GSoC proposals namespace

Replying quickly here for now: the problem with recommending candidates to create their proposals in the Main namespace is that a nice % of these proposals won't make it as a project, and will be abandoned in a few weeks. I think it is better to create these pages in the User namespace, and then move those belonging to accepted projects, when they are accepted. What do you think? The lesson learned points in the direction of pages called "GSoC proposal".

"Userfication" of failed proposals however is a common wiki practice. Having them as user pages means making them harder to find for months while they are proposals and are most in need of feedback... In addition finding a home for a project in the wiki is also a way to find a home for the code. Oh well, you decide.

No, in fact you decide. You are dealing with mediawiki.org more than me, and for a much longer period. You also have a better track than me sorting out GSoC pages. If you think the right thing to do is to create these proposals under Main, then let's do it.

Ok, then I've made a couple edits that will hopefully address the issues you mentioned: . You were right that I was perhaps a bit too simplistic, and I'm not saying it will be heaven of course: there may be small conflicts over what pagename to choose or multiple people claiming the same title.

However, it's IMHO worth trying because students really must not work in insolation from the rest of the community and codebase. We don't have enough energies to actively go after each of them to integrate them, we have to "release them in the while" and see what happens. :)

Nemo_bis, one reason to prepare proposals in your user namespace is that more than one user can apply for the same project idea. If the first one tahes the good title/URL, then the rest are left with weaker options.

There is no need to touch any proposal pages now, but if you agree on the principle then please revert the changes you made.  :)

Now that selected projects were announced, it took only 26 minutes to userfy failed proposal and publish successful ones. There were no title clashes (all redirects kept), so I don't think there was big conflict caused by the namespace choice. On the other hand, poorly defined ideas often have bad titles.

Hello Qgil, Thanks for the message. I've been thinking about GSoc for a month or so, but I can't really come up with an idea to execute over the summer (much less so through a Wikimedia-based project). My previous couple programming projects have been long-term, interdisciplinary studies between bio and machine learning for EM-image processing, but this does not seem appropriate for a GSoc project. I can try to apply but... I'll need some ideas to ponder and dissect. I only have 2 days though. Thanks, Hansmeet
