Topic on Talk:Customizing MediaWiki for beginners

The manuals for customization here on MediaWiki are incredibly confusing to me. If anyone can help to elaborate this nontechnical guide for customization, please do! I can only add very little myself, due to lack of technical expertise. I am essentially customizing MediaWiki slowly by adding CSS through trial and error. Changing the background color is already covered on Manual:CSS so I propose to delete this page. We do not need more pages with documentation, we need less pages with better and updated content instead. :)

It is not covered there or anywhere else on MediaWiki.org. I have been searching on Google for days, and no one has a clear answer on how to do this, despite skins available that have the background color changed (e.g. and ). I have resorted to painstakingly going through the CSS of the "DarkVector" skin line by line through a trial-and-error process to try to isolate which MediaWiki attributes correspond to which parts displayed in the MediaWiki interface. If someone could make a formal list, it would be hugely appreciated. And I don't see a redundancy in having both technical and nontechnical explanations for MediaWiki. "Nontechnical" here means that no PHP, JavaScript, or FTP is needed for customization, and any user with a MediaWiki account can edit using just HTML, CSS, and MediaWiki markup. Anything that requires scripting, modifying PHP, or FTP access to the server would be in the main "technical" article instead. It also means that the content here is written in a simple step-by-step format that can be easily followed and copied. Nicole Sharp (talk) 16:07, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

I appreciate any efforts to improve documentation, and I strongly strongly recommend to improve existing documentation instead of writing more pages disconnected to existing documentation. So Manual:CSS should be improved instead of creating another page.

I relabeled the article as "for beginners." I understand your point, but from my own experiences on MediaWiki.org, I would even argue that there is a need for an entire series of new MediaWiki.org articles specifically written for beginning users without a strong technical or programming background. Other Wikimedia projects have a similar redundancy of articles to target audiences of differing skill levels. Ideally, we should have MediaWiki manuals simple enough that any high-school student can easily set up their own MediaWiki installation using free tools, with minimal technical knowledge required. If you think that having multiple articles on the same topics, written for audiences of differing skill levels, is outside the scope of MediaWiki.org, then perhaps it could be moved to Wikibooks instead, e.g. a "MediaWiki for Beginners" that introduces MediaWiki markup and MediaWiki development in a simple step-by-step format specifically designed for nontechnical or beginning users. wikibooks:MediaWiki Nicole Sharp (talk) 13:58, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

I think also that trying to combine introductory-level information into otherwise highly technical and comprehensive articles can be very overwhelming for new users who do not understand PHP and other technical aspects of MediaWiki. I think there is a high value in having specialized articles specifically written with content intended just for individuals who are new to running MediaWiki and do not have a strong technical background.
