Supporting Embedding WMS/TMS Layers?

Is there any thoughts on supporting embedding WMS or/and TMS layers? This would be very useful in articles where for example historic maps could provide context to an article. Such layers could be provided by for example Commons through Wikimaps Warper. I believe that there is many articles that could benefit from such a feature.

@Yurik (WMF) we would relay like to investigate this for the Warper IEG, I personally intend to create a userscript to locally showcase the possibilities with this type of feature.

Tell me more about how you could see layers being used! This sounds interesting.

The map tiles are served from warper.wmflabs.org

The example linked by @Susannaanas is a good example of original(historic) content being displayed on a interactive map, allowing other perspectives to be visualized.

I believe there is a lot of both articles at wikis and content on Commons that could benefit from such a feature.

Hopefully I can get a cool and useful showcase done over the upcoming weekend.

Isn't TMS the same as the regular tiles we have? WMS does have some interesting features, but it seems like it covers most of what geojson does, and unless it is fundamentally different or I am missing something, I would really love to keep to as few formats as possible, and offer an easy way to convert the data to one format when saving. Otherwise we will have the same mess we have with the WP API - which allowed (thanks to my shortsightedness) 8 different output formats that we now have to support instead of improving them.

@Yurik, it's the same. But I would like to have the possibility to add a second layer on top of the default one from sources such as the Warper. No need to add support for new formats.

@Abbe98:, this all depends on the location of the data. For security and privacy reasons, no wikis can access any data outside of the WMF production servers. Which means the Warper needs to store the data somewhere on the wiki itself. We definitely want to be able to store such data on wiki, but need to figure out how. On the other hand, TMS implies there is another tile service - but the only allowed service like this would be our Kartotherian maps tile server, so we still need to figure out how to serve that content.
