Inflexible image sizes

I am concerned that the image resizer sets the image size in pixels rather than implementing the flexible upright tag (or something equivalent). The upright tag is more reader friendly by keeping images in the neighbourhood of the user's prefered size range. It is thus the scaling method recommended for images not included in templates, at least on Swedish Wikipedia.

I agree.

See w:Wikipedia:Extended image syntax#Size, and m:Help:Images and other uploaded files#Options (and a small mention at Help:Images#Syntax) - for the relevant docs about the "Upright" parameter.

Related bugs include:

  • bugzilla:50379 (Do not add size for standard thumbnail images),
  • bugzilla:47804 ("Thumb" images should display in user-preference thumb size if exists, then fall back to local default),
  • bugzilla:38129 (Dialog to manipulate image properties (type, alignment, border, size, caption, alt text)),

I was quite pleased with the insert-an-image dialog (although we clearly need the updates in bug 38129) except that the resulting image was forced to a size of 150x150 px, entirely contrary to en: MOS. The value of 150 is changed from that of 225 mentioned in bug 50379: why not just get rid of the explicit size?
