Usage on external wikis

Is this "feature" part of VE extension now and if so which version? Does it require WikiEditor extension to work? Would it still require RESTBase service?

I sadly see nothing mentioned about it on Extension:VisualEditor page and it wasn't stright forward finding this page as well.

From 2017 wikitext editor, "The 2017 wikitext editor is a mode within Extension:VisualEditor that allows users to use the visual editor's tools and toolbar while editing the wikitext source code. It is accessed from within the visual editor by clicking the button in the toolbar to switch to wikitext."

@CalNation: "Is this "feature" part of VE extension now".

Perhaps in plainer English:

This feature has always been part of Extension:VisualEditor.

VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode is in relatively recent versions (only). I think that the earliest versions that might contain it are from about August 2016. However, you probably wouldn't want to consider anything older than, say, December 2016, and the latest or next-to-latest version is better (so, maybe MediaWiki 1.29/wmf.20 or later).

Is that what you need to know for now?

So I'm using MW1.28.2 (as I'm recommended to do), using the corresponding extension version and I can say that for sure it's "there." However, enabling it actually on that version creates some weird behavior (sometimes clicking edit source gets me to the old editor and sometimes to this new wikitext editor). Also, and please correct me if I'm wrong, it seems that it still requires RESTbase server to save content in between editors transfers.

We had a problem on the wikis with the 'wrong' editor loading. Most of those were put down to user scripts/gadgets, and the problems did seem to clear up when the scripts were updated. Have you tried the steps at Help:Locating broken scripts to see whether you have any Javascript problems?

(I don't know whether it requires RESTbase, but perhaps someone else will.)
