Legend for each rating (1-5 stars)

I think it would be great if we had some kind of legend for every possible notation. For example

  • 1 Star : Very Bad
  • 2 Stars : Bad
  • 3 Stars : Okay
  • 4 Stars : Good
  • 5 Stars : Perfect

The legend could be shown with a "hint" when hovering over the different star notations. I think this is very important since some people will interpret "1 star = okay" and other "1 star = very bad". Furthermore, when you have no legend, people tends to give a more "extreme" rating with a lot of "1 stars" and a lot of "5 stars". (example at the Chrome Web Store )

The options could be text-only and randomized. This would force the user to really read what each means and select the fitting one.

That would be very confusing. Normally none of the options really fits, but the order and wording gives a hint on how the scale is supposed to work. This is not exact science. Especially on the English Wikipedia there are also lots of readers who do not get the nuances of the wording, which makes the problem even worse.

I didn't mean to randomize the text itself, only the order. But you can ignore my comment nontheless.

Heavens no! Randomizing it is an invitation to errors. There have been many studies that show people remember the location more than the text, and that visual orderings are best. If they are randomized, may as well throw them away for they will be full of errors. Even better would be to color the stars with Gold the best, etc. History2007 23:11, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

For best result they should mention the category being rated:

  1. Not X
  2. Somewhat not X
  3. Neither X nor not X
  4. Somewhat X
  5. X

Where X is any of "trustworthy", "objective", "complete" or "well-written"--BTW can anyone point me at the discussion where was decided on picking these particular four categories? I'd love to see some rationale for it.

And of course the descriptions should be reworded a littlebit because "Somewhat not well-written" sounds like crap :-P

The legend should appear directly below the stars, and change as the user changes the star-rating.

Implementing this is very important in order to ensure the most consistency amongst ratings.
