Category[edit]

Can we find a category for this notice? This is not strictly a MediaWiki matter although it's a Wikimedia matter, so we'd usually put it in m:Category:Wikimedia Foundation technical notices. I don't know from the top of my head whether there is a suitable category here. --Nemo 07:30, 23 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Wording clarification[edit]

I need help with understanding the message.
This unblocks some future work on upgrading the servers to a new Operating System release and will also allow the use of improved internationalisation in the future (as wikis will then be able to use features introduced by the new ICU release such as new collation definitions, and allows us to use a more recent version of Unicode in MediaWiki).
I'm not sure I understand what here is the subject for "allows". "Wikis will be able to use", but what "allows us to use a more recent version of Unicode"? Or should it be "this unblocks some future work ... and will also allow ... (...), and allows us to use ..." — and the parentheses are closed in the wrong place? -- Ата (talk) 16:51, 9 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello Ата
This upgrade will have two effects. The first one is for wikis, that will be able to use new sorting features. The second effect is for OPs, that will be able to change the version of Unicode (no direct impact on wikis though). "Allows" is combined with "the Operations team" there.
Now I realize that this sentence is not really clear. Seeing the number of already existing translations I won't change it today, but I will change it for the next upgrade.
Thank you for pointing it out! :) Trizek (WMF) (talk) 16:05, 10 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
I've updated this now, splitting the long sentence into two, and clarifying the subjects. I hope that helps! Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 21:22, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
