Renaming account

Summary by MModell (WMF)

Renaming accounts in phabricator is highly discouraged. If the account hasn't been used at all then it can be renamed, but the easiest solution is to disable the old account and create a new one.

I recently got my Wikimedia account renamed from DSGalaktos to Galaktos. Now my login at Phabricator still works, but my account there is still named DSGalaktos. Can that be renamed as well?

I'll just post the content of the warning that Phabricator shows to admins when they click on "Rename user":

The old username will no longer be tied to the user, so anything which uses it (like old commit messages) will no longer associate correctly. (And, if you give a user a username which some other user used to have, username lookups will begin returning the wrong user.)

It is generally safe to rename newly created users (and test users and so on), but less safe to rename established users and unsafe to reissue a username. Users who rely on password authentication will need to reset their password after their username is changed (their username is part of the salt in the password hash). The user will receive an email notifying them that you changed their username, with instructions for logging in and resetting their password if necessary.

(we don't use password auth (at least for normal users) so that part doesn't apply)

I haven’t done much on Phabricator, just a few comments on tasks. Perhaps I should create a new account instead?

MModell (WMF) (talkcontribs)

Creating a new account is probably better, in general, renaming accounts isn't a good idea.

How do I create a new account? My old account is linked to this Wikimedia account, and Phabricator refuses to unlink it because it’s my only authentication method – but I can’t seem to add any other method either…
