We suggest checking the Frequently Asked Questions page first.

When reporting a bug, it will help us a lot if you will indicate the following things:

  • Which article were you translating and to which language
  • Which browser did you use (Firefox, Chrome, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera, etc.)
  • If you're getting any errors, please provide log from browser console if possible. To open browser console: press Ctrl+Shift+J (or Cmd+Shift+J on a Mac).

In case you are familiar with phabricator, please consider reporting a bug there.

I am having problem with loading saved translations which are from en to zhs. The page remains displaying "Loading the saved translation..." with no translation really loaded, no matter how long time elapses. Should the administrators solve this issue? Not sure if this is a global issue.

KartikMistry (talkcontribs)

Hi,

Can you give article name? I can check for any errors in the log quickly after that.

Thanks!

IrisLin (talkcontribs)

Thanks, Kartik. Were you asking for the English article name or the translated version? The English article name is "Technical writer".

KartikMistry (talkcontribs)

Thanks. It seems saving and loading article is working fine for me. Please provide console errors if any (To open browser console: press Ctrl+Shift+J (or Cmd+Shift+J on a Mac)). Also, correct language code for zhs is zh. See if that is useful.

IrisLin (talkcontribs)

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I confirmed the language code is zh. Here is the console errors I copied out:

I am ready to translate Wiki articles from English and Danish to Mon language. But Mon language is not available in content translation. Mon is my native language and I am living in Denmark.

Amire80 (talkcontribs)

Hi,

Unfortunately, Mon is not available in Content Translation because it is still in Incubator. Using Content Translation with languages in Incubator may become possible some day, but not yet. For now, it's only possible to translate articles in Incubator by simply writing a new article.

Htawmonzel (talkcontribs)

thanks for replying Amire80.

Thanks for a great translation tool, It really inspired me to translate many articles from Swedish to French.

There is a minor design issue, the column on the right-hand side, is of almost no use at all, yet I cannot figure out how collapse or close it... I am very near-sighted, and I like to zoom quite a lot when I read on a screen. The third column takes much space, and thus the display on 3 columns makes each column very narrow.

Hans Haase (talkcontribs)

The right column can not be collapsed. The only way would be to enlarge the browser window exceed the screen.

Gastonphoebus8 (talkcontribs)

Thanks Hans for the answer.

I suspected that it could not be done. Where can I request that feature?

Cheers

Creo que la nueva versión debería tener además de tener Apertium y Yandex debería tener Google Traslate porque todavía creo que Apertium y Yandex no están capacitados para traducir artículos con todos los errores que tienen

Ignacio2403 (talkcontribs)

I think the new version should have besides having Apertium and Yandex should have Google Traslate because I still believe that Apertium and Yandex are not able to translate articles with all the errors they have

Ignacio2403 (talkcontribs)

Realmente es muy util poder insertar plantillas

Difficulty for translating model {{Infobox book}} > {{Infobox livre}}

Pierre Raymond Esteve (talkcontribs)

Hi. I have translated into a first personal page after corrections of the automatic translation of the english article "Regular Polytopes (book)" to "Polytopes Réguliers (livre)" in french which can be obtained with https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utilisateur:Pierre_Raymond_Esteve/Polytopes_R%C3%A9guliers_(livre)

But i have failed to translate and apply properly the first model {{Infobox book}} which starts the english article with {{nfobox livre}} in french. As a consequence i have been unable to insert the nice image of the ''Cover of the Dover edition''.of the book of Coxeter "Regular Polytopes". Without this image the french translated article is uncomplete and i hesitate to publish it in main. Thanks for your help. @Pierre Raymond Esteve

Hans Haase (talkcontribs)

The picture https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Regular_Polytopes_cover_Dover.jpg ist hosted in the English project only due using the Fair Use license. An usage in other projects might cause a copyright violation. Even when pictures are hosted on Wikimedia Commons, which makes them avail in all projects and other Mediawiki installations, always care about the given license of each used picture.

Pierre Raymond Esteve (talkcontribs)

Thank you Hans Haase for your answer but if i understand it does that means that I cannot use this jpg picture in my translated article nor as a consequence transpose in french the model {{Infobox book}} of the original english article [[Regular Polytopes (book) ]] ? Best regards. @Pierre Raymond Esteve

Pginer-WMF (talkcontribs)

Thanks for the feedback, @Pierre Raymond Esteve.

@Hans Haase is right, Content Translation only transfers across languages images which are on Commons.

We have plans to better communicate why local images could not be transferred to the translation (more details in this ticket). However these improvements will be done as part of the new version of Content Translation, where we are focusing our efforts to deliver a more solid tool that provides better guidance.

Hans Haase (talkcontribs)

We have several way to transfer a picture to commons, but all these ways need to care for license and rights of the author, which the revision history of Wikipedia does. Is this case I recommend not to use the picture, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Regular_Polytopes_cover_Dover.jpg#Licensing

As the picture uses a low resolution, similar as just quoting a picture, see that Fair use allows and where it can be used. Simplifed to say: At the moment this means outside the US, using the picture will be a copyright violation.

I, when i wanted to translate from the english Carl Pfeiffer (Pharmacologist) into Carl Pfeiffer in french, it was bugged first with an error when published in sandbox telling in french Le titre de la page demandée contient des caractères non valides  : " " .

Nevertheless I translated later manually in this article in my sandbox into french and published it recently in main the article Carl Pfeiffer - Wikipédia corresponding to the following link https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Pfeiffer

But the badly translated article still remain and I don't know how to supress it if i want to continue applying your translation's tool ?

Thanks in advance for your help. Cordially. @Pierre Raymond Esteve

Hans Haase (talkcontribs)

Translated articles seem to remain in a connection with its source. Have an administrator delete your sandbox when You have completed the transfer. Avoid using the sandbox inside the CXT. When publishing an article as personal draft, it uses Your user namespace on a page with its destination name. After completing, You can move it into the article namespace. When a published translation remains listed in the CXT, just ignore it.

Pierre Raymond Esteve (talkcontribs)

Thank you Hans Haase

I have been able to delete my translation in progress already published just by clicking on the right corner garbage sign. Thank you. @Pierre Raymond Esteve

Framawiki (talkcontribs)

Bonsoir Pierre Raymond Esteve.

Pierre Raymond Esteve (talkcontribs)

Cordialement. @Pierre Raymond Esteve

Just see that strange font html tags are added by the tool, see for example . See also other occurrences on this wiki ... cleaned

Cow me, please! (talkcontribs)

It is terrible in templates

Pginer-WMF (talkcontribs)

Thanks for the feedback, @Framawiki,

This seems the result of the sentence highlighting leaking into the final published content. Content Translation uses the default browser editing surface which is very limited and makes it hard to isolate User Interface elements (such as the highlight) from the content. Currently we are working on the next version of Content Translation which uses a more solid editing surface. As a result we expect a much cleaner content produced as a result.

The link above contains instructions on how to try the new version (still in development but usable to translate articles already). Feel free to try and report any issue you may find with it.

Further translation to a page that already exist, and who can do so

Estheriska (talkcontribs)

Hi,

I read on the FAQ that the Content Translating tool was focused on creating the first version of a published page, and to make any further edits to it, it'd be best to go on the page directly and click 'edit'. Why then does it shows suggestions of pages to translate that already exist in the target language?

And why does it show this note above the page, I thought from the FAQ that all log in users could use the translation tool:

Translate page - Note: This utility is currently restricted to extended confirmed editors on the English Wikipedia, see WP:CXT for more information.

Thank you!

Hans Haase (talkcontribs)

As the CXT is still under development, programmers need to separate technical issues form bad faith usage. Using the CXT also requires a proper translation. Note that translated articles may stay connected in the revision of the translation, but required to be imported due taking caring of the editors license and avoid a legal issue. You can achieve the extended user status by contributing 500 constructive edits inside the local language project. This information is several weeks old. But only the English project has been restricted in this way.

Mussharraf Hossen Shoikot (talkcontribs)

so to allow use of this tool in the stated projects. highly needed.

Pginer-WMF (talkcontribs)

Thanks for the feedback, @Mussharraf Hossen Shoikot.

It is really great to hear that Content Translation is considered to be potentially useful for projects other than Wikipedia. I agree that it makes perfect sense to support better the translation process in wikibooks and wikisource.

Each project has its own particularities in terms of content (e.g., different templates) and workflows, and we need to consider these before integrating the tool. For now, our focus is to make the tool more robust (you can read more about the plans for the new version) before expanding the scope to more projects. Once the tool is stable we are definitely interested in exploring the support for other projects as next steps. If you have feedback on the particularities of those projects to take into account when adapting the tool there feel free to share them. That will be very useful to plan these future efforts.

Thanks!

Hello, I've been translating https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontiac_G6 into my language (Czech). Everything worked nicely, however after almost being finished and ready to publish, some parts of the page stuck and I couldn't write into them, delete them or edit them at all. So I've decided to close the page and load it up again, however, after doing that, the right half of the page where my translations are is in some kind of grey box and I can't do anything - write, edit, delete, not even publish and then fix it. I really don't want to lose the translations I made (I can't copy the text.). Is there any solution to this issue?

I am using Chrome.

Martin Urbanec (talkcontribs)

Hello, I strongly recommend screenshoting your translations. In worst case, you can re-write them from screenshot and you don't need to translate them again. Unfortunately, I don't know any solution. You might try to press F12 and copy translations from HTML, but I'm not sure if will be easy to find.

Spesini (talkcontribs)

Thanks, screenshoting is a good idea, it seems I'll have to rewrite the translation using them. However, as of right now, I can't pretty much complete the translation, because even if I delete the whole page and then try and start a completely new translation, it loads up this stuck translation again.

Spesini (talkcontribs)

Well, I finally somehow solved the problem by just pretty much spamming the publish button, after I've tried to publish it for quite some time without success it finally let me (interestingly without changing anything) - I then edited the rest of the page after it was published.

Thanks for the help!
