Talk:Growth/March 2020 inventory

About this board

This page lists Template:Stub (Q5529697) as the stub template. However, many wikis have specialized stub templates like Template:Culture-stub (Q5903409), Template:Tech-stub (Q8665582) or Template:Law-stub (Q7834995). Using the general stub template is usually discouraged (so that editors willing to improve stubs on a given topic area more easily find them), but these specialized templates’ items cannot easily be found on Wikidata, as there’s no specific class (to be used for instance of (P31)) for them; moreover, although the main stub template’s item probably contains all or most stub templates, this is not necessarily true for specialized ones—for example, when I cited the above three top-level specialized stub templates, I found that only one out of three had a sitelink to huwiki, while all three have Hungarian equivalents (the other two had separate items for the huwiki equivalents, which I merged into the “international” ones).

Thank you for sharing this. This is helpful!

We have multiple cases to cover here. I looked the templates you linked, and the number of Wikipedia links listed there. I see 35 entries for the Culture one, 41 for the Tech one and 36 for the Law one. This to be compared to the 240 Wikipedia links I have for Template:Stub.

I also notice that wikis use the template:Stub use it with parameters, like {{stub|Culture|Law|Tech}}. Sometimes, this is the only available option. We have based our initial work on this configuration, but we also cover cases where multiple templates are used. So thank you for surfacing it!

I've added some other templates to the inventory, to cover cases where there are empty sections to fill.

About sub-classes, don't you think it would be possible to create these connexions on Wikidata?

Concerning the missing templates on Hungarian Wikipedia, this inventory is a good opportunity to link them to Wikidata.

There are some subclasses of Wikimedia template (Q11266439), and there’s even Wikimedia category of stubs (Q24046192). I think a “Wikimedia stub template” item may be created, but I don’t know if there should be any formal proposal for such items on Wikidata. (I linked these two templates to their English equivalent, but finding all lonely templates and fixing them is a quite large task, so I need some motivation to do that… For example that they will be used in this project. ;))

By the way, I also found Template:Asbox (Q10124657), which has almost a hundred sitelinks. Probably where this template exists, all (or almost all) stub templates use it. If you use backlinks to find problematic articles (and don’t, for example, analyze wikitext), this template can also be a good catch.

I've updated the maintenance templates list, and the task about Expanding an article already has 3 templates. When suggested Edits will be deployed to more wikis, communities will be able to edit the list of templates that match their wikis.

Any chance to put page as multilingual?

I’ve looked through every wikidata page and very interesting that each language wp has its own stance or high fever/cold feet towards new editors. Could be a great eye opener if we share what the page is about for non-english readers. Are you going to have the page stay here for months? Tech News readers not necessarily multilingual, might wish to see what’s going on, @Trizek.

The page title gives its goal: this in a punctual inventory. This inventory will lead to documentation pages that will be marked for translation. But if there is more requests for a translatable page, I can mark it for translation.

(Please be careful on mentioning the right account. :p)

Tutorials and introductions

Re: the "Tutorials" section and the link to d:Q915263...

Note that many wikidata site-links also already exist for

d:Q3945

and a few for

d:Q22955582

(such a mess...)

At least the first one, should probably be added in here?

Trizek (WMF) (talkcontribs)

Such a mess indeed!

We are really looking for tutorials, that show literally steps by steps. I don't think that Introductions or Welcome pages fit this, but they could be used as fallback/substitutes.

Thank you for the links!
