Not able to delete a page
[edit]The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Hello, I am trying to delete a page - and keep getting this error message.
A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was:from within function "
(SQL query hidden)
Article::doDeleteArticle". MySQL returned error "1364: Field 'ar_text' doesn't have a default value (10.50.225.19)".
anyone knows how to fix that? 108.171.130.167 (talk) 22:52, 5 January 2018 (UTC)
- Please post support questions to Project:Support desk! Create your question there and please provide your MediaWiki version. The error you posted can't happen on recent versions of MediaWiki at least, because the deletion explicitly sets ar_text to an empty string on insert, and the error is produced when a row is inserted without providing a value for ar_text. Crud (create , read, update, delete)using external data

I need to create a page that will query external sql data and display the result on that page.
Also any user can edit the data and will automatically update the external sql database/.
Is there already such available extension ? Aag2010 (talk) 13:53, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
- This page is for issues on MediaWiki.org website, not for support questions, please read the description of this board.
- Also, MediaWiki is a documentation system, not a CRUD. There's no such extension, but if you have knowledge of PHP you may he able to come up with something to do that. A CRUD is something very specific (database, table, fields to update, layout, etc) that I would be surprised to find anything ready to use. Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 16:29, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
- The Cargo extension could perhaps be what you're looking for. It can be used to query data in a database, and to write to it. I'm not sure how it goes doing both at once—you might have to first import your data into your wiki, if you want to be able to update it from the wiki. Sam Wilson 22:09, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

is there a way to verify / review a page before publishing?
Step 1: a user is editing or creating a article, after finishing it is not published
Step 2: a user of a "reviewer-groupe" can confirm the change or new page -> published 2A02:8108:54BF:DAA0:25DA:C7D6:A4D6:6082 (talk) 19:46, 17 January 2018 (UTC)

Sysops can now add/remove the translation administrator group to self
[edit]The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Someone told me about this a couple of days ago, but I haven't seen it announced (well, not that I'm really subscribed to news mailing lists or whatever), so I find relevant to announce it here:
Bureaucrats on Wikimedia wikis where the Translate extension is installed can now add and remove the translation administrator permission by default. Administrators of wikis where this extension is enabled can add and remove this permission to or from themselves. Wikis that used a different configuration before have not changed.
This is going to be useful when there's a need to delete/rename a page marked for translation, and no translation admin is looking at this board, because admins by default aren't granted the translation administrator group by default.

How do you undo translations?
[edit]Is there a convenient way of undoing (spam/obviously-incorrect) translations? The translation tool is probably great for doing piecemeal translation of individual messages/sections, but I cannot find any edit history or other useful mechanisms for reverting or inspecting changes within it, and having to go through the tool in order to undo something also loses the edit context (position/which-message) of the edit-to-be-undone. Is there any way to find the edit history of individual section/message translations and revert edits within the tool, or is there some way to bypass it? (I also cannot find any help/documentation on using the translation tool, at least not linked from the tool itself.) Clump (talk) 16:38, 11 March 2018 (UTC)
- I have to go to the contributions page of the user I need to revert, and find the translatable unit that I have to revert (

Get rid of references to abandoned extensions.
[edit]If an extension does not work with at least one version of MediaWiki that's receiving security support, then there is no reason for it to be easily discoverable. Let it die, make the only place with any mention of it a simple list of abandoned extensions that's not indexed by search engines and stop give those coming here from Google search or following links false hope.
The experience of following link after link after link to abandoned is extremely frustrating, and reflects ppoorly on the MediaWiki ecosystem as a whole, even if the core developers bear no responsibility. 2606:A000:140A:11A:7CC6:7FDA:42AD:1F5A (talk) 23:49, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
- WordPress does this by excluding from search those plugins that have not been updated within two years. It's hard to do that with the current system of extension searching being just the same as the normal site-search. Phab:T118188 is probably of interest. Sam Wilson 00:35, 13 March 2018 (UTC)

- ERROR mwstore://local-backend/local-public/ is not a meaningful error message. It lacks a verb. It's like saying "I the whole internet". It means nothing.
- Please post your question to the right place --> Project:Support desk. And also provide a complete and exact error message. MediaWiki extension and feature bounties using cryptocurrencies?

How to discuss (1) people of color (2) mixed people in history
[edit]The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
When discussing the history of George John Frederick Clarke the section that describes his personal life is written in a stereotypical fashion that suggests that Clarke had a mixed race relationship. In fact he had a mixed race "marriage" He lived with Flora Leslie Clarke and together they raised their eight children. This is supported by the fact that (a) some of his children lived in his home in Fernandina and again in St. Augustine while Flora, when she became ill lived with their daughter Felicia. Furthermore, (b) Clarke financially assisted each of his children when needed and (c) each of his children were given 1/8th of his estate.
As for the descriptions of people of color (naturally each area must be taken individually) but we can begin with Adrian Piper who ended up writing her own web page There is my bio which has been left out even given the fact that I am discussed in the page on the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Where We At Black Women Artists (there may be other pages I haven't gone through every one. Any plan to update Help:Magic Words?
[edit]I am translating Help:Magic Words, and think this page will be very helpful for new editors. However, it says to see Extension:StringFunctions, but when I open that page, it notes:
- This extension is obsolete. All of these functions are now integrated into the ParserFunctions extension, but are only available if an administrator sets
$wgPFEnableStringFunctions = true;inLocalSettings.php. The documentation of these functions remains here.
- MediaWiki's core magic words implement
urlencodeandpadleft/padright.
Is there any better way to help eager new editors avoid confusion, or at the moment, I am afraid those two pages don't coordinate in parts. Any idea? Omotecho (talk) 12:01, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
- The problem with that page is that it's both the documentation of string functions and the page for the StringFunction extension
- The documentation for string functions should probably be in a Help: namespace, the same way we have Help:Extension:ParserFunctions Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 19:24, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

- You aren't "supposed" to get unreleased versions. If they're not released yet, it's because they're not thought to be ready yet. Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 21:20, 29 May 2018 (UTC)
- Jdforrester: That's nonsense. MediaWiki 1.31 is a Release Candidate. How can people test it to see if there are bugs previous to formal release if it isn't made available?
- Also, that's not the object of the question. The box at the top-rigt of the page contains the following items:
- MediaWiki 1.27 (legacy - LTS)
- MediaWiki 1.29 (legacy)
- MediaWiki 1.30 (stable)
- MediaWiki 1.32 (alpha; git master)
- The problem is that MediaWiki 1.31 is not appearing there (but 1.32 is!). Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 08:38, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
Regular end-users are absolutely not the right audience for Release Candidate software. The people looking to test it out are likely expert MediaWiki sysadmins, developers, and others who follow the mediawiki-l mailing list, not the more normal kinds of sysadmins who aren't necessarily expert in how labyrinthine bugs in MediaWiki can be explored. That's nonsense. MediaWiki 1.31 is a Release Candidate. How can people test it to see if there are bugs previous to formal release if it isn't made available?
Wait a week or whatever and it'll appear when it's released. I don't see this as a problem. When 121… asked "How am I supposed to easily get to the soon to be released next version without manually searching for it?", and answer is "you aren't".The problem is that MediaWiki 1.31 is not appearing there (but 1.32 is!).
- (If instead you want to debate having a link to the bleeding-edge master in the list, that's a fine discussion point, but not really the question asked.) Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 15:57, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
- If the alpha version is there, the release candidate clearly should be too. It's simply easy navigation between relevant versions.
- As for why should someone have easy access, maybe they want to easily see what is the upcoming version either because they are looking to update when it comes out, or are a user looking at the new features for when the wiki they use is updated? 192.232.155.200 (talk) 06:01, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

Where should I ask for marking pages for translation?
[edit]The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Three questions:
- What is the best place to find the answer to question number 2?
- What is the best place to ask for marking pages for translation?
- Can someone mark Help:Notifications/Notifications types for translation, please. Pipetricker (talk) 16:29, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
- I don't know where it could be asked. Probably this is a good place to do that.
- Anyway, translation administrators have a page to list all pages with pending changes that need to be marked for translations, I'd assume they would routinely review them,
but seeing there are more than 3000(!) pages marked for translation but with pending changes, maybe someone is not doing their duties... - Edit: I've now taken a closer look to this special page, and apparently not all listed pages have pending changes, which makes that page not so useful at all. It's hard to check for pages that require approval if one needs to check the action links and see if a "mark for translation" link exists. There aren't so many pages that need to be reviewed, then.
- PS: I've marked that page for translation. Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 16:56, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply and for the admin action. It seems like the bolded links on Special:PageTranslation are the pages with changes which are not marked for translation (I did a search for documentation of that, but couldn't find any). Pipetricker (talk) 17:43, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
Web banner about EU Parliament Copyright Directive vote of 5 June 2018
[edit]The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Good afternoon, some wikipedias are showing a homepage web banner and have blocked users'edits, in order to sensitize the public opinion about the Directive Proposal the European Parliament will vote on 5 June.
Connecting by a PC to es.wikipedia.org and it.wikipedia.org homepage:
- it.wikipedia shows a disclaimer which asks Javascripts has been enabled in the Internet browser. By a PC website connection, users won't see anything both for the desktop and for the mobile version.
- es.wikipedia has blocked articles'editing, but there is no redirect to the disclaimer, even when users try to edit any article.
So the reasons of this editing block seem not to be explained to the users with a fixed connection device.
De and fr.wikipedia hasn't any disclaimer or editing block.
The Directive Proposal impacts Internet citizens of all the Europe, and legitimates itself by virtue of the continental dimension of the copyright matter.
For this reason, it will be more effective a common form of civil action, coordinated among wikipedia of different languages.

Semi-protect all subpages of Extension:FileImporter/Data?

- For obvious reasons. This may be done by adding
Extension:FileImporter\/Data\/.* <autoconfirmed|noedit>to MediaWiki:Titleblacklist. GZWDer (talk) 21:16, 13 August 2018 (UTC)- Done. But I think this should have had some more discussion. ☠MarkAHershberger☢(talk)☣ 23:10, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for that, having these page semi-protect is definitely a must. Christoph Jauera (WMDE) (talk) 10:23, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
- Why is the code written that way? That seems like a massive architectural mistake. Anything trusted even within the Wikimedia cluster like that should be in the MediaWiki namespace at least (and probably locked down to be JSON or whatever content model so only technical admins can edit them). Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 21:46, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
- Since the FileImporter replaces/improves tools that the communities used for getting the job done, one very successful tool among those ( the Commonshelper ) was the gauge for the stuff we wanted to achieve with the FileImporter. The config structure and 'files' from that tool were used to have a good starting point for the changes made by the importer.
- The relatively simple structure gives an easy way to maintain these by the communities and we see that more as a feature. Christoph Jauera (WMDE) (talk) 10:22, 14 August 2018 (UTC)

User:PlavorSeol has been making changes to Manual:User rights that go against the guidelines set forth in Manual:Coding conventions/PHP[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. In two cases, they reverted me (and in one case another editor) with a claim of "Vandalism Recovery", in spite of the fact that I and the other editor were restoring the page to compliance with the coding conventions. I left a message on PlavorSeol's talk page which they never responded to, instead resolving it and summarizing it as "Just don't vandalize it. I WILL REVERT IT ANYWAY." At no point has PlavorSeol explained why they are making this change, or why they believe the reversions back to the coding conventions-compliant version are vandalism. 「ディノ奴千?!」☎ Dinoguy1000 15:30, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

Make Template:See also translatable
[edit]I think Template:See also should be properly translatable. If I'm coming across this one while translating, I don't really know what to do with it. MGChecker (talk) 19:53, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
- It is already translatable, see for instance Manual:Coding_conventions/ja and search "関連項目:". When creating a page, you have to use:
{{TNT|See also|...}}instead of{{See also|...}}to make it translated when the template has been translated (currently English, Hungarian, Japanese, German). ~ Seb35 [^_^] 16:17, 24 September 2018 (UTC) - Wouldn't it be better to use Extension:Translate instead of maintaining a individual version for each language? MGChecker (talk) 18:58, 24 September 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, indeed. There is no major issue for the template itself, but there is the documentation pages in German and Japanese (see subpages). I don’t know if there are recommendations to do that.
- I see that Template:Extension/fr/doc is a standalone (non-Tranlate) page, and it seems to be the case for most or all Category:Template documentation pages (a Translate documentation page would end with a language code and I see none in the category). Hence it could be done like that for our template. (I don’t have time as of now, will continue to see that later.) ~ Seb35 [^_^] 08:18, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
- I have made the template translatable! Shirayuki (talk) 11:47, 28 September 2018 (UTC)
- I think the actual problem because of which I mentioned this template here is that it's difficult to translate in practice, as label and target differ in practice in all languages except for Englisch. How are we supposed to handle this? MGChecker (talk) 16:03, 28 September 2018 (UTC)
- We should use {{ll}} to save translators' time. e.g. {{ll|Manual:Coding conventions}} → Manual:Coding conventions
- But ll does not work for interwiki links... Shirayuki (talk) 01:06, 29 September 2018 (UTC)
- Could we use this in See also if no Interwiki is provided? Is there any way to detect Interwiki links by Lua or something similar? MGChecker (talk) 14:13, 29 September 2018 (UTC)
Distinction between MediaWiki X.XX and Release notes/X.XX pages
[edit]- Currently, we have pages of both these types, for example MediaWiki 1.27 and Release notes/1.27. This has the upsides that there is
- a quick overview of the changes done
- not so much content to translate on MediaWiki X.XX
- Release notes/X.XX can basically be pasted from the source file
- However, MediaWiki 1.31 choses a different approach: It copies the content of Release notes, restructures it, adds links and further documentation at some places (Database for example). This has these upsides:
- It finally feels like a proper documentation about a MediaWiki release.
- More of the documentation is translated
- The Release notes have helpful phabricator links
- However, you invest much more work in translating the stuff in section Upgrade notices for MediaWiki developers, which I don't think is useful to anyone. Everyone who wants to develop in MediaWiki must be able to contribute some basic English to understand the documentation, and it's so much to translate as well, that I don't think it's worth the effort.
- That's why I think we should do a compromise:
- We keep the Release notes page, but add links there to Phabricator in the future.
- We keep creating more verbose MediaWiki X.XX, except for the Upgrade notices for MediaWiki developers section. However, I think the Action API changes are quite important for bot developers and should stay.
- P.S.: Today is the day I learned about Wikitext editing in StructuredDiscussions. I'm really happy. MGChecker (talk) 17:20, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
- I don't think I understand your proposal, so I can't comment usefully on it (even though you've already rushed to enact it, it seems). When you say
… do you meanWe keep the Release notes page, but add links there to Phabricator in the future.
- We should have a release notes page with a nicely-written semi-prose detailed page (like 1.31 is going for);
- We should have a release notes page which is just a basic copy-paste of the version in git with some find/replaces (like 1.27 etc. had); or
- We should have a release notes page which is just a link to the "real" version in Phabricator/git?
- I'm not sure I like any of these proposals, really. A more detailed set of highlights on the main page might be better, with links to the real release notes (in git) sprinkled liberally through it?
Translation memory means that that's not too much work over time. Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 20:24, 12 September 2018 (UTC)However, you invest much more work in translating the stuff in section Upgrade notices for MediaWiki developers, which I don't think is useful to anyone. Everyone who wants to develop in MediaWiki must be able to contribute some basic English to understand the documentation, and it's so much to translate as well, that I don't think it's worth the effort.
- I didn't really "rush" this, I think, I acted according to the feedback I recieved here, at the central coordination page about the work in this project. Moreover, it's easily reversible and a "wiki" is fast by definition.
- I mean: We should habe a release notes page (Which isn't MediaWiki 1.31, but Release notes/1.31!) that's just a basic copy-paste version of the version in git (like Release notes/1.27 and Release notes/1.31), but links the task references as actual working links to Phabricator.
- The result is what you see at Release notes/1.31, which is linked from MediaWiki 1.31, and is basically identical with the removed section. They nearly were duplicates before, and are now entirely. That's why I removed the duplicate content from MediaWiki 1.31, trying to create a "more detailed set of highlights on the main page". I really didn't change that much, just deduplicating the Release notes.
- Translation memory means that that's not too much work over time.
- I don't understand what this means. However I don't think every page here has to be translated, and this is quite much semi-English content (coding jargon, which suffers from translation in most cases anyway) with variable and function names. Furthermore, this is no one-time job, but something you have to do twice a year. I just don't think it's worth it at all. MGChecker (talk) 20:48, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
Breaking translations are not undoable.I didn't really "rush" this, I think, I acted according to the feedback I recieved here, at the central coordination page about the work in this project. Moreover, it's easily reversible and a "wiki" is fast by definition.
- This is a reasonable venue for wider discussion about how well we serve potential MediaWiki sysadmins with content that is half in English-ish code, half in their own language, and I agree it's not great, but one person replying to one specific "let's revert this" isn't great. :-) Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 22:00, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
- Breaking translations are not undoable.
- Just reverting should do the job, I see no reason why this shouldn't work. Both the translations and the translation markers in the old revision aren't deleted.
- I think we have to make a distinction here: There are three kinds of information requiring different levels of MediaWiki software knoeledge:
- New features concern everyone.
- Compatibility and upgrade notices concern sysadmins and developers
- Detailed information about programming interface changes and deprecations concern only MediaWiki developers
- I think there is no need to localize the last points, but this actually doesn't concern sysadmins.
- I would love to hear other opinions as well, however, I can't create them from thin air ;) MGChecker (talk) 23:22, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
- I don't think I understand your proposal, so I can't comment usefully on it (even though you've already rushed to enact it, it seems). When you say
- Your suggestions make sense. Would you like to help to implement them for 1.32 or even 1.31? ☠MarkAHershberger☢(talk)☣ 17:45, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
- Let's leave this open for feedback a few days, but than I would like to move forward with this for MediaWiki 1.31 (won't be much work to do.) French is the only language that did some translations of the part I would like to remove by now.
- I would like to help implement this for 1.32, once the release branch is created and we have got a ~final feature set. MGChecker (talk) 20:43, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
- Release branches are forked about six weeks before the release is made and this is the point that you would have what is considered to be a final feature set.
- Since 1.32 is set for release sometime in November, that means that it will be forked around October 15th. At that point, we should have a clear idea of what the "final" feature set is.
- I'd be happy to help you with this if you want to start on it then. ☠MarkAHershberger☢(talk)☣ 17:36, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
- I just implemented the changes we discussed here for MediaWiki 1.31 and Release notes/1.31.
- Given previous releases, maxbe the release branch will even be created a little earlier, I guess 2-5 weeks from now. I guess Multi-Content Revisions will be one big thing included in this release, even if it will take until 1.33 until we have a real, full release here. MGChecker (talk) 18:30, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
- I do not think blanking https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki_1.31&diff=0&oldid=2839842&diffmode=source is at all appropriate for pages that are already translated. Please revert yourself. Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 18:39, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
- I agree blanking translated sections of pages should be avioded, however I disagree that it should block restructuring pages to a unified concept, especially since translations of this parts of the page aren't that helpful in principle. I wouldn't like people speaking other langiages putting any more effort in translating this.
- Futhermore, it didn't undo that many translation work, the only language that hat large parts of this section translated was Japanese. I think a good compromise to make here would be to leave the MediaWiki 1.31 page as is, while moving the Japanese Release notes to Release notes/1.31/ja (because that's what it actually is), using old-school translation. Improving the mediawiki.org frontpage
[edit]The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
I'd like to discuss potential improvements to https://www.mediawiki.org/ (the front page itself), both regarding content and presentation, as I see several issues with the current page.
I propose to discuss this in several stages:
* Defining audiences,
* defining content per group,
* defining presentation and layout.
My main intention are improvements to allow our audiences to better find the relevant information that they are looking for.
We might not be able to make everything perfect but we can certainly try to make it better?
If this sounds interesting, please take a look at MediaWiki/Homepage improvements 2018
and let's discuss on the corresponding discussion page and work on this? Thank you! AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 22:24, 30 September 2018 (UTC)
- While there has not been a lot of feedback to this posting, most of it was pretty helpful. You can find the results under https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki/Homepage_improvements_2018#Audiences
- The next step is to decide on the content. An initial proposal and explanations of related challenges can be found under https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki/Homepage_improvements_2018#Content
- It's not too different from the current content and tries to use clearer phrasing, avoids some of the current content duplication, removes a smaller number of some currently unhelpful pages and adds better information mostly for sysadmins and people who heard about MediaWiki for the very first time.
- If this sounds interesting, please take a look at the link above and let's please discuss on the corresponding discussion page! Thanks! AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 21:33, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
- Phase 3: Layout:
- Now that the content is defined, the next step for the next two weeks is to sort out the layout. An initial proposal can be found in MediaWiki/Homepage improvements 2018#Layout and layout implementation.
- Please take a look at the link above and let's discuss on Talk:MediaWiki/Homepage improvements 2018. Thanks! AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 23:27, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
- The proposed changes are now live. AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 13:24, 13 April 2019 (UTC)
- Looking good. Thank you AKlapper (WMF)! —Mainframe98 talk 14:48, 13 April 2019 (UTC)

Abusefilter for talk pages
[edit]As part of reducing spam, I've updated filter 12 (see abuse log), which is now doing an excellent job of blocking spammers. But that one has no effect on talk pages (which use flow), so I've created filter 59, which does the same thing for flow pages (or so it should).
However, my filters don't seem to work against talk pages (those which use flow). Can someone figure out what I'm missing? Thanks. Leaderboard (talk) 11:08, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

I was asked by Wikimedia Nederland to write a report about the Techstorm and to add a link to the report page (Wiki Techstorm/Reports). Developer input on topic
[edit]I'd appreciate getting input from developers (especially extension developers) on Talk:Extension default namespaces#h-"Reserving"_blocks_per_extension?-2018-11-21T18:09:00.000Z; I posted it almost two weeks ago, but it's gotten no attention from anyone else yet. In short, it's a proposal to start recommending extension authors reserve blocks of 10 namespace numbers for their extensions (when their extensions add a namespace(s)), since that's what most current extensions seem to have informally done to date. 「ディノ奴千?!」☎ Dinoguy1000 01:09, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

updating SPARQL endpoints to use https where possible

Hi,
I have gone through all SPARQL endpoints listed at Wikidata_Query_Service/User_Manual/SPARQL_Federation_endpoints and tested those using http if they also offer their service on https protocol. Would such change please be permitted?
A few entries have moved to a different URL, which I would also like to change if permitted, thank you. Jonas.smedegaard (talk) 05:02, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
