purpose, but I thought I might try to help Wikipedia by working on one of the pending translations. Unfortunately there is no automatic translation support and I am not so fluent in that language, so all for naught. (I was pleasantly surprised to see some colorization support for the corresponding phrases, since I suggested that feature long ago, but mostly I was just frustrated and disappointed and annoyed. Again.)

Suggestions time? Fix the translation system or make it less intrusive. Bigger suggestion, let me (and other interested people) help pay for the costs of developing new translation features or for the ongoing costs of supporting existing translation features. DSAUPR, atAJG. ~~~~

Made another attempt (actually about my fifth today) and got looped even worse... If I was younger and more idealistic, I might even see that as an incentive to seek or create a better option than Wikipedia. Even in the search for the best truth, competition is not a terrible idea, eh? Maybe such a competitive incentive would go so far as to help Wikipedia improve faster? ~~~~

Which page was it? I'm not sure that I understand the description of the problem.

Sorry I didn't catch your reply and now I don't remember what list it was. However I've been in the same place several times, often with lists. Either I'm in the Japanese or English page, and there seems to be a link to the other language, but when I click it, I either wind up nowhere or with partial translations that I can't even work on... Mostly just frustrating and baffling, but I mostly feel like I'm somehow missing the entire point.

What do you mean by "I can't even work on"? I'd love to help, but I need to understand the problem.

Sorry, I don't visit Wikipedia that often these days. My fuzzy recollection is that I used to care much more about Wikipedia than I do these days... Seems like another great idea that got too weird for me.

As for my meaning, it seems obvious enough. I wanted to try to fix the translation and couldn't do it. Maybe I'm just too stupid to figure out how it works, but the basic idea of working on a translation is that you are trying to make the meaning of some text in one language be as close as possible to the meaning in the other language. I don't remember the details now, but most likely there was a Japanese passage that I was trying to translate into English or check the accuracy of an English passage that purported to be a translation of some Japanese passage.

I don't remember the details now, but I know that I've tried to use the translate tools on Wikipedia a number of times and never succeeded in doing so. The entry point seems simple enough, so I actually think it's some kind of permissions or configuration thing. Other times it just feels like the translation pages are totally broken, but that could be just a visible effect.

My Japanese is not great, though it was good enough that I was paid good money to repair the English writing of Japanese experts for many years. I got too old for the big company and was forced to retire from the research lab, but my brain doesn't seem to be completely broken yet. I imagine that there used to be a time when I could have been enthusiastic about helping a project like Wikipedia now that I have more leisure to do so, but...

If you ever try this, please let me know where are you stuck.

As I said, my enthusiasm around Wikipedia has mostly been sapped. I hope I can remember this conversation and how to find it the next time I have an "encounter" with the translation system. If so, I'll let you know the initial point of failure while it's still fresh in my mind.
