How do I enable API?

There are notes that adding this extension adds an API module however after installing the extension I get Unrecognized value for parameter 'prop': onlinestatus when I try to use it...

If you aren't using MediaWiki 16 or older and if you didn't change API settings you shouldn't get problems.
