Please, add "deceased" to display for Users that have died.

[edit]

This former volunteer, for example. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Patrick_Rogel This would be informative. Thanks, -- Ooligan (talk) 20:55, 6 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Ooligan hello! Thanks for this request. I don't know how this data is tracked and whether we will be able to fulfill this request. I will file a task and ask our team to look at it. -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 11:38, 8 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, @NKohli (WMF). Fyi,
The "info card" for Patrick Rogel (deceased volunteer) today shows "globally locked since ....". The link on that line goes to the global lock page, which does not inform the reader that Patrick is deceased. You must click another link here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:CentralAuth/Patrick_Rogel to see text stating the reason for this "global lock" is because of Patrick's death.
  • Can the "globally locked" line on the info card be converted into the word "Deceased" or the phrase "Deceased Wikimedian/ Wikpedian/ Volunteer", (where the lock is because of a volunteer's confirmed death)? Thank you, --

Hello @NKohli (WMF), Could you please provide an update on this suggestion. Thanks, -- Ooligan (talk) 01:48, 15 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hello @NKohli (WMF),
A year ago you replied to me,
Please, share the "task" link and number that you filed. Thank you,

Please, add "renamed" to display the all User names of the User being displayed.

[edit]

There are "renamed Users" with past blocks under their previous name(s). This would be helpful and informative. Thanks, -- Ooligan (talk) 21:12, 6 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Ooligan Thanks! We will look into this. -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 11:44, 8 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi @NKohli (WMF), Please provide an update on my suggestion. Did you file a "task" about this idea? Thanks again, -- Ooligan (talk) 21:24, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Niharika left the Foundation in June. I'm sorry we didn't notice your ping earlier :/ I've asked the team if they know what the status is. SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 20:11, 16 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

I just saw this feature today and thought to myself, "did Twinkle update its interface?" But imagine my (pleasant) surprise when I found out what it can do! I think this is a very useful feature since it provides a succinct summary of a user's statistics and information. I do wonder how many people thought it was a Twinkle update... Icepinner (talk) 13:47, 4 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Icepinner: Do the user info cards work for you when using Twinkle to revert edits? For me, they don't; see here. --Paloi Sciurala (talk|contribs) 16:55, 4 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Should this user icon have a circle and slash, because of block?

[edit]

Or why not? Just curious. - https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Designer_Worships_You!&action=edit&redlink=1 Ooligan (talk) 15:31, 13 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hey @Ooligan, yes, blocked users have a different icon - with a circle and slash. The user you've linked to isn't currently blocked (only their user page has been deleted) that's why they have the regular icon. SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 19:02, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
@SGrabarczuk (WMF) - Please, see:
and on the "block log" the icon does show a circle with a slash on the block page only here:
Shouldn't the icon with circle and slash be on all projects or just Wikipedia, where there is a block? Thanks, -- Ooligan (talk) 20:37, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Here is the Commons link of the icon without circle and slash.
This account is only blocked on English Wikipedia, they aren't on any other wiki, and the icon is consistent with that. They would have the blocked icon if they were blocked globally. SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 21:26, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for looking into this @SGrabarczuk (WMF). Best regards, -- Ooligan (talk) 21:45, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

modified locally for certain projects?

[edit]

Hello,

This is not yet a request, but rather a technical question.

Would it be possible to have the icon modified locally for certain projects? For example, a non-denominational memorial stele for deceased Wikimedians (currently, the icon is a block symbol), or perhaps a dollar sign for Wikimedians who have declared that they make paid contributions?

Could this be linked to a template or a title icon on user pages?

Kind regards, --Madelgarius (talk) 14:56, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hey @Madelgarius, I'm glad that you are so enthusiastic about the feature! :D I'm gonna give a broader answer and ask somebody from engineering to confirm the technical part.
User Info is designed to help users who patrol activity against abuse to make decisions typical for their workflows (blocking, investigating, adding/removing permissions, etc.). The icon has been and may in the future be modified to give relevant information, such as "the user has been blocked", or "the user is present in a Suggested Investigations case" (T436907).
We are unlikely to ever consider cases unrelated to abuse, like the two you've mentioned. Because of this, we will probably not make it technically possible for community members to modify the icon. SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 18:55, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hello @SGrabarczuk (WMF),
You wrote, "We are unlikely to ever consider cases unrelated to abuse, like the two you've mentioned." (underline added)
Madelgarius wrote, "for deceased Wikimedians (currently, the icon is a block symbol)" These deceased User "cases" are completely "unrelated to abuse" and should be "considered" and discussed as a priority by the Trust and Safety Product Team.
I repeat his point, that this "User Info" icon with the circle and slash is currently displaying for Editors/ Users as you wrote, only because they have blocked for being dead, not blocked for any abuse. Because the currently misleading block icon, related to deceased Users, the Trust and Safety Product Team need to "consider cases unrelated to abuse."
Obviously, the systemic inability to have different icons (and/ or an informational notation) to represent a deceased User block as different from a behavioral/ abuse User block could be considered as disrespectful to the memory and legacy of good faith contributors and thier living friends and acquaintances on these many worldwide projects.
Additionally, I don't read that @Madelgarius wanted, as you wrote, "... for community members to modify the icon." Instead, I read it to allow, "to have the icon modified locally for certain projects?" - meaning systematically, when a Editors/ Users are confirmed as "deceased" or "paid contributors."
Thank you, -- Ooligan (talk) 00:14, 16 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hey @Ooligan, thanks for this comment. I get what you are talking about. This is emotionally heavy indeed.
We are glad that you, and many others, think that the User Info card is powerful and may be used for different purposes.
However, UIC is not shown to all users and is not meant to be like a public social scoring board or a commemoration space. We work on it to make it easier for admins to decide whom to block, for CUs whom to investigate, etc. Our goal is an increased efficiency of users with extended rights. If somebody has been blocked, then this is a data point that we surface to them. Our role ends here. See the details of our work on the tool.
On a side note, I've noticed that you linked to the Trust and Safety team at the Legal department. We are Product Safety and Integrity (PSI) at the Product and Technology (P&T) department. We were never one team with T&S; we weren't even in the same department. PSI is a merger of the former P&T teams: Trust and Safety Product (TSP) and Security. This is our annual plan, and all our priorities are outlined there. I hope this will help you put UIC in the context of our work.
Is our position clearer now? Does my answer help? SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 22:22, 16 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
