Hi there, I have a blank page when I access the translating tool. I really like the app and desperately need it to translate? I have the same problem on any of my mac computers. Help!

It sounds like a JavaScript error. Which browser are you using and which wiki is this happening in?

No it's not: I tried setting up a new account with the same computer, and the app works with this new account.

There have been similar issues in the past due to user scripts or gadgets. So you may want to check if the issue happens when using a new account. If that is the case, you can try to identify which is the problematic gadget.

@Nattes à chat That is right. But before that perhaps you can let us know which wiki you are seeing this problem in as there may be known scripts or gadgets that are causing the problem and we can guide you towards a solution. Thanks.

I'm using it on the French Wikipedia. I am participating in a virtual edit-a-.thon and would really need the tool to be operational now...

The strange thing is that when i click on the language links I ca access the tool, but not all the time. For e.g. I can access the translating tool for Corinne Chaponnière in german (but as no link is defined for english I cannot access it)

Hello @Nattes à chat Sorry to have kept you waiting on this. When you say the language links, are these the gray coloured links in the interlanguage area? If so, then that list is collapsed to primarily show languages you have read/edited or set as browser preferences. Is it possible that you may have not accessed English Wikipedia much around the time when you were trying to translate the page Corinne Chaponnière? Thank you.

actually no nothing works. When I click on on translate a blank page appears.

Is this on Firefox?

wether on firefox or safari makes no difference: blank page

Check also if this page is really blank. Sometimes the text hides very fare down. So you should also check your scrollbar on the right side.

nope : the text is not hidden far down. just a blank blank page. Sorry!

I tried to set up a new account to see if it works with this one, and yes it does, so it has nothing to do with my navigator.

@Nattes à chat ah, so it worked normally with the new account? That may indicate some scripts or gadgets that may be interfering with your regular account.

@Pechristener text hiding far down is something new for us. Can you please share some more details about this? Thanks.

for some reasons it produces large blank area for nothing.

@Runab WMF what gadget could be interfering? I really want this translation tool back badly!

Hi @Nattes à chat, identifying the specific gadget may take a bit of effort remotely, but possibly you can check this ticket https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T132361 for some clues. If you could also share some console output that may help narrow things down. Perhaps could you check to see if the ticket first and then we can follow up from there? Thanks.

I think I will try removing all gadgets one by one and checking the translation toll after. Will tell you what comes out of it.

So this gadget "RecentChangesBox : ajouter une boîte dans la colonne de gauche qui affiche les 10 dernières modifications récentes mises à jour toutes les cinq secondes."is causing the problem. i've checked twice: when I tick this box in the preferences - gadgets, the translation tool appears as a blank page.

Now why is that is the next question!

I created this ticket to capture the issue and track it. As I indicated in the ticket these errors tend to be caused by the gadget code assuming that the page will contain some specific elements (e.g., links on the sidebar) without checking for them first. If some of those elements are not present, as it is the case of Content Translation, the whole page loading process stops.

This kind of issues are normally much harder to find than to solve. So thanks for your help with that, @Nattes à chat.
