Usability observations

I have tried the Content Translation Tool. It works fine so far, and if I may suggest some improvements and report some issues that I've been facing:

  1. Right now, links cannot be moved around. If I select-copy a text containing a link and paste it in another area of the text, the link is gone. I would like it to be preserved. This is an important use case for people who translate between languages with different word order: one may want to change the order in which two links appear in the text.
  2. I can't append or prepend text to a link and extend the link over it. I have to always edit in the middle of the link. Any text that is appended or prepended is placed outside the link. I realize that the other way around would be an even worse nightmare, but a more usable way would be to make only pre-/appended text made up of alphanumeric characters extend the link (not whitespace and not symbols)
  3. While I realize that for the first version, editing parameters of templates is not available yet, but some may be quite important, such as: w:en:Template:Quote or w:en:Template:Cquote.
  4. Some links are not identified correctly: the resulting link has the title from the original language instead of the new one. It doesn't happen always, and I can't detect a pattern. It may have something to do with links pointing to redirects.
  5. It would be nice if, when publishing a translation, the tool would also add the local version of the w:en:Template:Translated page to the new article's talk page.
  6. Also, it would be nice if links that do not exist in the target wiki would be put in the translated text with the local version of w:en:Template:Interlanguage link. I know this may not be to everyone's liking, so I'm thinking it should be enableable on a per-user basis.
  7. I would like to have a possibility to add a no-break space in the text and to format numbers according to language settings (magic word formatnum).

Thanks for the feedback. These are all relevant observations.

  1. Currently the tool supports plain text pasting which has some limitations. We plan to improve it to preserve links and other relevant markup (check this ticket for more details).
  2. Editing link labels is a bit tricky, we are exploring options along the lines of what you mentioned in this ticket.
  3. We have a general ticket for improving templates, but the quote examples seems relevant so I created a specific subtask for it.
  4. While link targets are based on wikidata, the link text is
  5. We got some requests on marking translations. At the moment, translations are marked with the "contenttranslation" edit tag (you can filter recent changes to get the recent ones). That will also allow the community to get a more clear idea about the quality level and the need for marking it more explicit that the content was created as a translation.
  6. We are working on providing better support to create red links. Once we check how that works (we hope it will also encourage users to translate those), we can consider keeping them as an interlanguage link.
  7. At the moment, the main focus of the tool is to adapt the existing content to create an initial version of the article in a different language. Editing or creating complex content is not the top priority since it is always possible to further edit the article afterwards. Having said that, adapting number formats across languages for example seems in scope and a nice suggestion (I created a ticket for it).

Thanks for trying the tool and the useful feedback!
