Is there an extension that automatically signs edits on talk and discussion pages? Preferably one that applies to IPs and new accounts. Alumnum (talk) 23:55, 31 January 2019 (UTC)

- Hello. I'm asking for a extension that automatically signs edits made by unregistered or new users on wikis. Is there one? Alumnum (talk) 22:38, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
- I don't think such an extension exists. Pretty sure on English Wikipedia unsigned comments are signed by a bot. Garuda3 (talk) 15:54, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
- How do I implant such a bot on a wiki I administer? Alumnum (talk) 01:13, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

I have the exercice to update the wiki in oure company. No big problem to deal with right?
Sure not but mediawiki thinks diffrent. If you update it it compleatly breaks. After 2 weeks it is running again like before but there are still a few thinks missing.
The whole help Page from Mediawiki helped me with nothing. I never had that much trubbel by installing or update an web software like this.
The source code is ok but not so good that it is very difficult to run into an error! 212.144.247.90 (talk) 07:57, 27 February 2019 (UTC)
- If you have specific issues (and are interested in a constructive and respectful dialog), feel free to ask for help on https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Project:Support_desk. https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:MediaWiki clearly says "This page is only for discussion of MediaWiki.org's main page." Maybe upgrade the design a bit? For a start, replace the images and icons, and also change the download button. Iniquity (talk) 19:33, 14 March 2019 (UTC)

- I now understand you even less, I think.
- You've linked to the design style guide, for which OOUI is the reference implementation.
- (And none of this is so broadly applicable that it should be on the talk page of the main page of this wiki – maybe Talk:Design would be more focussed and get attention from the right people?) Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 22:58, 14 March 2019 (UTC)
- Are you sure that in order to change the design of the main page I need to go there? Iniquity (talk) 23:39, 14 March 2019 (UTC)
- Oh. You're talking about changing the design of the MediaWiki.org front page to align the in-content copy/layout with the style guide for the MediaWiki chrome? Now I understand. Will re-title the thread so other people aren't confused. Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 00:28, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, I'm talking about this. I'm sorry for the confusion :) Iniquity (talk) 00:31, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
- What exactly to "replace the images and icons" with? Could you point to a relevant section in the style guide, please? AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 00:46, 16 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Iniquity I looked at the icons and I don't see any icon related to "administration" or "developers" or such. Note that these icons have a meaning. For examples, the icon that displays a cog (which stands for preferences) should not be used in a context that does not mean preferences. I'm all in for better icons. Please propose specific ones if you are aware of specific ones. AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 16:52, 16 March 2019 (UTC)

- All three icons have three different styles now. These icons fall under this section. Yes, I see that some images are difficult to replace. Maybe redraw them? Or we can use photos from the hackathon instead of icons. But as an option, these icons are less suitable in style or The Noun Project. Iniquity (talk) 17:34, 16 March 2019 (UTC)

- In that example, I only talked about block design. Iniquity (talk) 20:26, 16 March 2019 (UTC)

Mediawiki display all Matching Categories in list

I am using DynamicPageList witho much success.
However now I have a need to list all categories as links grouped together.
Take the following categories with the code:
40k
warhammer
space marines
eldar
`
<DynamicPageList>
category = 40k
category = space marine
category = eldar
mode = unordered
order=descending
namespace=category
</DynamicPageList>
From the 4 categories, only space marines
and eldar
contain the 40k
category.
So I would like the following list to be output from the code above:

Box order

I like the different "Box per audience". I would like to suggest a very small change, based on page views.
Download seems to be the most popular page: https://tools.wmflabs.org/topviews/?project=mediawiki.org&platform=all-access&date=last-month&excludes= (probably not the most useful link for the community that stays around, but I can certainly see a lot of people hitting download and never coming back).
I would like to suggest, for the languages that are left-to-right, to position the "Set up and run MediaWiki" on the left (and the opposite place on the right-to-left languages), so people can find it easier. Compare to sites such as https://www.drupal.org/ or https://wordpress.org/ where they have a distinctive "Get" button. I don't think a button is necessary, but putting it on the most noticeable place may help.
People that want to participate on the community, even if this wiki is mostly for them, they will stay for longer. But I think this is a classical case of a "Z" scanning pattern, where the Logo, then the photo, then the left box catches your attention first. Another option is to give the Download link more contrast, so it is at the end of the Z.
Just an opinion. JCrespo (WMF) (talk) 07:37, 15 April 2019 (UTC)
- @JCrespo (WMF) Like this ? Tomybrz Bip Bip 08:24, 18 April 2019 (UTC)
- What do you think @AKlapper (WMF) ? :) Tomybrz Bip Bip 15:24, 18 April 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, either that or keeping it like now and adding a button Button/Bold/anything else for a stronger "call to action", both would be ok for me, but I would suggest to wait for feedback from others. JCrespo (WMF) (talk) 20:28, 18 April 2019 (UTC)
- Probably makes sense given the access statistics (though I always wonder how much lamp post fallacy [1] we fall into comparing the pageviews to other pages if people did not succeed finding those other pages that they wanted to find). Please feel free to go ahead. :) AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 20:37, 22 April 2019 (UTC)
- Well i don't want to break the main page, if someone can make the edit. Thanks Tomybrz Bip Bip 19:50, 27 April 2019 (UTC)

Latest Stable Builds Conveniently on the Main Page
[edit]- Is there a good convincing reason as to why the latest stable builds are no longer listed on mediawiki wiki's main page? Lyrixn (talk) 05:48, 27 April 2019 (UTC)
- Why is it important to you to see the specific numbers of the latest stable builds on the main page? AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 19:46, 27 April 2019 (UTC)
- It was both convenient to download and track the latest stable and LTS builds. By the way I'm talking about this box: https://i.imgur.com/7WNmVzY.png that was still there not long ago (a few months ago at most). Lyrixn (talk) 05:47, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
- If you want to download and track latest builds, feel free to bookmark Download.
- I see no reason for such information to waste space on the front page. See "If people want to download MediaWiki they should go to the Download page" on MediaWiki/Homepage improvements 2018. AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 07:50, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
- Who decides what wastes space on the main page and what doesn't? Was there a discussion where the majority agreed that the box that's been there for years is no longer relevant? All I see on the project you linked that it was decided (probably by you) that the box should be removed and that's that. The discussion page on that same project has little to no reference or actual discussion on this topic.
- I quote from the source you linked: "I doubt anyone informs themselves about a need for an upgrade of their installation by visiting the front page and then manually comparing with their version."
- "I doubt" - you doubt so that automatically means that no one does that. Well I did exactly that and I'm more than confident that there were a lot of people who did exactly that as well, but obviously they aren't being so vocal about it. For most of the people this wiki is a resource for the software. Lyrixn (talk) 08:37, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Lyrixn: Sure there was. See the three "Announcements / call for comments" sections on MediaWiki/Homepage improvements 2018 how you could have gotten aware. AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 09:00, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
- I do see you being the only participant in these, unless I'm missing something. Lyrixn (talk) 09:17, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
- If that was true (it is not), what would be the problem with that? Nobody can force anyone to take part in discussions...
- The discussions can be found in Talk:MediaWiki/Homepage improvements 2018 and Talk:MediaWiki/Homepage improvements 2018/Proposal as linked from the three "call for comments" sections that I already linked in my previous comment. Anyone interested was welcome to provide input. AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 09:19, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
- I'm not sure I totally understand but if I do, then you're asking for what is in the "News" card in https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki? I do see latest stable builds/releases of MW on the "News" card, which if you click on "more news", you'll be taken to: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/News.
- Does that help? Thanks! X-Savitar (talk) 06:21, 27 April 2019 (UTC)

Do not get me wrong, but the new image has issues. It is too dark, the people merge somehow with the background making it appear like an undifferentiated mass. Probably the top section needs to be cropped away and more brightness or so may help too. [[kgh]] (talk) 15:01, 24 May 2019 (UTC)
- I took a shot at making it a bit better: File:Wikimedia Hackathon Prague 2019 - 2019-05-18 - Group Picture - cropped.jpg. I cropped it down to the group of people and ran it through a filter to normalize the brightness. BDavis (WMF) (talk) 00:57, 27 May 2019 (UTC)
- Great, I personally believe this is much much better than the original version. Thanks a lot for working on this! [[kgh]] (talk) 06:11, 27 May 2019 (UTC)
- I suggest maybe using the other photo, the one where people aren't holding their hands in the air and thus obscuring many people's faces behind them. If easy, could you do the same brightening magic to File:Wikimedia_Hackathon_Prague_2019_-_Group_Photo_-_CLK.png? Thank you! Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 16:38, 27 May 2019 (UTC)

Now that the header cannot longer be translated, I used this to make the main page in German somewhat sane (also applies to all other languages), the header needs to be hidden via CSS. Currently the header e.g. says "Template:Main page/de" and I believe we cannot be serious about this. [[kgh]] (talk) 19:59, 31 May 2019 (UTC)

If we have a good big download button on the home page to download mediawiki then that will be better. The link is OK. But If we can have a button then it is great. Ranjithsiji (talk) 02:01, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Ranjithsiji: No I disagree. Most people do not come for "downloading". No problem is solved if you click a big download button and then cannot find what to do with that downloaded file. AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 07:51, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
- @AKlapper (WMF) I think the primary subject of this website is mediawiki. That is why I suggested this. I completely agree with you that most people may not here for downloading. But I think that the main subject of this website is to popularize or solve problems related to mediawiki. So in the first point download must be notable. One more the download button must not start the download instantly instead redirect it to the download and install instructions page. Ranjithsiji (talk) 13:54, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

Somebody added the "Other languages" section to show also at the top of translated pages. Now it shows at the top and the bottom. I was wondering if in the wikipedia pages related to chemistry, talking about orbitals, molecules and c ... we could add the 3D model of the subject of the page. I refer to integrating the jmol file / script into wikipedia pages to freely display a molecule, an orbital and so on in 3 dimensions. I think that such an addition could contribute positively in some cases to the encyclopedia. -⁓⁓⁓⁓ Griot Matteo (talk) 19:12, 16 November 2019 (UTC)

- hello, thank you for your reply.
- from what I could read the project was no longer carried out, I hoped that Wikipedia had managed to implement it and make it available for all its pages ... Griot Matteo (talk) 11:07, 17 November 2019 (UTC)

sorry, for practicality I created a new topic.
as the title suggests, much clearer than before, I would be interested in understanding how and where to request activation of the Jmol extension, existing on mediawiki, for wikipedia pages. Griot Matteo (talk) 21:19, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
- (For context: Talk:MediaWiki/2019#h-personal_curiosity_for_jmol-2019-11-16T19:12:00.000Z). See the open dependency tasks to fix in https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T45616 and/or previous discussion in https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T18491. See How to become a MediaWiki hacker if you would like to work on code. See Bug management/Development prioritization for general information. AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 21:37, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
- once again, I'm sorry, unfortunately I'm new to the whole platform with regards to these things.
- If I didn't understand it I would have to ask in the already opened tasks to see if you can already integrate the 3D visualization of jmol in the wikipedia pages, right?
- I ask only because when I looked at mediawiki I found that the Jmol extension already exists (Extension:Jmol).
- Sorry for all these questions but you are the only one available to explain things for a moment and give me useful links. Griot Matteo (talk) 08:53, 19 November 2019 (UTC)
- There is no need to ask in opened tasks, as they are "open" (and not "resolved") for a reason: They are not resolved so you cannot already integrate the 3D visualization of jmol in Wikipedia pages. :)
- I was not aware of https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Jmol , thanks for sharing that! See https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Review_queue for the steps required if you would like to see that Jmol extension available on Wikimedia websites such as Wikipedia. AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 11:14, 19 November 2019 (UTC)
- I readen the page Review queue but I didn't found in any part of this how I can ask for see that Jmol extension avaiable on Wikipedia.
- If I'm not mistaken, only the creator has the right to make those steps for the request.
- what should I do then?
- Thanks in advance Griot Matteo (talk) 14:01, 19 November 2019 (UTC)
- You could contacts the authors / maintainers of that extension. AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 15:50, 19 November 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you so much! Griot Matteo (talk) 16:07, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

Wording and style suggestions for frontpage

I have some suggestions of minor changes to the frontpage:
Mine are not that great, and very open to discussion, but I think it improves a bit the searching of information (what I think is important can be certainly argued against, and I may be showing my biases, despite trying to think on "new users first"). As a problem I had, I tried to look for "how to start coding?" link and was unable to find it, despite knowing it was here.

- @JCrespo (WMF): Thanks! I can offer my feedback but note that I don't see myself as some gatekeeper or maintainer here.
- I agree with nearly all changes, except for the last one where I'm not sure if "How to start contributing to Wikimedia" is more guiding: My main intention might not be to "contribute" something, but to get hands on some code and find a project for that. ("Contribute" always felt vague to me as it can mean so many things - contribute food? thoughts? money? code?) AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 16:22, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
- (Oh wait, I realize that maybe editing that page requires some special permissions maybe?) AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 23:12, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
- > requires some special permissions maybe
- Indeed it does, I cannot edit it directly.
- > Choose a software project to hack on
- That is confusing to me. I agree my suggestion is not ok either. I would be happy to have a better 3 option. Something in the vein of "Start coding <something>" or something that doesn't include "hack" (no problem for me with it, but I think its confusing for newcomers) and that is not "choose", something more explicit in a couple of words. JCrespo (WMF) (talk) 14:11, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
- @JCrespo (WMF) "Start working on the code of a project", maybe? (I don't dare currently to make the other edits because as usual, I don't understand all that <translate> markup, sigh.) AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 16:20, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
- "Start coding for a Wikimedia project"? (shorter) JCrespo (WMF) (talk) 16:49, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
- I've added the bolding and the link-label change.
- However changing the 3 "Learn ..." links is much more complicated, because currently the existing translations are embedded within link-syntax, hence if we did something like this, then the previously translated text would end up without any links until a translator noticed the problem (in each language). [IIUC]. -- It's especially problematic here because the system doesn't seem to be rendering the pink-background color for outdated sections, as it's meant to. - Thanks for your help, Quiddity! (And JCrespo for the improvements!) AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 22:04, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks, I am happy as it is now! Thanks both! JCrespo (WMF) (talk) 10:11, 4 December 2019 (UTC)
