About giving feedback

Please read Reading/Web/PDF Functionality and comment on the plans we lay out there, to tell us what you need from the PDF service. We're especially interested in what you need in the future that doesn't exist in the plans laid out there – if there's a bug with something that should work right now (e.g. you get an error message when you try to create a PDF), we need to fix it, of course, but that would have been on the agenda anyway.

PDFs generated from Cherokee-language pages are illegible

You might want to add this open-source font to your renderer: Noto Sans Cherokee. It is complete, well-designed and includes the Cherokee characters added in Unicode 8.0. Renamed user 23o2iqy4ewqoiudh (talk) 04:56, 1 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

The two-column renderer is the deprecated one, and I don’t think that the font it uses includes the Cherokee lowercase. Those can’t be seen in the two-column PDF generated from the page I linked above because it doesn’t support the tables in the page. Request for better handling of old revisions

The "Printable version" for old revisions of a Wikipedia page contain a red info box at the beginning, where the revision date is documented. Additionally the URL including the OLDID is placed at the bottom of the page. This is important, when I have to document the content of a Wikipedia article before / at an individual date.

Both the one and two column versions of "Download as PDF" doesn't contain an info box at the beginning. Please add this there, too.

The one column version ignores the OLDID - the line "Retrieved from ..." at the bottom of the PDF always refers to the OLDID URL of the newest/current version of the article, and not the OLDID-Revision from which I called the "Download as PDF" function (this BUG does NOT happen in the two column version). Please fix this bug, so that I can get an old revision of an article as one column PDF.

Download failed

"Works" section blank in two-column format

Noticed when trying to print out author's article in two column format. Specifically "Margaret Atwood" that the "Works" section is left out yet in the one column format it is left in. It should definitely be left in with both styles. Tirab (talk) 20:02, 2 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Would it be possible to give the option to individuals who wish to maintain the blue hyperlink text in PDF versions? Additionally, is there a way to maintain the blue hypertext even if forgoing the PDF function and printing directly through the server (in other words, if I go to Firefox > print)?

Though a burgundy colored font distinguishes the hypertext in the two column PDF versions, this color is slightly difficult to see, both on-screen and upon printing.

Who removed the print version?

I want to cut and paste documents into Microsoft Word so I can easily remove unnecessary tables of contents, attributions, and so forth in the final printed version. Now when I click on the printable version link it does not give the less formatted version but rather it goers straight to the print dialog box. I expect that much paper and ink is wasted. Who knows what rubbish that will print!??

Not sure what browser you are using, but ALL modern browsers after IE5.5 will apply print styles automatically when going to Print.
Printable version was only needed in order to support IE5.5 and since we stopped supporting that, it no longer has a use. —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talkcontribs) 13:30, 1 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

It was the most STUPID decision ever happened to Wikipedia.
Previously -- as a USER -- I was able to format the printable version in MS Word for my needs and convenience: like underlining some text I needed, changing the font which is better for my eyes, than Times New Roman, or adding my personal notes in different font/color in parenthesis, etc. So it was much more comfortable for me as a USER.
This "modernization" with the option to print to the equally unusable/rigid MS One Note, or the download in the PDF format, which has many limitations itself, besides both Wikipedia's tries, is the change to the MUCH WORSE USABILITY. You would better provide your programmers with other "play-doh", so they wouldn't experiment with a very well working (sorry, WORKED) features!!! Download as PDF

Why are you bringing back the single column format? Wikipedia used to download PDF in this format, it takes up too much pages with pictures and tables.

The 2-column format is much neater. It would be great if you can retain the 2-column format which I absolutely love.

If the user clicks any reference number throughout the article, the page does not scroll to the correct location. This is NOT an issue in the double column layout. Hi there Wikipedia , one thank you for the pages . I'm 64 years old male, with diabetes. The info you provide is good, I save pdf's to hand to others in original form and I modify my notes for my use. People trust you and like seeing your pdf's . I found the single column pdf work well for me and gets away from sometimes confusing two column pdf's.

I have downloaded a Drill String article on a single column without any problems. Teh copy is works very nicely.

I love the ability of the "book" function to make a complete TOC. However, I am no longer making any books, but downloading each page individually, because tables. In the "book" function, even single column files don't include the tables. Also, in the "book" function, single column printing embeds graphics as HUGE images. Double column is easier to read. I like the main text to be “Times New Roman” size 14.

Title can be larger like size 26. I prefer same text style in the whole article. Then it is “Times New Roman”. It can be centralized and underscored too. Subtitle can be smaller like size 18 and printed in left alignment.

Footnotes I like to be elevated and bold/fattened text like 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 etc

If footnotes are difficult to see difference compared to main text. You can use symbols like:



1. It seems to be a problem. Rendering of book with 130 articles fails. But plain text format does well.

2. Need for adjustable font size (at least 10 to 16 pt) when saving PDF.

Why bother with this capability organically?

This capability duplicates the capability that already exists in most browsers. Once the Wiki article is formatted in the 'print friendly version' just let the browser print it and select the 'print to pdf' or 'Microsoft xps' device format. It makes more sense to let external companies maintain this capability than to waste your resources duplicating it and subsequently having to maintain it. The capability to produce a pdf may have been unique enough 15 years ago that it had to be separately provided but not now. When I tried that just now, I could adjust the margins but not the headers and footers nor where they print.
I cannot use "Create a book" for anything as long as it does not retain tables and infoboxes.
Similarly, I do not find "Download as PDF" useable in its current form as long as it does not include headers and footers at least with page numbers and preferably also date and source.
The "Printable version" is marginally acceptable, because it retains tables and infoboxes. It's only "marginally acceptable" for my purposes, because the margins are too narrow for many purposes, and the placement of headers and footers do not change when the margins are changed. Try adjusting the margins to 5 cm or 2 inches on all four sides to see what I mean.
I think Wikmedia projects should have a first class PDF maker that allows users to adjust margins and content and placement of headers and footers.

Because the generic save-to-pdf capability of browsers and operating systems often results in a substandard output when applied to pages with nontrivial layouts such as wikipedia pages with tables, displayed equations, etc. You may also get different results on different computers because of local settings variations. Also the generic systems sometimes have subtle fatal glitches: For years the Google Chrome save-to-pdf function was, on some systems, producing pdfs that contained no searchable text because of how they dealt with the font specification. It took years of reporting that bug before it was fixed properly. You could view such a pdf and think nothing was wrong, but it would never show up on a search for files on your computer containing the text it appeared to contain. PDF functionality doesn't show equations properly

I downloaded a "Least squares" topic, the style looks nice and most of the equations are shown, but most of the equations arent shown, I just see the LaTeX code to the equation and the icon of a broken image. Extremely long time to print long articles in single column format

Frequently it takes up to 5 minutes to get the pdf output of a longish article in single column whereas double works just as fast it always has.
I like the single column format better so I'd suggest looking for some bug or something that leads to long processing times. If that is a feature of the software producing single column it probably won't be acceptable as a permanent solution. 68.98.170.156 (talk) 01:34, 17 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

I can only agree...have the same problem recently, so I re-load and re-load until one re-loaded page suddenly prints instantly. I am not a techno-savvy too much but what I sense is any kind of bug in your one-column download software. Otherwise, I strongly prefer the one-column style, once for an uninterrupted reading flow, twice for the many info boxes which are an essential part of the whole article's information value. I mostly download single articles and sort them into my individual folders. -
Hope you might deal with the printer's glitches at the soonest. Cheers !
And just while sending my comment, I read the RED BOX commenting that my (collective) IP had been blocked ! So this might be one reason for the nearly non-working downloads...?

Desired Features

I have noticed that many graphs are useful for the topic I am trying to teach, while others are less important for an individual plan. It would be nice if we could select which embedded graphs/tables we wanted to keep, minimizing paper waste in the event we wish to print the PDF afterwards. Agreed ! I could certainly use formatting that allows me to put wikipedia tables straight into Excel, so I can restructure the contents to make it useful. rendering failed

i am trying to finish my book creating for my exam open book ref. and i am trying since yesterday and this is really ridiculous , it doesn't work and it always reaches til 87% and then stops, giving this message which i really don't understand

Unable to download single column

I am unable to download the single column format but the double column is working just fine. I tried it on 4 different documents and had no problems with the Double Column format. When attempting to use the single column, it does nothing at all. Hope this helps.

Long Delays Generating Single Column (still - again)

I still quite often get multi-minute delays in single column pdf generation.

The double column comes back in a few seconds so, basically, at least for me, the single column is currently unworkable.

Digital Bookmarks Option for PDF

Former PDF generation of Wikipedia enriched the PDF files with bookmark functionality.

I guess, only few people recognised and honoured this, because they where hidden by default file view properties.

I would like to have digital bookmarks again, becoming visible by using Adobe Reader's command View > Navigation > Bookmarks or File Properties > View Opening Options or so. (Unfortunately I'm using a German version and have to assume English command names).

File Meta Data

In former PDF file generation, the file property meta data was created, e. g. title and author of the document. This was very helpful for desktop indexing and search and finding files, generated by Wikipedia, with web search engines.

What is the tool chain used? Both the DocBook and DITA can support conversion on the fly to epub, ODT, DJVU, CHM, and other similar formats.
Wikipedia must have an option for epub. It opens up WP to a bunch of attached book readers, and is the only way I can read longer articles on my phone. It also makes import into calligra more accurate, since PDF botches line endings. 75.73.1.89 (talk) 15:03, 10 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Arabic Font/Typeface

The Arabic typeface used in single-column layout is messy and cartoonish in my opinion. The font used in the two-column layout is much more clear and elegant and professional. Please give us the ability to choose this font. Also, the text alignment is not set as JUSTIFY and it makes pages look generally more difficult to read.

Verify the PDF generator by automated tests of PDF documents

As the author of the testing tool "PDFUnit" I offer a free license to the Wikipedia/Wikimedia project to support testing of generated PDF documents.

A very short description: PDFUnit is a Java-API. It can process PDF as files, URL's or byte streams. Parsing left-to-right text is supported. Regions of a page can be declared to be processed or to be ignored. Whitespace can be normalized. Text in columns can be validated. In combination with Selenium it's possible to verify the process behind the web site that creates the PDF. (I have done that.)

From January 2018 on I can support the Wikimedia project by writing tests, but currently I'm fulltime engaged in a project.

Can I ask that you keep it open for now? On en.wikipedia, downloading a single page as a PDF now includes tables, fine. But building a PDF book using Book Creator still does not pull in the tables.
Yet, the full problem stated when opening this issue was, "Problem: When downloading an article as pdf or as a book in pdf form, tables of any kind seem to be omitted."
T142202 "Only render single articles, and not collections or books" clearly turns its back on a full solution to the stated problem.
Wikipedia once had reasonably good table rendering in books. If we can do it in a standalone page, why not for that same page when it is in a book? There is unfinished business here that I would like to see resolved before this ticket gets closed.
