Enhancing Wikidata Integration: Updates on the Wikidata Bridge Project

[edit]

At WMDE, we are committed to improving the integration between Wikipedia and Wikidata. Wikidata Bridge, a project designed to enable direct Wikidata edits from Wikipedia, is part of this effort. Initially developed by Wikimedia Deutschland (WMDE), the Bridge underwent a minimal viable product (MVP) release and was tested in Catalan Wikipedia.

Currently, the feature is temporarily disabled as the team evaluates next steps.

Addressing Challenges in Wikidata Integration

[edit]

Recent research conducted by the Wikidata for Wikimedia Projects team highlights key challenges faced by editors:

  • Lack of Transparency: Many editors struggle to understand which parts of Wikipedia content originate from Wikidata, limiting trust and adoption. Solutions include clearer indicators and change summaries.
  • Complex Integration Processes: New and experienced editors alike face barriers in effectively using Wikidata, from technical complexities to community policies. Enhanced explanations and guidance can help bridge this gap.
  • Difficulties in Contribution: Contributors often find it unclear which properties are essential for different entities. Providing structured visual guidelines will improve data quality and consistency.

We believe that it is important to tackle the challenges faced by editors in a systematic and incremental way.

Strengthening Transparency Through Watchlists

[edit]

A primary focus for 2025 is enhancing watchlist functionalities to alert Wikipedia editors to Wikidata changes affecting their pages. Ensuring that editors understand and can act on these changes is a critical step toward deeper Wikidata integration. Our goal is to have wikidata changes in Wikipedia turned on by default.

2025 Goals & Objectives

[edit]

The Wikidata for Wikimedia projects team will be contributing to the strategic goal of strengthening infrastructure and key objectives include:

  • Raising awareness and understanding of Wikidata integrations through training and multilingual documentation. Join us during our Wikidata and Sister Projects event from May 29th to June 1st.
  • Supporting at least one Wikimedia project in effectively integrating Wikidata data.
  • Making it easier for Wikipedia editors to monitor and respond to Wikidata changes, targeting a 3.5% increase in monthly Wikidata/Wikipedia co-editors by the end of 2025.

Focusing on the Watchlist and raising awareness around Wikidata integrations in Wikipedia are necessary preconditions for reviving features such as Wikidata Bridge. This is because they are critical steps in the workflows of editors. Wikipedia editors need to be able to monitor the changes that Wikidata introduces to their work. Once we have sufficiently improved transparency and usability of WIkidata’s data on Wikipedias, we intend to move on to areas that make contribution easier for them, such as the Wikidata Bridge project.

Stay tuned for further updates on the Wikidata Bridge and related initiatives! Please leave your comments and questions below.

Thank you, - Danny Benjafield (WMDE) (talk) 11:52, 24 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for this commitment.
Just a small reflection on Wikidata Bridge. I think one reason why Wikidata Bridge has not been successfully adopted yet is because it focuses only updating data. In practice, data rarely needs to be updated, and if it is necessary, it is done en masse using robots or tools such as QuickStatements. (Also, vast vandalism on Wikidata is by changing data.) I believe that extending its functionality to populating Wikidata with fresh data could be benefited from on both ends. (Imagine a filtered "view" of the Wikidata item where only properties relevant for the given infobox are shown/suggested.) I also wonder if this could be reworked into a visual editor plugin. It could support features like preview of the infobox without having to save edits I might not be satisfied with. And it would work when users hit "edit" on the page.
