What about eliminating another subdomain:

doc.wikimedia.org ---> wikitech.wikimedia.org/docs

The /docs (or /doc) subdirectory is quite conventional and it could have the same header/footer as the rest of Wikitech.

MediaWiki core docs should be under mediawiki.org. Puppet docs should be under wikimedia.org. VisualEditor docs should probably be under wikimedia.org as well, at least for now.
