Goals

I think this app could be a good tool to get people to use their time more usefully than on some other platforms. However, our goal shouldn't just be to have people use more time here. We need to ascertain that what we offer is actually useful. That aspect should be included in the goals declaration. We want them to actually get interesting in history, not just in historic trivia, and we don't want this to be one more distraction from their actual real-word life. I think this is possible, but if we don't include those considerations in the design goals and metrics, we are on a dangerous path. –LPfi (talk) 07:33, 28 May 2025 (UTC)

Thanks for raising this, it’s an important perspective.

While it’s difficult to measure deep learning or long-term interest due to privacy limitations, we did see some encouraging signs that the game is leading to meaningful engagement. For example, we observed positive metrics around users sharing game results, reading related articles, and adding articles to their reading lists. We also saw a notable number of new account creations during the test period.

These behaviors suggest that the game is not just a distraction, but also a gateway to exploring more encyclopedic content. That said, we fully agree that our design goals should continue to aim beyond screen time alone, and your comment is a helpful reminder of that.

Licencing

Hello!

This game is a good idea, and it is well made. It works fine in French. Congrats!

However, there is no people credited for the work, coding or writing the sentences. Could you please include some mention of the CC BY-SA licence and some words about the content made by humans (and not by an AI)? Noé (talk) 07:59, 31 May 2025 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing this out—it’s a good point. The content in the game is based on Wikipedia articles, which are under the CC BY-SA license, and we agree that it should be clearer in the app. We created a Phabricator task to improve how licensing and content attribution are displayed:

I really enjoyed this. I think it should be made slightly more clear that all the events are Today in History type events. I thought that was really cool, but didn't realize until after I read the project page on this wiki. I was surprised to see the game in an app like Wikipedia, but it was a pleasant surprise. Other game modes?

Are there any plans/issues about other mini games? For example, Wikipedia speedracing of going from one article to a specified other article or knowing which subcategories of a certain category a few articles belong to etc etc. Prototyperspective (talk) 22:56, 18 June 2025 (UTC)

Those are great ideas. Right now, we’re focusing on the current trivia game, but other game modes are definitely on our roadmap. In the meantime, you might enjoy exploring Wiki_WIP, where the community shares creative experiments, including games based on Wikipedia content.

Is there a page that has this list? And I don't know why the user wrote "possible" articles. I think the best most useful most educational game would be quizes about some subset of articles; eg articles in some category. A game that was featured in the Wikipedia25 birthday celebration video was guessing which article exists in more languages. However, for all the games it needs to be considered whether the time spent on them is time wasted or time learning interesting things or things about Wikipedia or similar. That's another reason for why I think quizes with AI-generated questions that can then vetted by volunteers for whether they're good questions and have correct answers would be best. Speedracing could help people learn navigating Wikipedia as well as potentially about interesting content. I have another idea about it: there could be a mode by which what counts is not the time it took you but the number of steps needed to reach the other article where you get a countdown of say 30 seconds per article that you can use to find the best wikilink for the next step. Add view scrolling?

I use an Android device with a 9:16 screen ratio and 350px smallest width (the elements appear slightly bigger than default that way). Playing the Trivia game, many entries don't show all the text in the card due to limited screen space, and there's no scrolling. I wish the view was scrollable and the text in the cards didn't cut off because it makes playing the game unpleasant. Terrestrial being (talk) 10:59, 23 June 2025 (UTC)

Thanks so much for this thoughtful feedback.

We’ve received similar reports from other users, especially those on smaller-width Android devices. In response, we added a scroll bar to the question cards so users can scroll and read the full text. However, after hearing that the scroll isn’t always visible or obvious, we’re now working on making it more noticeable, so users don’t have to “discover” it in order to read the full question.

Really appreciate you flagging this. Feedback like yours is what helps us keep improving the experience.

My Personal Feedback

The game seems very nice, thanks for the effort of making it =)

I guess one way to improve it is to widen a little the window of time between the two events shown at the AB Test. Much of the ABs showed to me differ only by 1 year of occurring, and while this is ok for contemporary events I cannot feel the same for a 1-year difference for most events in the 19th (or maybe even the 20th) century backwards. They 'feel' effectively "at the same time" and it's frustrating to see a question like this was poised at all, like a trickery just for trickery.

Just to explain a bit more — the Wikipedia Trivia Game automatically pulls real historical events from the “On This Day” pages on Wikipedia in each language. The events are then randomly paired to create each question. That means the game sometimes includes events that are very close in time, such as just a one-year difference, because both appear on the same date in history.

So even when two events are close together, they’re still valid pairs that come directly from Wikipedia’s real historical data.
