Syncing "News" block with our social media?
[edit]I edited the Subject of this thread because the original proposal has changed--Qgil
The "New opportunities" block is between empty and outdated. Maintaining it properly takes time and dedication. In the meantime we have sorted out our social media channels, and there are updates almost every day. So I was wondering... could we make a change, and get the feed of the @MediaWiki identi.ca timeline automatically syndicated?
The block could be called "Community" or "Social media" and the four services currently supported and this page could be linked from there.
One thing is whether you like the idea and another point is how this should be implemented. Please discuss. Qgil (talk) 00:03, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
- The New opportunities block has been updated and looks good. Thank you!
- This proposal makes still sense for the News block. It is only listing releases, when the last ones are alredy listed in their own block. What do you think?
- If the automated RSS thing is a problem then I could start updating those news manually and see how does it look like, but before doing that I'd welcome more opinions. Qgil (talk) 18:56, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
- Done. I'm not fully convinced about this format giving so much relevance to the date but I wasn't able to come up with better alternatives. It's good enough for now. Qgil (talk) 06:05, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
- To give you an idea, the news we would have published since Jan 1 could have been:
- 2013-01-10: Wikimedia engineering December 2012 report
- 2013-01-09: MediaWiki 1.21 is under development. Watch its wiki page and follow the thread at wikitech-l.

- 2013-01-03: Meet the Echo development team on Jan 8 and learn about the upcoming notifications framework for MediaWiki
- 2013-01-03: MediaWiki Workshop in Kolkata this Saturday at MozTI@BESU
- 2013-01-01: Wikimedia’s Bug Management Qgil (talk) 19:52, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
- Tomorrow I will update Template:MediaWiki News and therefore the mediawiki.org homepage with the list of news above - unless someone stops me with a good reason. Qgil (talk) 17:40, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
- More frequent manual updates are a great idea, but there are some considerations to be thought through if you decide to automate this.
- Primarily, you'll need to consider i18n. Presumably the news feed is available only in English? If so, will we still be able to offer translated versions of the feed and how do you think that could be managed? Some languages are actively translating the news feed (Template:MediaWiki News/fr for example) so thought should be given to how this would work if the feed was automated. Also, and regardless of whether it is manual or automatic, we need to consider what impact a large increase in frequency will have on the translating process. If the translations can't keep up and things are too often out-of-sync, it may be better for non-English pages to have a current feed in English than an out-of-date feed in the correct language, but this is something that should be discussed with the users of those other languages. I would recommend contacting any active translators to gauge their opinion beforehand.
- Also, consideration should be given to what happens to the old content of that template (which shouldn't simply be lost, imho), and in particular the impact it will have on News which also transcludes it (as well as other, less prominent transclusions, such as Developer hub/ru). If you're updating it manually, you should be moving old news into the 'Older news' section once you no-longer want it on the home-page, but how will it work if this is a live feed?
- Just some things to consider before diving in - I am all for improving the timeliness and variety of our news feed! HappyDog (talk) 23:52, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
- Ah, good points. We can forget about the implications of automation for now since I have no idea how this would work, and nobody else is interested so far. Not a big deal, as it takes me an extra minute to include the News template in the round.
- As for translations... I guess translators can just decide? They might even start thinking about adding news relevant in their own languages.
- I'm for starting in English and see how translators react. The worst that could happen is that they keep translating only when a new MediaWiki release comes = no loss. I have left a notice at the template's discussion page that I guess translators are watching. Qgil (talk) 00:19, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
- Sounds reasonable. HappyDog (talk) 00:49, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you for clarifying the homepage. The setup is far better than it was before. More frequent updates would be appreciated, since many of the pages are difficult to find, assuming one even knows they exist. Frug (talk) 16:23, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

Links to our social media handlers in News block
[edit]We are maintaining MediaWiki handlers for identi.ca, Twitter, Facebook and Google+ (see details). We can assume that a big % of users visiting this homepage have an account in any of these services and probabl some would consider following us there. It would make sense to have links to these handlers at the News block, now that it's providing basically the same updates.
One option could be to replace the (i) icon at the top right of the News block for 4 icons of the same size linking to the MediaWiki handler in each service. Qgil (talk) 18:10, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi. I'm going to try downgrading the protection level of the main page (MediaWiki). It's been set to [edit=sysop:move=sysop] [cascading] since January 2007. This sucks for a few reasons:
- it's anti-wiki;
- cascading protection gets in the way of updating sub-templates; and
- it's still sufficiently difficult to obtain autoconfirmed and figure out how to edit that the software restrictions arguably add little actual protection.
So we're gonna try it out for a bit and see what happens. If there's a lot of vandalism, we can always re-protect or investigate other options like FlaggedRevs. MZMcBride (talk) 00:54, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
- +1
- If the experiment goes well a next candidate could be Template:MediaWiki News. Qgil (talk) 14:23, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
- +1 as well. I had already proposed something similar in Thread:Project:Current issues/Replace full protection with FlaggedRevs, but it seems the lack of FlaggedRevs in the Main and Project namespaces prevent a more permissive approach. Is there a reason for that configuration?
- In any case, since the main page is semi-protected and could potentially be vandalized, I don't see a reason for Template:Main page not to be as well. Ideally, FlaggedRevs could allow an extra level of scrutiny, not so much with vandalism prevention in mind, but to provide a system for changes in the landing page not to go public without peer review. Waldir (talk) 16:01, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, we've been getting more test/spam edits to it recently, and I'm considering reinstating the full protection. Jasper Deng (talk) 18:01, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
- That's kind of why we protected it in the first place. HappyDog (talk) 18:12, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
- Let's try Special:AbuseFilter/23 for a bit. MZMcBride (talk) 18:15, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
- But if the main page is semiprotected, why is template:Main page (i.e. the actual content of the main page) fully-protected? Ypnypn (talk) 00:44, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
- Exactly. This seems a bit of a dichotomy, especially since (afaik) FlaggedRevs can be applied to the template namespace. Waldir (talk) 09:54, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
- Hi. I've made you both local administrators here so that you can take a look at the protection and FlaggedRevs settings and make this better, as necessary and appropriate. :-) MZMcBride (talk) 14:45, 7 May 2013 (UTC)
- Woah, thanks! But visiting [1] gives me the following error:
- The page "Template:Main page" cannot be reviewed. No configuration is possible.
- I guess this message should be more informative, because I can't figure out whether this is because I lack the proper rights, or because the template namespace is not set up to use flagged revisions, or some other reason... Waldir (talk) 23:49, 9 May 2013 (UTC)
- I'm not sure how you got there. I get the same error, so I doubt it's permissions-related. MZMcBride (talk) 02:03, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
- I pieced the link together from a page that already had FlaggedRevs configured, and the documentation at Help:Extension:FlaggedRevs. Waldir (talk) 02:19, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
- This wiki isn't setup to use flaggedrevs in that fashion, unlike enwiki. Jasper Deng (talk) 06:13, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
- Are these configuration settings visible somewhere? Waldir (talk) 20:35, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
- This or a related file. Jasper Deng (talk) 03:28, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the pointer. According to that, it seems this is the relevant file. I'll take a look at it later. Waldir (talk) 05:31, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
- Update: Indeed, it seems only the Help, Manual and Extension namespaces are set up to use FlaggedRevs in mw.org:
elseif ( $wgDBname == 'mediawikiwiki' ) { // Set up 2009-08-07 BV w/ config rec from ^demon $wgFlaggedRevsNamespaces = array( NS_HELP, 100 /* NS_MANUAL */, 102 /* Extension */, ); ... }
- Does anyone know why other namespaces aren't included? Waldir (talk) 06:42, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
- Furthermore, to apply different levels of FlaggedRevs as a different protection level, sysops would need the stablesettings right. Jasper Deng (talk) 07:02, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
- Huh, interesting. That right wasn't documented at Extension:FlaggedRevs#User rights and user groups. I've just added them there; could you add some short descriptions? Waldir (talk) 08:49, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
- Waldir, haven't we discussed this already? :p FlaggedRevs is not applied to main namespace pages because the main namespace is not usually content which requires to be verified on this wiki; it's mostly discussions, reports, ideas etc. but not docs.
- If we really need it, the easiest would be adding the Project: namespace to FR and moving the main page to that ns. Nemo 09:45, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
- If you mean here, you did indeed say "there's no FlaggedRevs in main and Project namespace, so not much" (not sure what the "not so much" part meant, btw), so first, I assumed the namespaces you didn't mention did have FlaggedRevs, which is not the case (I don't know why you excluded templates from the survey of fully protected pages you presented there; after all, I didn't mention any particular namespaces in the original message of that thread), and second, that didn't explain why FlaggedRevs wasn't set for those namespaces. Thanks for clarifying that now.
- I don't think it's a matter of "really needing" something; I presented my rationale for using FlaggedDevs instead of full protection in that thread, in a generic way: so the wiki would be more open to improvements by common editors, while still making sure that no actual damage is publicly visible in case there's vandalism. I still think that's a worthy goal, so my question is: is there any reason to not setup FR so it can be applied to pages in any namespace and then change all currently fully protected pages (except perhaps in the User namespace) to semi-protected? What disadvantages could that bring? Waldir (talk) 21:08, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
- "So not much" meant that there wasn't much to do; sorry for not being clear.
- Yes, FlaggedRevs would be IMHO a very bad idea for main namespace and shouldn't be extended just for the sake of one page; it would require wider discussion and consideration of what FlaggedRevs is for on this wiki (Special:ValidationStatistics and Special:UnreviewedPages are not impressing). Nemo 05:39, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
- Hm. I was under the impression that one could enable FlaggedRevs on a namespace, but that wouldn't necessarily apply it to all pages on that namespace. Am I wrong? Otherwise, I don't see the problem with allowing main namespace, as long as only currently protected pages actually end up set up to use it. Everything else would remain the same. Waldir (talk) 15:59, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
- I'm honestly not sure of how exactly the settings work for the extension, but enwiki does use a system that allows flagged revisions to be enabled for only certain pages, off by default. Jasper Deng (talk) 02:42, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
- For reference, Extension:FlaggedRevs has been disabled on MW.org with gerrit:134935 (announcement). Waldir (talk) 03:18, 14 October 2014 (UTC)

SemanticForms: Exclude special characters in #forminput
[edit]Hey,
I've got a question concerning #forminput and would be pleased, if you could help me:
I want to exclude special characters like "@" or "ä" from new form pages. Currently, I'm using #forminput (two-step-process) to enter a page name and create or edit the page. So, I avoid that an existing page will be overwrote. From the input form field ({{{field...) I know that it is possible to define regular expressions inside them. This works fine. Is it possible to use regular expressions in combination with #forminput as well? Or can you recommend other solutions to exclude special characters inside #forminput?
Thank you very much in advanc!.

Mediawiki WYSIWYG Skin IE9 problem
[edit]hey,
ive got a little Problem :D.
Quick Infos:
Mediawiki 1.17
WYSIWYG Extension
Everything works great with FF and IE10 - but there are many users with IE9.
1. We use Monobook as skin. When i try to open the editor the following happens:
http://s7.directupload.net/images/131212/idkg5no4.jpg
(which means "not enough storage") And the editor doesnt appear
2. I googled and found some links:
He says thats cause IE can only do 31 times "createStyleSheet" and offers a workaround.
3. If i change the line in document.js in WYSIWYG\ckeditor\_source\core\dom
from
appendStyleSheet : function( cssFileUrl )
{
if ( this.$.createStyleSheet )
this.$.createStyleSheet( cssFileUrl );
else
{
var link = new CKEDITOR.dom.element( 'link' );
link.setAttributes(
{
rel :'stylesheet',
type : 'text/css',
href : cssFileUrl
});
this.getHead().append( link );
}
to
appendStyleSheet : function( cssFileUrl )
{
if ( false )
this.$.createStyleSheet( cssFileUrl );
else
{
var link = new CKEDITOR.dom.element( 'link' );
link.setAttributes(
{
rel :'stylesheet',
type : 'text/css',
href : cssFileUrl
});
this.getHead().append( link );
}
it looks like this:
http://s7.directupload.net/images/131212/b2hn5a97.jpg
Doesnt work too :D. But i have no idea what the else-block exactly do and about the whole thing with php, js and css :D
4. I started with SMW+ (Datawiki), and there is a default skin "ontoskin3".
With them everythin is cool - so i think this skin "fixes" the createstylesheet problems.
But i cant figure out how - i analyzed the skins, and theyre very different - and im a nub in javascript and css.
I would be very very appreciated if someone could help me out here - i spend a lot of hours and im not able to get it working :D:
