Unable to reply

[edit]

I've started seeing:

The "reply" link cannot be used to reply to this comment. To reply, please use the full page editor by clicking "Edit source".

frequently. For example, on this page, if I click the "reply" link after "See Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Talk:Clique (song)/GA1. -- RoySmith (talk) 9:36 pm, 12 December 2021, last Sunday (2 days ago) (UTC−5)". RoySmith (talk) 14:56, 14 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

This is likely because there is a huge box around the entire page, which makes the sections unbalanced html and the parser cannot accurately enough guess the wikitext position to which to reply in that case. This is a known limitation (and exactly why decorative boxes should not be put around pages). —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talkcontribs) 16:01, 14 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Indeed, see also Help:DiscussionTools/Why can't I reply to this comment?#Accidental complex transclusion. Matma Rex (talk) 22:40, 14 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
I'm getting the same error on the reply link after "Please review my request and I am ready to join a discussion regarding this ..." at the very bottom of https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Haoreima&oldid=1060292141#3rd_unblock_request_after_2nd_procedural_decline RoySmith (talk) 16:30, 14 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
This case is interesting. There are two comments with the same time (16:13, 14 December 2021 (UTC)), where the first of them is generated by the {{Unblock}} template, but the second isn't.
Reply tool can't add replies to comments inside template parameters, so we can't reply to the first one, but we should be able to reply to the second – but we can't. I think something might be going wrong with that check, and it checks the first comment even if you're replying to the second one. Matma Rex (talk) 22:39, 14 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
I reported this as T297850 and submitted a patch. Matma Rex (talk) 00:25, 16 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

When using reply feature, the page's edit notice isn't displayed

[edit]

For example, my talk page on Simple English Wikipedia, or [[:simple:Wikipedia:Vandalism in progress]]. The edit notice for the latter has helpful information about templates that can be used for replying to reports there. When using the reply function, that information isn't shown. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:20, 25 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Editnotices only show when you create a new page with discusion tools. —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talkcontribs) 13:11, 28 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Not only when creating new pages, they also appear when you create a new topic on an existing talk page (e.g. https://simple.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Auntof6&action=edit&section=new&dtenable=1 – I had to add an extra URL parameter as the new discussion tool is not yet enabled by default). As far as I remember, they were intentionally left out for replies as they often contain things that are not relevant when replying (e.g. templates to use when starting new topics – like those that are in the normal page header on simple:Wikipedia:Vandalism in progress; but the editnotices on your talk page are also relevant only when starting new topics) and to keep the interface as lightweight as possible. That said, the editnotice on Wikipedia:Vandalism in progress would indeed be useful when replying, but I’m not sure how to do that without cluttering the interface. (Fortunately I’m not part of the staff working on this tool, so I can just leave the decision for the staff. 😛) Tacsipacsi (talk) 14:46, 28 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Edit notices appear when doing any talk page edit, even if it's not to create the page or create a new topic. At least they do when editing in source mode (if that's the correct term). If the reply feature always uses the Visual Editor, maybe that's where the issue is. --Auntof6 (talk) 22:01, 28 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

problem using reply on a talkpage - "You are not logged in."

I have been using the replyto tool on several wikis, and it works well in most cases. However, in one case when I was trying to respond to someone, a post I worked on for quite a while will not post, showing "You are not logged in." right after the preview of my message. However, the preview itself clearly shows that I am logged in.

Thanks in advance for checking this out and letting me know if others are experiencing the same problem, Ottawahitech (talk) 06:58, 31 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Sorry what you have endured, and wish to recreating the experience myself if possible; to add cases for further study. Could you maybe indicate which project and what article page/Userpage you were trying to post your reply? Was it on any wiki for advanced posters? Do you suggest applying any tags to mimick your case? Cheers, Omotecho (talk) 07:23, 31 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
problem solved - sorry to bother. Ottawahitech (talk) 07:25, 31 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
