Add editor buttons (not VE)?

I don't use the Visual Editor yet and I wonder how I could add buttons for formatting, links and embedding images.

I use Monobook as default skin so I'm down with a simple layout :)

Do I have to hack it myself?

The other task, about purely wikitext edit tools, which I plan to re-open soon (because 78346 is kinda confusing and discusses too many things), whenever I get time to do it properly, is phab:T90052
