This feature often uses entirely unhelpful images, because it pulls the first image from the page other than the one in the infobox, which is usually the most important and appropriate image. Instead, it often grabs something incidental, like a graph. While obviously we don't want it to grab icons from {{ambox}} templates and such, we do want it to get the image in an infobox, and failing that the first one provided in the body by [[File:...]] or [[Image:...]].

It's using Extension:PageImages to select the image. There are a few tasks open about selecting a file manually (Phab:T91683), and about making the auto-selection better (various).

I don't know enough about PageImages to know why it would not use the first image in the rendered page. My guess is it's pulling from the source, so it just sees transclusions as text like {{Infobox cat breed| ...}}

I agree that the image preview needs to automatically select infobox images and images at the start of the article much more often. Many articles on companies, books and fonts, for example, do not default to the cover image (a company logo, say) in the infobox when they should. And others seem to avoid the first image for no obvious reason.

it is mentioned in the intro that the first pic may not be used because of size issues. but yes appropriate images should be used for easier navigation through the site.

Does unfortunately not work correctly with all infoboxes. Examples:

De:de:Col_des_Mosses (hover over the box Befahrbare Alpen-Passübergänge in der Schweiz at the bottom)

De:de:Kategorie:Erdbeben_in_Italien (hover over Erdbeben von Friaul 1976)

Is there still a bug in the hovercards or are the infoboxes (or the articles) malformed in some way?

The English page for Mont Blanc is also a good illustration of the problem described here. Instead of showing the image of the mountain from the Infobox, it displays a very poor relief map of Europe which is used later in the article. I have tried to alter the order of the images in the article, but without success. ~~~~.
