Expansion of features to existing page
[edit]Seems the side-by-side translation extension is only applicable if the topic page doesn't already exist in the translated language. (Or the newly translated content would cover the existing content.) Is there a way to enable the feature so that we could cross check between existing pages of the same topics to assure that the content between languages doesn't vary too much? Lesliechung26 (talk) 07:44, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
- If I'm not mistaken, there is a beta feature of that in some wikis. Euro know (talk) 10:44, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks @Euro know, would you have some references on the feature? Lesliechung26 (talk) 06:37, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
Ho sbagliato a pubblicare una traduzione
[edit]Scusate, ho pubblicato una traduzione per sbaglio, mentre stavo iniziando a provare a fare la prima. Come faccio a cancellarla? 5.90.140.202 (talk) 20:09, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
Votre traduction ne peut pas être publiée parce qu’elle contient trop de texte non modifié.
[edit]Bonjour, j'ai ce message pour la traduction en cours, en -> fr : coal gasification / Gazéification du charbon :
"Votre traduction ne peut pas être publiée parce qu’elle contient trop de texte non modifié / Your translation cannot be published because it contains too much unedited text."
Le problème est que la traduction, bien qu'imparfaite par nature, est assez bonne. Et de toutes façons, je pourrais mieux corriger en mode éditeur de code, une fois l'article publié.
Que faire ?

- Hello Shloren,
- All the language Wikipedia has machine translation limit that has been put in place to improve the quality of translations while using the Content Translation tool. Therefore, you will have to modify the initial machine translation to the limit allowed by the French Wikipedia before publishing the article. You can read more about the machine translation limit for better understanding.

Ability to sort suggestions?
[edit]Hello, I often "translate" to "Simple English", which is a smallish Wikipedia. When getting suggestions for a new translation, it might be useful to sort these based on the number of weekly views, and to also display the number of weekly views.
A very simple assumption might be, that articles that are viewed a lot in the source language might also be viewed a lot in the target language, and translating them might be attractive. Eptalon (talk) 15:43, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you Eptalon for your suggestions; I will table your proposal to the WMF language team. UOzurumba (WMF) (talk) 12:24, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
Is it possible to over-write the Machine Translation with a Wikipeda-specific dictionary?
[edit]For example, the "References" section header is always "Източници" (i.e., Sources) in the Bulgarian Wikipedia. There are similar conventions for "Early Life" and "Biography" for people, etc. (I use the Google Translate) Cryout (talk) 21:24, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
- This should be fairly easy to do. Another example:
- In 'Simple English':
- 'External links' should become 'Other websites'
- 'Related pages' will become 'see also'.
- Would just need defining a mapping. Eptalon (talk) 11:27, 15 January 2022 (UTC)
- We can define mappings for each language. A language's mappings could be in a page, from which the Machine Translation can "learn"..
- (In an advanced version, it could be topic-specific (biographies, geography, chemistry, etc.) - without overdoing it, because the Machine Translation should also get better over time.) Cryout (talk) 12:19, 15 January 2022 (UTC)
Should an intro template (infobox) copy over to the translated version?
[edit]This may be known, but I can't find the expected behavior in Content_translation/Templates, because it says that page is obsolete; in the link to Content translation/V2, I couldn't find the answer about the current expected behavior. I do see that "Better support for References and Templates" is a desired feature on the Roadmap. Please accept my apologies, if I'm missing something.
When I click in the blank space on the right pane (translation), the infobox from the left pane (the original) doesn't show up - not in original, or translated, or any version.
Example: Tableau_Software; trying to translate to Bulgarian. When I click the translation pane straight to the right of the Infobox, nothing shows up; if I copy the Infobox from the original, and parte it into the translation space, it just shows "Шаблон:Infobox company" in red font, as though that template doesn't exist in the Bulgarian version. It should exist: Template:Infobox company's linked counter-part in Bulgarian is Шаблон:Компания.
I'm on Firefox 96.0 (32-bit) on Windows. Cryout (talk) 21:42, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
Re-think workflow: Allow to 'add' to an already published article?
[edit]At the moment, I have the option of translating an article from one language to another. When I am done translating, the article 'gets published', and the work of content translation is done. I mostly work on small wikis (Simple English), so the first translation will almost always only cover part of the article.
What might be interesing is to 're-think the workflow:
- Suppose, there's an article, with 4 sections, and an intro. At the start, I 'translate' (and publish) the intro, and perhaps 1-2 sections (the more general ones, say)
- Later I have some time, and translating the 2 other sections might be interesting
I know that this is probably a bigger feature, and thought needs to be given, how to incorporate it into the user interface. Eptalon (talk) 21:52, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
- hi! In this way You are can publish part of translation in you personal namespace, and after copy "by hands" to article - I used this, but it's inconvenient
- Wll be greate - ability adding part of translation in new section in present article (for example: when article to small or new sections appear)
- Block's this function for novice and who have less 10 translated articles (for example)
- Best wishes Всевидяче Око (talk) 11:00, 14 January 2022 (UTC)

Incorporate some statistics tools?
[edit]I work with Simple English. Language comprehension also has a lot to do with some (probably boring) statistics: Shorter sentences are easier to understand. That way, a tool that would give the avg. sentence length (eg. for the section just translated), or that would point out sentences that are longer than average (or lonher than a predefined length in words) migfht be useful. Eptalon (talk) 21:56, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
- Hello Eptalon,
- Thank you for your suggestion of having a sentence length indicator feature in Content translation tool. You can also make this suggestion in the ongoing Community Wishlist Survey for better visibility and community voting. UOzurumba (WMF) (talk) 19:17, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
- This request might be similarly useful for the editor in general. Doesn't make too much sense to me if this is only implemented within the content translation interface. 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 11:34, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
Translations that are already done, are proposed...
[edit]As an Example: - 'Fibonacci-Folge' in German, translate to 'Simple English' Looking at EnWp, 'Fibonacci sequence' redirects to 'Fibnonacci number', which has an equivalent in Siple Enhlsh.
So please adapt the algorithm that proposes to properly handle redirects... Eptalon (talk) 11:38, 15 January 2022 (UTC)
The titel of the new page should come from Wikidata
[edit]The title of the new page should be taken directly from Wikidata instead of just retaining the original title as it is now. Also, the intro of the page should do the same with the bolded word if it corresponds directly. Sabelöga (talk) 21:02, 15 January 2022 (UTC)
- Hello Sabelöga,
- Sorry, I can't understand your message if it is a complaint about the Content translation tool or a suggestion about another tool. Please can you be more specific and provide more information? If your message is a complaint that has to do with Content translation, please provide the following information:
- Which article were you translating and to which language
- Which browser did you use (Firefox, Chrome, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera, etc.)
- If you're getting any errors, what is the error message?
- Thank you! UOzurumba (WMF) (talk) 18:59, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
- @UOzurumba (WMF) No, the primary issue I have with the tool Content Translaton is that the title of the page never gets translated. This is imo very strange. If I press the grey translate button on an article on fiwp for instance, and choose to translate the article into Swedish, the Swedish label on corresponding item on Wikidata should be pasted into the title bar on the translated article. This doesn't happen. So the title just stays in Finnish, and I have to manually add the title my self.
- This is unnecessary when the software could easily grab the corresponding language label from the corresponding Wikidata item (if available, other language labels should be ignored except fallback languages) and apply it.
- The other thing about the intro I suppose is a bit technical so ignore that. Sabelöga (talk) 21:45, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
The link "Visa riktlinjer för översättning" (approximately "Show guidelines for translations") points to wrong article
[edit]The link "Visa riktlinjer för översättning" (approximately "Show guidelines for translations") points to the English Wikipedia Wikipedia:Translation#How_to_translate even if the interface language Wikipedia has an corresponding article. Also the subsection How_to_translate doesn't exist anymore(!) Sabelöga (talk) 21:06, 15 January 2022 (UTC)
- Hello Sabelöga,
- Please, can you provide more details about this issue. Can you provide:
- screenshots of the problem
- link to the article you were translating and to which language
- Which browser did you use (Firefox, Chrome, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera, etc.)
- If you’re getting any errors, please provide the error message?
- Thank you and sorry about the issue you are having. UOzurumba (WMF) (talk) 18:34, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
- @UOzurumba (WMF)This link points to :en:Wikipedia:Translation#How_to_translate. This article exists, however the subsection "How to translate" doesn't. I'm editing from the Swedish version so this link should point to :sv:Wikipedia:Översättning. Sabelöga (talk) 21:59, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
Finnish translation doesn't seem to work
[edit]I'm translating from Finnish to Swedish and the tool just don't want to work. The translations doesn't show and the tool just pastes the Finnish without any work onto the translation column. I then have to translate manually. This is especialy weird since the tool works for other languages to Swedish. Sabelöga (talk) 21:08, 15 January 2022 (UTC)
How to correct "problematic content"
[edit]How to correct a text when we receive the message: "Improper content"? I translated a text and there is nothing improper in it, but, I guess because the text is about a woman who had a heart disease, the filters understand there is improper reference to the body. Sara Moreira Gomes (talk) 00:19, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
- Hello Sara Moreira Gomes,
- Please can you provide more details on the issue you are having? Details like:
- the link to the article you were translating and to which language?
- the error message you are getting
- and, if possible, a screenshot of the problem you encounter.
- Thank you. UOzurumba (WMF) (talk) 17:42, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
- Since you're talking about "filters", this might be a local problem about the configuration of the AbuseFilter extension and unrelated to ContentTranslation. 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 22:16, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
Source selection at Wikipedia Translate page doesn't work well
[edit]Please, e.g. article Deputy prime minister is missing in English on Wikipedia Translate page. Thank you a lot for the tool.
(It would be nice as well to have an export/import (local backup) possibility of the translation.)
Miroslav Ličko (talk) 09:10, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
- Hello Miroslav Ličko
- I just tried translating the article (Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom) from English to another language (Igbo), and nothing seems wrong. Unless the article mentioned above is not the one you intended. Also, thank you for your suggestion of having an export or import feature for the translations; it is noted. UOzurumba (WMF) (talk) 11:04, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
- Hello @UOzurumba (WMF)
- Please accept my thanks for taking note of the import/export function. Thank you.
- The difficulty with example Deputy prime minister is that the atricle https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deputy_prime_minister isn't on the list. However it is the exact match (and page of my interest).
- Could it be probably welcomed to have a vertical scrollbar and provide a little bit broader list of related pages?
- Please note that this is a comment rather than something of great importance.
- It is the first time it happened to me. It never happened before that I could not reach the source article of interest.
- Thank you Miroslav Ličko (talk) 11:39, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
- Hello Miroslav Ličko,
- Thank you for the clarification, I have filed a bug report for this issue. You can monitor work progress through this Phabricator ticket. UOzurumba (WMF) (talk) 08:58, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
Templates namespace
[edit]Hi. While trying to translate :en:Template:Self_reference/doc into :pt:Predefinição:Autorref/doc, I noticed the CTT didn't recognize Template:Self reference/doc without the ":en:" prefix. ~ Fgnievinski (talk) 20:18, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for the feedback, @Fgnievinski.
- Content Translation was designed to translate Wikipedia articles. Since it can be useful to translate other wiki content (or the use of other namespaces for specific article translation process) the tool supports the translation (an dpublication) in different namespaces.
- However, there are some namespaces that contain very different content that is not intended to be translated with the tool such as talk page conversations or template definition code. Thus, the team decided to not expose some of these namespaces.
- With your example you now bring a good point: unlike template code, the template documentation can be appropriately translated with Content Translation. However, since it is also living in the "Template" namespace it is not exposed in searches.
- I'll bring this issue to the team in order to discuss which could be the best approach to support this. Currently we are working on Section Translation and the new dashboard will eventually replace the current one in Content Translation. So we need to decide how the future dashboard will work in this case.
- The workaround you mention of preceding the page name with ":en:" was not an intended feature, but can be used until a permanent solution is created.
- Thanks! Pginer-WMF (talk) 15:00, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you! Fgnievinski (talk) 15:57, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
- Maybe the template namespace would deserve exception for "Your translation cannot be published because it contains too much unmodified text." as its content normally is very technical. Fgnievinski (talk) 05:13, 29 January 2022 (UTC)

Transfer from one column to the other
[edit]Hello,
I am translating my article about "La Société de Lecture" from French to English. I made a mistake in the translation of a paragraph in English. I wanted to move the French paragraph back to the right column but I can't do it anymore. It's like being stuck. Can someone explain to me what I have to do to transfer the rest of the paragraph about Lenin again? Thanks in advance. Have a good day. 178.196.237.92 (talk) 07:12, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
- Hello 178.196.237.92,
- When you say "transfer the rest of the paragraph about Lenin again", I can't understand what you mean. But, if your problem is to reset the paragraph to its original translation, then I can put you through it. All you have to do is:
- Click on the section you want to reset.
- Go to the "initial translation" panel on your right
- Click on the drop-down arrow and click on the "reset translation."
- Doing the above will take your translation back to the initial translation.
- I hope the above helps you. UOzurumba (WMF) (talk) 12:20, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
Editor connectivity
[edit]Hey, just wondering, but why's there no connectivity to other editors (source and visual)? I like using visual for most things (especially citing) and then doing finishing touches the source editor (mostly links, fixing spaces etc.). It's be great if the translation page allowed directly moving the translated text to either of those instead of directly publishing it. The links are not always functional in the intended way, can't move part of article around (I think?) so this would be amazing. Thank you. KormiSK (talk) 00:18, 22 January 2022 (UTC)
- Btw, I'm asking this solely to avoid publishing and then having to edit again. I'd like to do it all at once before publishing the article. KormiSK (talk) 00:25, 22 January 2022 (UTC)
Incorrect language of the tool
[edit]Not sure if this belongs here but: When translating to Slovak, parts of the tool are in Czech (seems to be errors, mostly), which is mostly not an issue but it's somewhat ironic. Can I help translating those parts of text to Slovak? Where do I ask about this? KormiSK (talk) 00:23, 22 January 2022 (UTC)
- If you are talking about the tool's interface, you can probably help translate that at translatewiki:Special:Translate/ext-contenttranslation (requires a separate account). 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 11:14, 5 February 2022 (UTC)

Templates could be localized via Wikidata ILL
[edit]For example, Template:Excerpt would become :pt:Predefinição:Excerto; see Q59309762. ~ Fgnievinski (talk) 19:39, 26 January 2022 (UTC)
- It could also follow redirects, for example, :en:Template:Guideline in a nutshell redirects to :en:Template:Nutshell, which would become :pt:Predefinição:Resumo. ~ Fgnievinski (talk) 04:54, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
- There is a big task in Phabricator. 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 11:57, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for the feedback, @Fgnievinski. I can see the value of providing access to "some" knowledge in the absence of an existing article in a given wiki. However, we need to consider that the Interlanguage Links ("ILL") template (as any other template) is not guaranteed to exist on all wikis, and that adding such template requires extra clean-up work when/if the local article is created.
- This adds significant complexity to support this currently. From my perspective, a better solution would be to have some way to be able to annotate red links with their Wikidata ID. So that this information could be surfaced dynamically to the user for them to access if interested. Pginer-WMF (talk) 11:08, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, I was too terse. By " Wikidata ILL" I meant :en:Help:Interlanguage links#Wikidata, not :en:Help:Interlanguage_links#Inline_links_(links_in_the_text_of_the_article). So the proposal would be to translate the template names when Wikidata indicates the existence of a corresponding template in other Wikipedias. Fgnievinski (talk) 14:16, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
Links
[edit]This has likely come up elsewhere, but; translation at least to Slovak automatically puts a space after each link (which is quite annoying). Besides that, links that do not exist show the option to "add a red link", but upon addition, even if the page does not exist, the link shows as blue majority of the time for whatever reason (and no, it is not because of a page with the same name existing on ENWiki), which renders the red coloration useless and also provides misinformation (as it does not show up as a red link). KormiSK (talk) 22:44, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
Can't publish translation
[edit]It keeps accusing that my translation has more than 99% of unmodified text, which is not true at all. I've spent 1:40 hours translating and editing the page. Many terms were complitely wrong and I had to change every single time it was mentioned in the text. Also, I can't change too much, or else it will accuse the text has offensive words (when I changed "de laboratórios" to "laboratoriais" it said it was inappropriate?????). Natalia.de.Araujo (talk) 21:10, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
- Also, it does not matter how many times I "mark as resolved" (marque como resolvido) the problem is never resolved and keeps reappearing over and over and over again.
- I can't just change the translation because "it is unmodified". If it is right, there is no reason to change it. Or am I supposed to change every single word for their synonyms? Natalia.de.Araujo (talk) 21:16, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
- Based on the terms ("laboratórios", etc.) I assume you're translating into Portuguese? If so, it seems their abuse filter has a heavy hand and gets confused by bibliography kept in English. I'd suggest reporting the issue there: https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikip%C3%A9dia:Filtro_de_edi%C3%A7%C3%B5es/18#Tentando_adicionar_tradu%C3%A7%C3%A3o_de_se%C3%A7%C3%A3o_em_artigo Fgnievinski (talk) 05:31, 31 January 2022 (UTC)
