Publish button stopped working

35
Summary by MisterSanderson

The problem was that there is a local block for YouTube on Portuguese-language Wikipedia. The Content Translator didn't knew that, and so couldn't provide an explanation to why it could not publish. Since some months ago, there is already an alert for this case.

MisterSanderson (talkcontribs)

Hello. In Portuguese Wikipedia the "publish" button is doing nothing when clicked, except by turning gray...

MisterSanderson (talkcontribs)

Hm, appears the problem is limited to one specific translation... w:en:Tape loop -> w:pt:Loop de fita. I published another translation today without this problem happening.

MisterSanderson (talkcontribs)

I could publish now, after removing the YouTube link as @Nikerabbit suggested. The problem is: Content Translator gave me no warnings that was the YouTube blocking the publishing all this time!

Hi @MisterSanderson , we saw another user face this problem earlier with a few particular pages. During the testing session we asked him to create a new users account and check if it occurs. It turned out that some particular part in the user's common.js file interfered. Perhaps if you could check the same for your account as well? Thanks.

MisterSanderson (talkcontribs)

I don't want to create another account, because i would need to translate the article again, and the creator would be other person. It's not possible to simply check this javascript?

Ixocactus (talkcontribs)

Hi! I have this problem too. I can't publish a finished translation from en to pt, Aroup Chatterjee. Thanks!!!

Ixocactus (talkcontribs)

I have cleaned my common.js and the global.js, but the problem persists. The button turns gray and the finished translation isn't published. :(

So this can either be interference from the following sources:

  • MediaWiki:common.js
  • MediaWiki:<skinname>.js
  • User:<username>/common.js
  • User:<username>/<skinname>.js
  • A gadget
  • A browser extension

Or it could actually be a failure in our code. Or it could be just a network timeout. Or it could be related to specific browser (version).

It is not possible to say more without further details. Is the problem consistently reproducible with a given article? If so, it would be really helpful if you could open the JavaScript console from developer tools and see if there are any error messages there.

@Runab WMF, I'm tired of waiting for a MediaWiki solution. It's been months!

May I just copy the translation content and paste in a new article?

Nikerabbit (talkcontribs)

@MisterSanderson both Eye Level and Causescu's final speech contain links youtube which are not allowed in Portuguese Wikipedia. Those links are blocked by AbuseFilter. You should be able to publish those translations by finding and removing the youtube links.

Would you be able to take a screenshot when publishing fails? We have implemented code that is supposed to alert you about these issues even before you try publishing. I am curious why those alerts are not visible to you.

I tried to remove youtubelinks from my translation of the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Do-it-yourself_biology to portuguese but I couldn't publish this way. I've already given up on a 4 hour translation. Why are youtube links banned from pt-b wikipedia? Is there anyway this situation can be reversede ( youtue videos allowed) with general public consultation or so?

MisterSanderson (talkcontribs)

Tiago, people in PT-Wiki believe that YouTube is used to spam frequently and there is no guaranteee of protection of copyright. So they banned the site.

Victor Lopes (talkcontribs)

I'm also unable to translate any page. en:Tammy Wynette, en:Karen Matheson, en:Victoria Newton... none of them work. I'm not even able to start translating, as soon as I go to any article, click on "Português", and then on "Translate from English", the screen goes all grey except for the user menu to the top.

Runab WMF (talkcontribs)

@Victor Lopes this is quite odd. Can you perhaps capture a screenshot next time this happens? Also which browser are you using? And does this happen in other browsers too? Thanks.

Victor Lopes (talkcontribs)

Firefox is my default browser. I've just tried using Google Chrome, but results are the same. Here is a screenshot of me attempting to translate en:Saudades do Brasil.

Victor Lopes (talkcontribs)

UPDATE: I've just made a minor discovery. When I get the gray screen, if I hit the "back" button and return to the previous page, I am taken to the proper translating page! I've just translated en:Saudades do Brasil and it kinda worked. "Kinda" because there's another bug happening, but I'll talk about it at this topic.

@MisterSanderson, my team mate @Nikerabbit responded to you earlier requesting for a screenshot. Are you referring to any other question? Sorry, if I missed it.

MisterSanderson (talkcontribs)

@Runab WMF, my question is this: "I'm tired of waiting for a MediaWiki solution. It's been months! May I just copy the translation content and paste in a new article?".

Runab WMF (talkcontribs)

Hi @MisterSanderson, I am sorry I could not fully understand this part. If you are asking if the content can be copied over to a new article from inside Content Translation, you will not be able to get the wikitext version for pasting. But I don't want to recommend a solution when I am not completely sure I understand the question. However, I was wondering if you will have some time (say about 30 minutes) to meet with me and @Nikerabbit, so that we can fully understand all the problems that you are facing? We have had similar sessions in the past and they have been highly beneficial to solve problems faster. Thank you.

MisterSanderson (talkcontribs)

@Runab WMF, what I wanted to know is if I can just copy the text I translated, paste it into a new page, and delete the translation from Content Translation, as I see it will never be possible to publish the ones that gives me errors. @Nikerabbit was already on this thread and recommended me some tests, but I don't want to make them.

Runab WMF (talkcontribs)

Hi @MisterSanderson Oh ok. So I understood correctly, but the inconvenience of that solution worries me. Ideally, we would prefer to solve the problem so that there is a workaround from inside the tool itself and users don't have to find ways to bypass existing errors. However, the AbuseFilter related blockers are still being worked upon. Until that time if you prefer to copy over the content, I am wondering if an alternate solution will work. What if you publish the page under your userspace and copy it over from there? Thanks.

MisterSanderson (talkcontribs)

Good idea, trying ot publish on another title.

I will try. If this does not works, I will proceed with my plan.

MisterSanderson (talkcontribs)

Perfect, now there is an error message when trying to publish a translation that includes YouTube:

"An error occurred when publishing your translation. Please, try again. Error: {"spamblacklist":"youtube.com/watch?","result":"Failure"}"

I will no more try to guess why the button does not works.

Runab WMF (talkcontribs)

Hello @MisterSanderson, that is an abuse filter rule from the wiki you are publishing to, that is throwing that error. Can you please check again after removing the youtube link (which seems to be the problematic bit) and see if it allows you to publish? Thanks.

MisterSanderson (talkcontribs)

I said above many times, replying to @Nikerabbit, that removing the YouTube link allows the publication. But, at that time, there was no error message yet!
