What is the future scope for this extension to be used across WMF? It was implemented in enWP this past week, but there is little in the way of information about how and why it came about. Whether it will be used in a broader space or not. Can anyone eludicate? Thanks.

You might have a look at Bugzilla:35981. The extension is going to replace the old special page Special:Disambiguations by the new speical page Special:DisambiguationPageLinks, which is implemented in a more efficient way. For this purpose, the definition of disambiguation pages has been changed:
- Special:Disambiguations traets pages as a disambiguation page if it contains a template that is listed in MediaWiki:Disambiguationspage
- Special:DisambiguationPageLinks traets pages as a disambiguation page if it contains the magic word __DISAMBIG__ (this magic word is included using the templates difflink).
