About this board

Please provide feedback about the Content translation tool on this page.

We suggest checking the Frequently Asked Questions page first.

When reporting a bug, it will help us a lot if you will indicate the following things:

  • Which article were you translating and to which language
  • Which browser did you use (Firefox, Chrome, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera, etc.)
  • If you're getting any errors, please provide log from browser console if possible. To open browser console: press Ctrl+Shift+J (or Cmd+Shift+J on a Mac).
  • Which version of Content Translation are you using. If you see "Try the new version" on the dashboard, it's version 1. If you see "Using the new version" on the dashboard, it's version 2.

In case you are familiar with Phabricator, please consider reporting a bug there.

Cannot start translation when others have started

How can I translate while others have already started?

I translated the Infobox of the :en:RailGiants Train Museum, but the translation got lost in the tool. I'm back to that state, where the empty Infobox was added in the German article, when I pressed on the English box. All the content i put there, is gone. (Yes, there was an indication on top of the page, that the article has been saved. Yes, I pressed save after editing the Infobox. The Infobox editing window was closed and the Infobox showed the correct translated content. There were vertical scroll bars on the infobox, so I could scroll up and down to see all the content) --~~~~

Hans Haase (talkcontribs)

Autosaving of translation failed. I suggest not to translate an incomplete article. Complete the English article, first. Ntl the translation seems lost due failure. The temple exists but need to the assigned manually.

Pechristener (talkcontribs)

Sorry, I understood only the first sentence, that the autosaving failed.

What is translating an incomplete article? Do you want to say, that the article in English is poor? (Yes, it is, but this should not hinder to be a base for a translation)

Yes, the template exists and I completed it manually before, (nothing wrong with it) but now the content is lossed.

Hans Haase (talkcontribs)

Yes, indeed. Translating an incomplete or poor article opens a second construction site. If the missing information is not reachable, just continue to provide any information. It is a question for a developer it any previous versions are accessible. But anyway, try to publish as a personal draft to see if it is really lost. This also would prevent the error of an already existing destination page. If a loading error occurs, wait until an answer from developer.

Pechristener (talkcontribs)

Tried to publish it as a personal draft. This is not possible since I receive the message 'to much unaltered machine translated text'. I don't care that I lost the infobox translation - I can redo it, but I thought that I have to mention this bug since the first translation tool has also the flaw of loosing data, what can be very frustrating for the users.

Pginer-WMF (talkcontribs)

Thanks for the feedback, @Pechristener.

The problem you describe seems related to this ticket. We plan to solve the problems for saving content in templates, which should address the problem for infoboxes in particular. Feel free to comment or track the progress of the ticket.

correct: ticket T190678 is my issue.--~~~~

Ability to delete an old translation

Doc James (talkcontribs)

I am wanting the ability to fully delete an old translation that has not been finished yet so that I can start over. I see a "garbage can" but even after deleting it and reading the article in question the old translation appears again.

Hans Haase (talkcontribs)

It seems to work with the new version now, but it still seems to transfer it in the list of published articles or finished translations. Else, we still need the workaround from three months ago. Groundhog Day! Topic:Un9rni9juav4g4zl

Doc James (talkcontribs)

I am using the V2 translator. I pull up the artricle which I have previously deleted and the old version that was deleted pops back into existence. Maybe it is that the version I am wanting to delete was created with V1 and than loads automatically in V2?

Hans Haase (talkcontribs)

It force me to change, just reaching than V2. All articles appeared like in V1.

The Living love (talkcontribs)

I can't translate with mobile phone why?

Pginer-WMF (talkcontribs)

Thanks for the feedback, @The Living love.

Currently there is an issue that prevents access to the tool from mobile (more details in this ticket). Even when it is possible to access Content translation onmobile, it may not provide an optimized translation experience on mobile.

In the future we plan to better support translation on mobile (an initial exploration of ideas in this ticket), and we are very interested in hearing from users that translate on mobile or those interested in doing so. So it would be helpful to hear more about your experience: have you translated content on mobile with Content translation or other tools before? What makes translating on mobile convenient/interesting/useful for you?

The Living love (talkcontribs)

Yes of course, I did. Although translating on mobile isn't as convenient or interesting as doing on a computer, but sometimes you just need to, because for an editor like me who don't own a computer or have access to them might find it difficult to say must have got a computer before doing something that's needed from him. But by the way I've seen some of the translations that's done using the tool, its really accurate andthe only thing needed is to do some proofread and copyedits after. Thank you so much for the reply, I even thought it was a problem my mobile has.

Distelfinck (talkcontribs)

When I copy something from the translation tool, and want to paste it into a Wikipedia article (using Visual Editor), nothing gets pasted.

I have noticed that I can circumvent this by using "Paste as plain text" from the context menu, but obivously this loses all the formatting.

Pginer-WMF (talkcontribs)

Thanks for the feedback, @Distelfinck.

I tried to reproduce the issue but copying and pasting content from Content Translation to Visual Editor works for me. Can you confirm that you are using the new version of Content Translation, and indicate the browser and operating system you used?

Hit AbuseFilter: Запрет на редактирование Template CSS

ParticipantOfTheEncyclopedia (talkcontribs)

Hello. "Запрет на редактирование" means "Edit ban Template CSS".

I tried to translate an article. Suddenly the References section was moved. Later i decided to publish an article, but i could not due to that error.

How to fix that?

Translation: Article Bloons Tower Defense from English to Russian.

Browser: Chrome

Version: 2, but in the 1st it still couldn't work.

Pginer-WMF (talkcontribs)

Thanks for the feedback, @ParticipantOfTheEncyclopedia.

Abuse filters are defined by each community to identify potentially problematic content. These are applied to new content created with Content translation or any other tool. The particular abuse filter preventing you from publishing is defined here. This filter seems aimed to prevent template css editing and I'm not sure why it is triggered by the content you are trying to publish which seems unrelated to that. We'll be looking into this in more detail.

Transliteration from Latin scripts to other ones

Helmoony (talkcontribs)

Hi folks! I'm just wondering if you are planning to develop a tool for transliteration from Latin language (.. and English language) to non-Latin scirpts (Arabic language in my case). To create species articles by bot, the only thing missing for us is a transliteration of scientific names. That will help a lot of non-Latin scipt languages to reach 1 million articles faster. Google Translate is not usefull and Microsoft tool is not helpfull either. Thank you in advance.

Hans Haase (talkcontribs) is also not useful and seems not able to be implemented. As these translation machines learn from user inputs, sometimes referring the Wikipedia, it can not be solved by one person only. It is up to several users to make the translation machines for these languages useful, by making many useful translations, the machines can learn from. But it needs a manual start by a machine operator, we do not know if started already. But using You can suggest a better translation. Cookies are used to know to operation user. May be a better suggestion affects the next translation. So the machine has learned in time. As I translated other languages with the Wikipedia CXT, and used a non existing name, which was seen as a simple word, the machine copied it for translating the next section. As the machine had feedback before translation the next section, it learned in time.

FF-11 (talkcontribs)

Note that the (unfree) translations will be checked by the "Translation Community". Some suggestions for a better translation are shown to them and they have to decide which of them are right and which are wrong.

SenseiAC (talkcontribs)

Hello, Is it normal that we cannot choose directly to which article we want to link some text? When overlining some text, only one suggestion appears, so we have to accept it and then modify it to get the wanted link, rather than directly chosing the correct link as before. Also, if no article is found when overlining some text, not any article can be linked to the text. I feel that it was much better before on this point. I however like the Google translation, that seems to be quite better than the one that was before.

Pginer-WMF (talkcontribs)

Thanks for the feedback, @SenseiAC.

The editing toolbar provides a link tool that allows you to select the target page you want.

When selecting text in the translation a suggestion is surfaced for easy access if a Wikipedia article exists for it, but the link tool mentioned above is always available. If that is not the case, let us know and we'll investigate this in more detail.
