A few minutes ago the newest version of the RC filter system was released, and it has removed the 'Show new changes starting from xxxx' button. This is not very helpful. I have used this to show the most recent edits without having to press refresh, which is really slow because the whole new system has load up again as well. Even I did refresh, all past 50 edits are shown, I only want to see the most recent. I'm not sure why such functionality was removed.

It is indeed not that helpful for your case. I'm asking.
In the meantime, you can try the Live update option. Append &liveupdate=1 at the end of the URL. You will then have all updates arriving every 3 seconds, and a marker will show you the one you haven't seen. You can click on the marker to dismiss it, it will reappear with the next batch. It may help.
There is a fix ready, pending validation.

FYI, the live update system causes Lupin's popups to get stuck, in the sense that when I preview a diff with the popup, it fails to disappear when I move my cursor away.

Live updates system will have some improvements deployed this week, and then, they will be a bit more stable. This is the opportunity to make some tests to see what's wrong on the cohabitation between the live system and the gadget, to see how to improve both.
