What happens if the software can't set the temporary-account cookie?
What does the software do if it can't set the temporary-account cookie at all (for instance, if an editor's browser is configured to block all cookies)? Will this prevent the person whose browser the software can't set the temporary-account cookie in from editing entirely? Whoop whoop pull up (talk) 01:53, 20 February 2025 (UTC)
- Hello @Whoop whoop pull up, thanks for the question and apologies that it took so long for us to answer. According to our engineers, such user would be able to edit, but they'd be assigned single-use temporary accounts, getting closed after each action. Because there is a rate limit for temp account creation (8 edits per IP per day), more frequent editing would quickly become quite inconvenient for such users. My recommendation for them would be to create a permanent account, which also gives the best privacy protection. SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 13:10, 2 April 2025 (UTC)
- Before, I read 6/temp accounts/IP/24 hours; is that now 8? (Not a typo?) @SGrabarczuk (WMF) Jules* (talk) 13:19, 2 April 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks @Jules*, you are right, it was a typo. It is six temporary accounts per day per IP. SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 13:28, 2 April 2025 (UTC)
- And of course, when the IP editing occurs from a school or library all editing will be shut down within a matter of minutes. 92.19.76.204 19:50, 3 April 2025 (UTC)

rollout plans
Is this still going to go ahead, if so when? Do we have a date yet for WIkis such as EN? WereSpielChequers (talk) 12:39, 30 March 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, and it's already in progress, it has been enabled on several wikis late last year. The date for further deployments doesn't seem to have been set yet, but once it is, it should appear in the list on T340001. Matma Rex (talk) 17:55, 31 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the answer. Do we have any feedback from the communities that have introduced this, is it making it harder to catch vandals? Is it effecting editor recruitment? WereSpielChequers (talk) 18:43, 4 April 2025 (UTC)
- Hey @WereSpielChequers, thanks for the questions. First I wanted to explain that I decided to move this conversation from the help talk page because, well, there are two pages, so it's best to make them somewhat different. :D I added a tmbox at the top of the help page to clarify what page is best for what purpose.
- Regarding your questions - we won't be deploying it on English Wikipedia this quarter, that's for sure. Currently, we are preparing temp accounts and everything around them (like thresholds to access to IP addresses) for deployment on some large wikis. As we wrote on Diff, we want to deploy on large wikis other than English WP, then watch a bit, make tweaks etc., and only then deploy on English.
- About feedback - yes, we have run a survey (we asked stewards, global sysops, CheckUsers, and admins of the pilot wikis). Now we're analyzing data and next week, I should be able to share it. At first glance, it looks very promising, overall feedback is positive (beyond my expectations tbh :DD).

- Thanks SGrabarczuk, can I suggest you submit that to the Signpost as an article at en:Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/Newsroom/Suggestions? WereSpielChequers (talk) 22:32, 5 April 2025 (UTC)

FAQ not up-to-date
Hi @SGrabarczuk (WMF): fr:Wikipédia:Le Bistro/2 avril 2025#Comptes temporaires: Comment mettre à jour votre code is linking to Trust_and_Safety_Product/Temporary_Accounts/FAQ#Where_are_temporary_accounts_deployed?_When_will_these_changes_reach_my_wiki? where it says major wiki deployment is for February 2025. We are in April.
