MediaWiki internal error after Updating from 1.35.2 to 1.40.0

I'm getting the following issue when I try to open my wiki website:

- Sounds a lot like https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T343669 there is a bug if footer icons are disabled in LocalSettings.php. this should be fixed in the next version. In the meantime if you disabled footer icons try not disabling them. Bawolff (talk) 23:44, 1 September 2023 (UTC)
Doesn't load articles on Doro 7060
I was happily using this app on a Nokia 8000 G but hated the phone. Replaced it with a Doro 7060, all latest software. The interface worked down to selecting an article. All articles, and several topics tried led to, "Unable to load article"! It's tricky to chase because the phone is discontinued. But I was wondering if maybe Doro was doing extra security checks such as certificate dates. Me talking to them didn't get me very far, maybe they might be more forthcoming for you? Perhaps you have higher access than customer support? Or maybe this post might ring a bell for you? Derek Lazenby (talk) 11:05, 1 September 2023 (UTC)
- This is a KaiOS phone it seems. are u making use of the browser on this phone to access wikipedia ? (There also used to be an app, but im not sure we still support that app ) —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talk • contribs) 12:36, 2 September 2023 (UTC)
Is my data irrecoverably lost?
I was running mediawiki 1.26, then I tried upgrading to 1.40, but it did not work. So I then tried upgrading it to 1.35, and the wiki was up and running again.
However, I keep getting an error "Revision #0 of page X was not found".
I thought this was a 1.35 bug so I upgraded to 1.40 now. The error is still there when I go into "Edit".
I am able to create new pages, however all my existing pages show the same error.
What I've done:
- Run the update.php multiple times. It says that some fields don't exist, but says 0 things were updated and that I have to force it.
- Run the migrateActors, same result as above.
- I verified that the text and pages are still in the database. However, I do not have a backup of the database from before the 1.35 version.
- I checked that the rev_id corresponds to page_latest, and rev_page corresponds to page_id.
I thought if I could somehow start with a fresh database and only import the text from the pages, as I do not need the old revisions. I just want it to display my pages again.
I hope I won't have to go into the database and manually copy the text into new pages to make it work again. That would only be a last resort.
Can someone help me get my pages to display again please? 72.138.81.98 (talk) 20:30, 1 September 2023 (UTC)
- So is the current DB the 1.40 or the 1.35 one? Personally i often update to 1.32 first. The update process around 1.35 is a mess.
- So first of all, lets figure out where it went wrong.
- Check that either rev_actor field of revision is not 0 or revactor_actor of revision_actor_temp is not 0. If they are 0 then its a problem with actor migration.
- Check rev_comment_id is not 0 or revcomment_comment_id of revision_comment_temp is not 0. If its 0 its a problem with revision comment migration.
- If neither of those, then something else wrong. Bawolff (talk) 23:42, 1 September 2023 (UTC)

Is there a way to configure MediaWiki Search to search all wikimarkup source code in the wiki? For example, strings located in hyperlinks or HTML comments seem to be excluded from MediaWiki Search.

Mass Delet for Spam
Hello,
Unfortunately, my wiki fell victim to spammers. Thousands of pages were created until the database was completely full. Unfortunately, the mass delete extension doesn't help me any further. - Looking at the right hand side, the new text in the page is
[[Category:转移自中文維基百科的作品]]but the diff has an extra space character on either side of the highlighted text:[[Category:转移自 中文維基百科 的作品]]. The same is happening on the left hand side's highlighted text. I'm not pretending to speak Chinese, or whatever this language is - just pointing out the extra spaces, which I don't think I've seen on English wikis. Jonathan3 (talk) 17:55, 3 September 2023 (UTC) - Zh has some segmentation code for diffs that only apply to that language. Maybe there is a bug in it. Bawolff (talk) 19:55, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
- This is the bug that I fixed in https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/mediawiki/core/+/935823 . I was able to reproduce it locally by reverting that change. It doesn't affect Wikimedia websites since we use wikidiff2 which has its own system for Chinese segmentation. The solution is to either apply that patch to your wiki, or wait for MediaWiki 1.41, or install wikidiff2. Tim Starling (talk) 09:35, 5 September 2023 (UTC)

ApprovedRevs not working
Installed “Extension:Approved Revs” to prevent publishing changes to a page until approval. For that, I did the below changes but still I could not see the (approve) link on history page. Also, the changes made on the pages are published directly to all the users. Even users without an account can edit pages.
1. Created a folder “ApprovedRevs” inside extension folder and extracted all files to it from the .zip provided.
2. Executed the DB scripts to create the DB objects in my my_wiki database.
3. Added the below configuration in the LocalSettings PHP file
wfLoadExtension( 'ApprovedRevs' );
Anyone know why it doesn't work?
I've tried a lot but nothing works, basically anything ChatGPT/Google could offer, this is my last resort basically. Thanks in advance Deeperlevelgame (talk) 18:08, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
- Does approvedRevs appear on Special:version?
- Are you currently logged into an account with admin rights? Does the approverevisions right show up under administrator in special:listgrouprights on your wiki? Bawolff (talk) 19:53, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for your input, much appreciated. Here are the answers to the questions:
- Does approvedRevs appear on Special:version?
- --> Yes (1.9)
- Are you currently logged into an account with admin rights?
- --> The problems exist with both admin and non-admin accounts, as well as non-logged-in visitors.
- Does the approverevisions right show up under administrator in special:listgrouprights on your wiki?
- --> Yes, "Set a certain revision of a wiki page as approved (approverevisions)" is under the header "Administrators (sysop) (list of members)".
- if you have any more ideas, they are more than welcome. Kind regards Deeperlevelgame (talk) 19:55, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
- Extension:Moderation
- Just found this glorious extension that so far does exactly what it promises, very happy! Seems like the problem with ApprovedRevs is no longer relevant. Deeperlevelgame (talk) 19:22, 5 September 2023 (UTC)
Unsure How to Upload LocalSettings.php
I'm trying to merge settings I created on my locally hosted MediaWiki file onto a WikiTide site that I have, but I can't find any clear instructions anywhere to do this. The Wiki Family article on here is pretty unclear and confusing to follow, especially for someone not super well-versed in PHP. Can someone point me in the direction of some clear instructions so that they can be added here? RealSwimboy (talk) 02:49, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
- It depends what your hosting provider offers to transfer files from your local machine to that remote hosting machine. There are technologies like SCP, SFTP, etc. (This question is unrelated to MediaWiki itself but about copying files.) Malyacko (talk) 11:37, 5 September 2023 (UTC)
- You might have better luck asking at wikitide support as this seems more a question about their specific setup not mediawiki in general Bawolff (talk) 22:41, 5 September 2023 (UTC)

How to get Jenkins to verify my extensions
Hi! Over the years I developed several extensions. However, I never figured out how can I get Jenkins to check, verify and merge my commits. It's always some other user that configs Jenkins and I never learned how. So currently, my oldest extensions are being checked by Jenkins (example) but my recent ones aren't (example) so that I have to mark my commits as Verified and Merge them myself. Does someone know how to get Jenkins to do it? Thanks! Sophivorus (talk) 20:19, 5 September 2023 (UTC)
- I can never remember either. I usually just find some popular extension, copy the testing related stuff from composer.json, copy the various testing config files in the extension (some of them start with a dot so can be easy to miss), look for a recent commit in integration/config that enables for a new extension (e.g. [3]) and copy that but changing the extension name.
- There are also docs at Continuous integration/Tutorials. The people in the #wikimedia-releng irc channel are also really helpful on this topic Bawolff (talk) 22:36, 5 September 2023 (UTC)

- Can you please provide some details about the software you are using? Especially versions of MediaWiki and PHP would be helpful. Are there any additional extensions installed? Osnard (talk) 07:01, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
- This is a known bug if you use composer after installing. It will be fixed in next version of mediawiki. In the mean time see https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T335073#8862051 for a work around. Bawolff (talk) 19:39, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
Uploaded Files return 404 error even though they are uploading
When I upload a image from the Upload Files section to my mediawiki they return a 404 error but when I go to the uploaded files section I can see the thumbnail and click on the File button and it shows the image. If I click on the file name it return the 404 message.
I think the error has to do with Short Url because if I erase /view/ from the link and add index.php?title= it loads the image.
basically my issue is:
mediawiki thinks the files are located at /view/File:filename.png
but they’re really located at index.php?title=File:filename.png Mediabobedit (talk) 01:06, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

504 error
My mediawiki 1.39 site can't be accessed, 504 error occurs, but other php applications (such as forums) can run normally, they are all in the same server, especially the load.php thing, it appears 504 every time 100% mistake APiggingPig (talk) 11:08, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

- While 504 is a error generated by nginx if the upstream is not responding in time, so if you dont see anything in the error log it probably means that nginx error logging is setup incorrectly.

Wiki root directory
I have my mediawiki files stored in the directory /var/www/website.name/ meaning my homepage looks like example.com/index.php/Main_Page without any /w/ or /wiki/ subdirectory/route
I'm assuming I could simply mv the files to a /w/ subdirectory and adjust the LocalSettings.php if this is unsafe. Do I need to do this, and would that be the proper way of fixing it? Maruhop (talk) 12:38, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
- You might have to also modify web server config (.htaccess) to make the /wiki part work.
- You can do this if you want to. Its really more of a personal preference thing. Some people like /w/ since it leaves room to put other things on the server, but it doesn't really matter.
- There are instructions at manual:short URL Bawolff (talk) 19:35, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
- "I'm assuming I could simply mv the files to a /w/ subdirectory and adjust the LocalSettings.php if this is unsafe."
- Yes I think you could do this (move the files and change the LocalSettings.php settings). I don't know what you mean by unsafe.
- "Do I need to do this"
- I don't think so. Though having it in a separate subdirectory ("w" or "wiki", "html"... it doesn't matter) means you can put other files outside the web directory, and it's all neatly within "/var/www/website.name/".
- P.S. "I have my mediawiki files stored in the directory /var/www/website.name/ meaning my homepage looks like example.com/index.php/Main_Page without any /w/ or /wiki/ subdirectory/route"
- The directory structure is separate to the URL path structure, in that you could keep the files where they are but change the URL (to add "/wiki" or whatever) and you could move the files to a subdirectory but keep the URLs the same.
- There is nothing wrong with the URL structure you have now. I'd say it's far better. Jonathan3 (talk) 22:32, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
Disable Bare External Link
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
I have a named template parameter that contains a url. I'd like to keep how I specify and store this template parameter unmodified. In the template the parameter renders as part of some lines of code my visitors would copy and paste.
Unfortunately due to bare external links, MediaWiki converts the parameter as a clickable link which is causing some issues when users copy and paste the generated computer code.
I see I can avoid auto-linked URLs by using the <nowiki></nowiki> tags, but as it is a template parameter <nowiki>{{{url|}}}</nowiki> will just show me {{{url|}}} instead of a plain text url.
Is there a way I can prevent the bare external link from converting in a way compatible with use inside a template? If not, is there a way I can disable bare external links across the full site, as I have no need for them and could just use external links with specified link text if I need one.
I have ParserFunctions installed and tried: {{#replace:{{{url|}}}|http|<nowiki>http</nowiki>}} but to no avail. 68.230.215.58 (talk) 19:56, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
- If you're sure the url parameter will always be a valid URL (or at least will begin with h) you could try something like this. I've had to add some extra x characters to make it look ok...
- <xxnowiki>h</xxnowiki>{{#sub:{{{url}}}|1}} Jonathan3 (talk) 22:24, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
- Try {{#tag:nowiki|{{{url}}}}} Bawolff (talk) 23:09, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

Contents of dumpBackup.php XML file
If you create a backup using php dumpBackup.php --full --uploads --include-files > dump.xml how would you go about reading through the XML file without importing it into a wiki? For instance, is there any way of browsing what files have been included? Jonathan3 (talk) 09:16, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
- Most text editors can read through it fine. If you open in firefox it will syntaxhighlight and allow you to collapse sections.
- Including uploaded files in dumps have always been a little experimental. Bawolff (talk) 15:49, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

Problem with page previews
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
So, I've checked this on multiple browsers, on two devices, and I'm pretty sure something awful has happened with page previews. There are several pages which, when I hover over their blue links, show a rather gorey photo of what appears to be a lipoma in an opened wound. I noticed this while exploring the numeral systems area of wikipedia, but it may be on other pages as well, for all I know. Pages affected: List of numeral systems, Sign-value notation, Aegean, Chuvash, and many more. I apparently can't upload an image to show what it looks like here, but yikes, it looks terrible. Please fix this! Marcus erronius (talk) 09:33, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
- After looking into it more, it seems that purging the page solves the problem for individual pages, but there are many of them, and I'm not going to be able to do them all. Marcus erronius (talk) 09:45, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
- I'm thinking now that in my haste to report this, I reported in the wrong place. Marcus erronius (talk) 10:19, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

Tag Extions and Templates
I use tag extensions and templates, as mentioned in Project:Support desk/Flow/2023/06#h-Custom_Tag_Extensions_and_Templates-20230628011800. Previously, I was using templates to output one of several different predefined custom tags. I was able to resolve my issue once all my queued jobs had cleared. However, I now have a different issue and that solution no longer works.
On a template page I'm now trying to use custom tags with named parameters. However, only the named output is being passed and not the parameter. For example with <custom src="{{{url|}}}">Example</custom> the $args['src'] is returning with {{{url|}}} instead of http....
My custom tag is established using "ParserFirstCallInit". 70.160.223.43 (talk) 18:13, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
- Use
<custom>param1=value</custom>if it is using template parameters. - There are also methods of parser you can call like $parser->recursiveTagParse() or various preprocessor methods like $frame->expand() to control this on the server side. Bawolff (talk) 00:37, 8 September 2023 (UTC)

- Your php should come with a file named php.ini - you may need to uncomment some lines in order to enable some extensions. You need the php zip extension to install composer.

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Hello all,
I run a wiki for my business, and I've just upgraded from v1.37 to 1.40 via command line tar. I followed the instructions, however, I'm receiving the following error message:
MediaWiki internal error.
Original exception: [ZPoiPwWFzL39lQ0uSUecIwAAAAE] 2023-09-07 19:19:28: Fatal exception of type "Wikimedia\Rdbms\DBQueryError"
Exception caught inside exception handler.
Set $wgShowExceptionDetails = true; at the bottom of LocalSettings.php to show detailed debugging information.
I've added the $wgShowExceptionDetails = true; to the end of my LocalSettings.php file, but it's not showing any traceback. I also tried adding $wgShowDBErrorBacktrace = true; and it did nothing either.
I am in a critical situation and without the possibility of a traceback, it seems my hands are tied. Please help if you can - thank you!
All best,

- If you run the eval.php maintenance script and type in
var_dump($wgShowExceptionDetails);does it say true? - Did update.php run with no errors? Bawolff (talk) 00:30, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you @Bawolff! I am an intermediate programmer but I am no php guy. I just ran eval.php and got this warning, and afterwards tried to enter the var_dump line but nothing happened when I hit enter on the command line.
*******************************************************************************NOTE: Do not run maintenance scripts directly, use maintenance/run.php instead!Running scripts directly has been deprecated in MediaWiki 1.40.It may not work for some (or any) scripts in the future.*******************************************************************************var_dump($wgShowExceptionDetails);- update.php did run with no errors, yes, and I re-ran it several times with some trial and error just to be sure, even using --force to make sure it re-ran.
- Am I entering the var_dump command in the right place?
- Thank you!
- Mark Markgalup (talk) 03:18, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
- umm, hmm. Not sure what is going on with that. You should be able to ignore the warning and you are entering in the correct place. I don't know why nothing would happen. You should get either bool(true) or bool(false).
- Anyways possibilities:
- you have a typo in your line in LocalSettings.php, you edited the wrong file or something of that nature. (I know this sounds like an annoying suggestion but it happens all the time)
- something is overriding the $wgShowExceptionDetails (would be unusual)
- the db query is happening before LocalSettings.php is finished being processed (super unusual but not impossible)
- So you could also try setting $wgDebugLogFile which should also include exceptions (along with a lot of other useless information). You could try disabling all extensions and re-enabling one at a time to see if its a specific extension. You could try enabling mysql query error log which would likely include the problematic query, which would hint where the issue is. Bawolff (talk) 04:33, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you again! Where would I enable mysql query error log?
- I believe I only have one extension enabled, so I'll bypass that and see.
- Thank you!
- Mark 69.225.53.82 (talk) 22:09, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
- Oh, my mistake, mysql doesn't have a feature where you can just log bad queries, you have to log all queries by adding something like the following put in the
[mysqld]section of your mysql config file (often /etc/mysql/my.cnf, but could be in different places on different OS or versions of mysql/mariadb) general-log=1 log-raw=1 general-log-file=/var/log/mysql/general.log
- (I've never actually done this myself). See also https://stackoverflow.com/questions/4631133/mysql-log-of-invalid-queries Bawolff (talk) 02:50, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you @Bawolff! Well, confirming I found the issue - it was an installation that I did not know had been moved to a different directory. All seems fixed now and thank you so much for your kind assistance!
- All best,
- Mark 73.58.238.92 (talk) 16:22, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
What to exclude from public archive of a wiki
If an SQL dump of a wiki were to be publicly archived, what could be excluded to preserve the same amount of user privacy as on the wiki itself? For instance, I'd want to exclude all email addresses and IP addresses. Ideally it would still be possible to recreate a wiki from the dump. Jonathan3 (talk) 22:20, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
- I would probably copy what wikipedia does for dumps. They include some but not all sql tables. You could also look at the toolforge view definitions https://github.com/wikimedia/operations-puppet/blob/production/modules/profile/templates/wmcs/db/wikireplicas/maintain-views.yaml
- generally, the dump xml (+ images and config) is enough to remake the public parts of the wiki. Additional tables like categorylinks are needed to do so quickly because refreshLinks.php is really slow Bawolff (talk) 00:08, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
- "I would probably copy what wikipedia does for dumps. They include some but not all sql tables."
- This sounds like a good idea. I've found some relevant pages. Could you help me find the mysqldump (or equivalent) and dumpBackup.php commands they use on Wikipedia?
- I think for dumps they just do it on a table level, and dump the entire table for tables that are safe.
- The actual script they use is at https://github.com/wikimedia/operations-dumps/tree/master/xmldumps-backup Bawolff (talk) 07:00, 9 September 2023 (UTC)

When i use 'Page information' tab, line 'Page views in the past 30 days' used to be a link to a pop up showing the distribution of views in the past month. This allows me to know whether the translated page has some interest other than mine for translating.But this link now disappeared since some monthes and the graph is no longer viewable. Used code:
<onlyinclude><includeonly>aaa,</includeonly></onlyinclude>
<!--
<onlyinclude><includeonly>bbb.</includeonly></onlyinclude>
-->
:Result: "{{:{{FULLPAGENAME}}}}"
"aaa,"
"aaa,bbb."
???
Should the second, commented out(?), <onlyinclude> part not be skipped/ignored ? MvGulik (talk) 07:18, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
- no, onlyinclude ignores everything outside of that tag when transcluding and are higher in the transclusion priority than comments when parsing. —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talk • contribs) 07:53, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
- Don't really explains why onlyinclude was given a higher transclusion priority than comments when parsed. MvGulik (talk) 08:54, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
- It surprised me too, but I guess it would take ages to parse a whole page for comments before looking at onlyinclude tags.
- Also, for some reason I thought you needed
//-->on multi-line comments... I haven't a clue why I thought that, but it's probably neater without, so thanks for that. Jonathan3 (talk) 20:02, 8 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi, (sorry for this probably very old version, but as I'm not an admin, I can't do anything here) Is it possible to list all entries of one specific user, back to the beginning? I only see a possibility which stops 3 months before (without telling this limit, afaics), example: https://organindex.de/index.php?namespace=0&tagfilter=&username=MartinH&size-mode=min&size=&wpFormIdentifier=newpagesform&title=Spezial%3ANeue+Seiten&limit=1000

If $wgSMTP = false, how and where specifically is mail sent from?
Hello All,
I am trying to figure out where (many years ago) I configured the ability for my mediawiki to send emails from my google business apps email. The issue is that recently my emails are getting blocked from being sent by my hosting due to being unauthenticated with an 550-5.7.26 error. So now I'm trying to resolve and add auth, but I can't find where I even gave credentials beyond my email address to mediawiki.
$wgEmergencyContact
$wgPasswordSender
are both set.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.
All best,

- Maybe search for every occurrence of "mail" or "smtp" in your LocalSettings.php. Jonathan3 (talk) 21:27, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
- So if $wgSMTP is not set, you configure this in your server's MTA config file, which is outside of MediaWiki (Where this file is, depends on which MTA you use. Sometimes you can find this out using the command
sendmail -v) - If $wgSMTP is set, see $wgSMTP Bawolff (talk) 23:37, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
First Page only when logged in vs. Registering new Users
Good morning,
I have set that unregistered users cannot see the content of the wiki.
New users should always be approved by the admin after their own registration.
I installed the ConfirmAccount extension.
Now no one can register at all, because no unregistered user can access a page - a circular argument.
Is there a way to implement both requirements?
Tnx
Sebastian

Wikipedia Donation
I was just trying to figure out what I need to do to have the donation page not pop up anymore, lol. I donated the very first time I saw it, and I do believe I did a recurring donation of $10 a mth. And it verbally states I believe either at the bottom of the blue background request or it was stated after I donated, that once you did, my cookies should have saved it within the archives or files on my tablet for the wiki sites. Could I have messed up my donation somehow? Bc tbh? If it can be messed up, I am FOREVER unknowingly messing ezpz stuff up with a quickness, lolol.
Thank you ahead of time for Any & ALL Help

- Oh, I think I figured it out not long after I messaged 3 mths ago. My problem was that EVERYTIME I would go look something up on Wikipedia I would have the request for donations page, w/a green background. And it stated that once I donated (I opted for $10/per mth) that it wouldn’t pop up all the time. But it unfortunately was still popping up. But, as I stated in the 1st line I believe I figured out how to Not have it popping up all the time. I didn’t know that I was able to login to a Wikipedia/Wikimedia account. So I figured, Well what the hay! I’ll see if it lets me login, & PRESTO! It allowed me to login, which then in turn it stopped the green background requests.
- I also wanted to make sure that I thank you guys at ANY of The Wiki’s because of you guys creating all of the different Wiki’s I can learn about damn close to anything I so choose. I totally wish that Wikipedia was around when I was in school, lol. 😂 I had to do my reports going to Library and praying I was the 1st one there so I could get the necessary encyclopedia volume BEFORE ANYONE ELSE IN MY CLASS could. It kinda reminds me of a type of Library/Encyclopedia THUNDER DOME lol.

Login doesn't work for me?
I installed mediawiki on my local server (as a private wiki) but when I enter the homepage I can't log in. The homepage show me special page on top and then the text "login required: please log in to view other pages", but when I try to click login it doesn't work and I'm stuck at this point. Anyone know how to fix? Wuwwo (talk) 10:25, 11 September 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, please read "Before you post" in the sidebar and provide required information, plus explain what does happen at which stage. "it doesn't work" is generally too vague. Thanks! Malyacko (talk) 15:43, 11 September 2023 (UTC)
- I fixed it! I share the solution so if anyone got the same problem knows what it is. The problem is in the mediawiki configuration, specifically the URL base path to the directory containing the wiki named "$wgScriptPath = /directory-name" doesn't allow certain characters and in particular I had a directory name Encyclopædia, which create a bug because the character æ is not allowed or probably go in conflict. To solve the problem just change the name of the directory, using only common characters and it will works ;) Wuwwo (talk) 16:46, 11 September 2023 (UTC)
- In theory it should work, but its probably important that you are using UTF-8 encoding in both LocalSettings.php and the actual directory name. If you used windows-1252 encoding at some point, bad things will probably happen. Bawolff (talk) 21:26, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

- THANK YOU! You are my hero! I've been struggling with this for 2+ weeks. It's frustrating when you're doing everything self-taught via YouTube, W3 and various other sources.
- Plus, not everything html and css works in mediwiki.
- Again, a huge sincere thank you Bawolff! You made my day! :) 73.168.81.243 (talk) 02:04, 14 September 2023 (UTC)
Getting "⧼No stashed content found for ../.....-....-....-....⧽" when attempting to save my article
Mediawiki 1.40
PHP 8.1
Popup title: "Save your changes"
I tried to refresh the page or choose different options in the popup showing up when hitting "Save changes" button.
If I edit an article and try to save it all on the same day, it works fine. The issue seems to be when I edit an article on a day X, turn my machine off, and on day X+1, I try to save the article with my changes having been automatically recovered: that's where the issue occurs, and I can't save the article in this case. Draikin4321 (talk) 10:49, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
- Please see "Post a new question" in the sidebar and provide full steps to reproduce something, plus the title of some popup. Malyacko (talk) 11:38, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks, I edited my question accordingly. Draikin4321 (talk) 11:07, 13 September 2023 (UTC)
- Well at the very least the i18n for the error message not rendering correctly is a bug Bawolff (talk) 09:29, 14 September 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks, the issue is gone. But so is the changes I wanted to save. Very frustrating. I imagine that the stuff in cache (cookies/localStorage/whatever) was somehow causing the issue and for some reason that cached stuff was flushed. Draikin4321 (talk) 16:05, 15 September 2023 (UTC)

System did not let me in after couple of attempts with my credentials (I maintain and update passwords carefully). Forgotten password sends an email, but no feedback what is wrong at all. Nothing received...
Ok, I ended up creating a new account, but email is not accepted as username despite the FAQ suggests...
Finally, wanted to log in with the fresh credentials, and it is denied due to could not authenticate "intel.com"
Is there anything in my blindspot? Anybody can help? GABORVAX (talk) 15:55, 12 September 2023 (UTC)

Edits not showing up in Recent Changes
As the title says, I cannot see the edits in Recent Changes, even with all filters removed. I can only see the edits when I go to the User Contributions page of the user account or the history of a specific page.
Here is the setup of my wiki:
| Product | Version |
|---|---|
| MediaWiki | 1.39.4 |
| PHP | 7.4.33 (fpm-fcgi) |
| MariaDB | 10.4.20-MariaDB-1:10.4.20+maria~buster-log |
| ICU | 65.1 |
I verified that no filters are applied at the Recent Changes and still nothing shows up, yet I know there are edits that were successfully made (such as here, for example--there are hundreds more made via the API in the last 7 days).
For added context, the Mediawiki instance where this is occurring was recently updated from version 1.35.8. Since that time, it appears that no edits show up on Recent Changes. Lost Student (talk) 20:04, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
- what's your $wgRCMaxAge setting value? you can also try to run Rebuildrecentchanges.php Framawiki (talk) 20:32, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
- I don't have $wgRCMaxAge defined in LocalSettings, so it should be the 90-day default. I did run rebuildrecentchanges.php and now changes before that execution do show up in Recent Changes. Unfortunately, any changes made after that (for example, this one) don't show up. Lost Student (talk) 21:02, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
- I just disabled all extensions and edits are showing up in Recent Changes now as expected. So now begins the task of activating them one by one to figure out which one was causing the problem. I'll report back after I do.

- By the process of elimination, the culprit is...Extension:CheckUser! I even downloaded the latest version just to make sure (although I already had the latest that is compatible with MW 1.39).
- I looked at the Extension Talk Page, and what do you know...I'm not the first to notice this problem! https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Extension%20talk%3ACheckUser/Archive%202/Flow%20export#c-204.237.89.128-20230503232200-Upgrade_from_1.35%E2%86%921.39_isn%27t_creating_cu_changes.cuc_actor%3F. "Revision IDs returned by the server do not match" error when attempting to edit my article
Mediawiki 1.40
PHP 8.1
When hitting any "Edit" link on a particular article of my wiki, I get a title-less popup that states:
"Revision IDs returned by the server do not match (document: 60, metadata: 61)."
Refreshing the page doesn't help. Only that article has this problem.
Any idea? Draikin4321 (talk) 12:04, 13 September 2023 (UTC)
- Does this happen with both visual editor and the source editor? Bawolff (talk) 21:35, 13 September 2023 (UTC)
- Visual. But I tried again today and the problem is gonna. Really strange because it was very persisting until today. Anyway, thanks. Draikin4321 (talk) 14:51, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
session data missing - causing user edits to fail
getting a 'cache data missing' message when attempting to upload an edit to a web page.

- What's the exact error message? Is this for your own website or a public website.
- Sometimes this can be caused by $wgSessionCacheType being misconfigured. You can try setting it to CACHE_DB and seeing if that helps. Bawolff (talk) 09:27, 14 September 2023 (UTC)
- My $wgSessionCacheType is already set at CACHE_DB

Mint: where do we report erroneous or too bad translations ?

When translating for example ->

MediaWiki 1.37.2 runs into database query issues
Hello,
since today my rather old MediaWiki 1.37.2 instance (projektarbeitenergie.valo139.net) runs into a problem. It has often an unknown database error. The weird part is that the instance will run again as soon as I restart MariaDB. More weirdly after that it only works for roughly 1 - 2 hours and will run into the issue once again. Furthermore, it can be bricked immediatley by trying to edit any page.
Here the debug text:
MediaWiki internal error.
Original exception: [ffebfc80a25751bc95eb58ab] /index.php/Hauptseite Wikimedia\Rdbms\DBQueryError: A database query error has occurred. Did you forget to run your application's database schema updater after upgrading or after adding a new extension?

I haven't updated MediaWiki nor the database setup.
Does someone have an idea to fix the issue? I personnaly think it's a bug.
Thank you very much. Valo139 (talk) 16:26, 14 September 2023 (UTC)
- Google suggests this error means the db table is corrupted. I would suggest taking a backup of the database with mysqldump, and reimporting the database.
- You might be able to get better advice for this issue on a mariadb specific forum. Bawolff (talk) 08:17, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
"Help" NS pages de-indexed by Google?
Multiple mediawiki.org "Help" namespace pages have suddenly dropped out of Google Search. I don't see a __NOINDEX__ on such pages (e.g., Help:Magic Words, Help:Templates etc.). I see nothing in the robots.txt at a glace that would cause this.
Prior, whenever I typed "mediawiki" and "magic words", or "mediawiki" and "templates" the "Help" namespace pages was always displayed first (or at least on the first page of results). Now, the "Manual" namespace page shows up instead, or Wikipedia and other sites, despite different browser/users.
These are some pretty high-use, and high-need pages. I've bookmarked so I don't have to do a two step search process... but thought I better mention, as other users might be having problems finding the right help pages?!
Is the de-indexing of some mediawiki.org "Help" namespaces intended? FrozenPlum (talk) 18:11, 14 September 2023 (UTC)
- It’s there, but it seems, that Google has somewhere found a link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/mw:Help:Magic_words and decided that a redirect from Wikipedia is more important than the point where it redirects to and merged these two. sigh.. google works in weird way. —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talk • contribs) 09:59, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
change the folder name from mediawiki 14.0.0 to wiki
hi there, i'm very new to wikimedia and I got it installed on my domain etc.
but to access it from the website it now has to go to domain/wikimedia 14.0.0 and i'd much prefer it if could just change to something neutral like "wiki"
i can't see how to do this short of reinstalling it. any advice would be appreciated 67.71.21.111 (talk) 19:01, 14 September 2023 (UTC)
- You might want to carefully re-read the MediaWiki installation page. In particular, this FTP client/FileZilla section (where it says "Rename the uploaded folder to whatever you would like to have in the URL...) and it's subsequent (important) note(s):
- Manual:Installing MediaWiki#Upload files to your web server (read carefully, "w" is recommended for folder name for a reason, like using Short URLs, which allow "wiki" to be seen on page view, but is not the actual folder name.
- Also, if changing folder name after the fact, instead of during the install as usual, then the old $wgScriptPath value in LocalSettings.php set on install may need to be adjusted to match the new folder name. Hope that helps! FrozenPlum (talk) 19:33, 14 September 2023 (UTC)
- You can rename the folder it is in (if accessing via ssh use the mv command) just be sure to adjust $wgScriptPath (and $wgArticlePath if set) like frozenplum said. Bawolff (talk) 08:09, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
MWException: CAS update failed on user_touched.
We recently upgraded to MW 1.39.4 from 1.35.10. We had no issues from about two weeks, but now one user is seeing the following error:
MWException: CAS update failed on user_touched. The version of the user to be saved is older than the current version.
The user_touched field in the DB is populated for this user. During troubleshooting I have updated it to dates in the past and future as well as setting it to a blank value, but nothing has changed.
We have SemanticMediaWiki installed as well as several other extensions. I have ran maintenance scripts like rebuildData.php in SMW and rebuildall.php in MW.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what we can troubleshoot next? Molsen7970 (talk) 19:21, 14 September 2023 (UTC)
- Can you try just clearing your caches (if your wgMainCacheType is CACHE_DB truncate objectcache table. If CACHE_ACCEL stop and start your webserver, if memcache stop and restart memcache) and see if that helps? Bawolff (talk) 08:12, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for the reply! Our cache setting is:
- $wgMainCacheType = CACHE_NONE;
- I tried adding the user to new groups in the UI. No issues, but I still see the old value in the user_touched field:
- 20230824183907
- I was expecting this field to update since I changed her group membership. Is that not the case? Molsen7970 (talk) 15:17, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
- I haven't been able to figure out the root cause of this, but if anyone else has the same issue I was able restore access to users by using the UserMerge extension. - This is likely caused by an extension trying to access the user's preferences before initialization (which it shouldn't do). You would probably have to disable each extension one by one to see which is responsible.
- Its not clear if this is related to your other issue. Its possible. Bawolff (talk) 21:13, 21 September 2023 (UTC)

How can one remove the annoying line under every <h2> header?

Extension:PluggableAuth plus _authentication_ for e-mail-addresses at an e-mail domain
I successfully use E:PluggableAuth and E:OpenID_Connect for auto-account-creation respectively login to my newest Mediawiki 1.40 for users authenticating against/with their accounts on a certain "Slack" server.
I wish to _add_ the possibility for new users that they can create a new account when they have an e-mail-address at a certain domain, let's say givenname.familyname@trusted-domain.org (givenname.familyname then taken as username and parsed into realname).
The E:Email_Authorization is apparently not want I need.
Has someone of you knowledge of code (a further _authentication_ plugin for PluggableAuth) which can be used for that szenario?
It's quite important for a bigger NGO in Berlin for which I run the new wiki, any help is appreciated. Wikinaut (talk) 20:18, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
- So those trusted-domain.org accounts would be local ones? There would not be a identity provider for them? Osnard (talk) 06:02, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
- The "trusted-domain.org" is a different domain than the MediaWiki server. Wikinaut (talk) 22:14, 24 September 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, but will they be handled by a remote authentication provider?
- As I understand this you have two sources for authentication:
- Remote Slack server: User clicks on "Log in with Slack", provided by Extension:OpenIDConnect and get redirected to Slack for login
- Local accounts: User can use "register" link. But they should only be allowed to register if the mail they provide is "@trusted-domain.org"
- Or is option #2 also a remote authentication provider (OIDC, SAML, ...) on trusted-domain.org and you just need another button "Log in with trusted-domain.org"? Osnard (talk) 08:29, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, your description "As I understand..." is correct, this is, what I need. I think, there may be even more users who may need this.
- The plugin Extension:Email Authorization is apparently, as far as I understand, _not_ applicable for my/the mentioned case, because we talk about authentication (am I right?).
- PS
- Dear Osnard, if you think, that the title of my support question needs a correction to make it clear, please feel free to modify it, I appreciate clarity very much.
- PPS
- In the meantime (since I filed) I found a few support tickets *) here dealing with similar cases, but not a clean extension (yet). If you (can) give me a starting point, I could develop/co-develop and document such a new extension, if you like that, but would need a working starting point. (In former times, I co-authored and maintained a while the Extension:OpenID, but many things have changed since then).
- *) Project:Support desk/Flow/2013/09#h-Allow_account_creation_only_from_specific_email_domains.-2013-09-22T18:19:00.000Z Allow account creation only from specific email domains.

- It is not clear to me
- how _two_ alternative authentication methods could be combined,
- in my example
- i) OpenID Connect -users with a certain (fixed) slack account-
- (this work fine)
- OR
- ii) users (createaccount-right) but only with e-mail address of a certain (fixed) domain.
- Perhaps you can help. Wikinaut (talk) 19:13, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
- For the "OpenID Connect" I believe the PluggableAuth setup you did is just fine. You need to set
$wgPluggableAuth_EnableLocalLogin=true; - To limit registration of users to a certain domain, you will probably need to implement and wire your own "PreAuthenticationProvider". It should be fairly easy to do this. You need to implement a subclass of
AbstractPreAuthenticationProviderand implement thetestForAccountCreationmethod. See https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/g/mediawiki/extensions/MinimumNameLength/+/e4f66417144991b3d2a80c8247ef50931b2f24c9/includes/auth/MinimumNameLengthPreAuthenticationProvider.php from Extension:Minimum Name Length as an example, or find more examples here: https://codesearch.wmcloud.org/things/?q=AbstractPreAuthenticationProvider Osnard (talk) 11:22, 9 October 2023 (UTC) - I already have set
$wgPluggableAuth_EnableLocalLogin=true; - This allows users - who have previously set up their account via OIDC - to set up an additional password to their account, so that they can then login either by OIDC or password-based, which is very comfortable.
- I "just" need to add, as you suggested the testForAccountCreation method. I will check this. If I find a nice solution, I will publish this to give some value and experiences back to the community. Wikinaut (talk) 11:48, 9 October 2023 (UTC)
Trouble with removing tabs for anonymous users
I used method for removing discussion tab from Main Page successfully since 1.26. Described in Manual:Remove Tabs#Remove Tabs from Specific Pages as well: insert a line into MediaWiki:Common.css body.page-Main_Page #ca-talk { display: none !important; }. Works both for logged in and anonymous users, no issue.
Needed to remove the discussion tab for a page in a different namespace, used the same method, inserted a line into MediaWiki:Common.css body.page-Namespace_Page_name #ca-talk { display: none !important; }. Suddenly there is an issue, it works for logged in users only, the tab is shown to anonymous users. The tab should not have been visible to any type of user with this setting, regardless whether logged in or not. Tested under php 7.4.33, 8.1.23, MW 1.39.4, Vector skin. Pspviwki (talk) 11:51, 17 September 2023 (UTC)
- Maybe a cache issue, although it would kind of be weird as common.css is controlled by RL and should only be cached for 5 minutes at most.
- If your site is public it would be helpful to have a link. Bawolff (talk) 00:21, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
- I would agree cache would not be the cause as these pages are purposefully excluded from being cached. https://www.violinwiki.org/wiki/Main_Page - works https://www.violinwiki.org/wiki/Violinwiki:Newsletter_Registration - page in different namespace, does not work. Thanks for help. Pspviwki (talk) 18:19, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
- There are lots of types of potential caches. Bawolff (talk) 20:55, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
- Extremely weird but it was likely cache issue. After restarting server processes, problem is gone, issue closed. Pspviwki (talk) 11:01, 19 September 2023 (UTC)
Remove or Update Default Meta Value
I'm attempting creating my own skin but I've noticed it doesn't allow access to the HTML's head.
I'm trying to use a specific meta viewport value and I saw though previous support desk posts I can add a metatag like this:
function onOutputPageParserOutput(OutputPage &$out, ParserOutput $parseroutput){
$out->addMeta('viewport', '...');
return true;}
$wgHooks['OutputPageParserOutput'][] = 'onOutputPageParserOutput';
Unfortunately MediaWiki already comes with a meta viewport value and the code above only adds a second tag, which doesn't accomplish what I'm trying to do.
Is there a way to remove or update this default meta value? 70.160.223.43 (talk) 00:21, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
- "a specific meta viewport value" can you just state, which ? —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talk • contribs) 10:05, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
- I was hesitant because I didn't want any feedback I got being focused on why it's such a bad idea to have a certain value or why leaving it the default was so much better. Having said that, I'm trying to set it to
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1, maximum-scale=1, user-scalable=0" />70.160.223.43 (talk) 11:29, 18 September 2023 (UTC) - viewport is determined by the skin indicating if it is responsive or not. If you inherit from skin.php and construct your skin with the responsive=true option, it will set device-width. See https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/g/mediawiki/core/+/f368d9d91f92b4ace98966af55b131b8fa8a9a62/includes/skins/Skin.php#373
- If you want to further manipulate them, you'll have to have your skin extension hook into Manual:Hooks/OutputPageAfterGetHeadLinksArray and manipulate the generated tags. —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talk • contribs) 08:40, 19 September 2023 (UTC)
- Hi,
- Creating your own skin for a web application or website typically involves customizing the CSS and JavaScript to change the appearance and behavior of the user interface. However, if the platform or system you're working with doesn't allow direct access to the HTML
<head>section, you may have limited control over adding or modifying meta tags. AmadoOdgers (talk) 09:13, 19 September 2023 (UTC) - Thank you, that was exactly what I needed! 70.160.223.43 (talk) 10:18, 19 September 2023 (UTC)

Reference using letters
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
We want to use letters for numbered lists so I've added to MediaWiki:Common.css,
ol {
list-style-type: lower-alpha;
}
which works great. However, now the list of references from <ref> is lettered, but there's still a superscripted number for the reference in the text, not a letter. How can I have the # list items be lettered but the references list be numbered?
MW 1.39.1 Blgolden (talk) 17:05, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
- I found the fix. Add the following to MediaWiki:Common.css,
- ol.references { list-style-type: decimal; } Blgolden (talk) 17:57, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
New Skin but Default Style
I'm creating a new skin. I have a barebones skin.mustache file and an empty skin.less and skin.js file. I don't have a css page in the wiki corresponding to the skin name, and I don't have anything in MediaWiki:Common.css or my user's css file. However, I'm getting some default css styling, like <h1> is being underlined.
Looking at the load.php css file, it's a big long page starting with #mw-indicator-mw-helplink a{...}. Where is all this coming from, and is there a way I can disable it so my new skin starts as barebones as I can get it? 70.160.223.43 (talk) 23:04, 18 September 2023 (UTC)

- You didn't include what you tried.
- If you want an image on a wiki page (I assume you mean that and not adjusting the wiki's logo) to stay fixed in a wikipage when scrolling, you need to use either position:fixed or position:sticky (Normally you would place the image inside a div, and apply a style attribute to the div). position:fixed puts it in one particular spot on the screen, where position:sticky, makes it stay somewhere while scrolling past until you are at the end of the part it is attached to.
- Doing this in a way that can look good can be challenging. See https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/position for more information on how that works.
- If you want a background image to say fixed while you scroll over it, see https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/background-attachment Bawolff (talk) 10:53, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
Visual Editor Breaks Category Links
Having an issue with the Visual Editor. Every time I edit a page in the VE, the category links are changed from [[Category:Name]] to [[Index.php?title=Category:Name]]. When the VE is saved, this breaks the category links. This does NOT happen with the source editor. I've looked high and low for an answer and can't find anything. The categoroy Länder works fine. https://dronespots.info/Kategorie:L%C3%A4nder But in this category, I have all subpages: https://dronespots.info/Kategorie:Drohnen Which cause in the end, that I have multiple entries with semantic search: https://dronespots.info/DJI
I really lost and can't find the reason, why it doesn't work equally.
Thanks for help. Ordovicium (talk) 13:49, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
- Found the error. I hade on a template [[Category:Drohnen]]
- and replaced with [[Category:Drohnen{{#translation:}}]]. Now it works. Ordovicium (talk) 20:35, 25 September 2023 (UTC)

- If all scripts fail with "Invalid credentials", I guess either username or password specified in the domain-config (or both) are wrong.
- Can you confirm binding with those credentials work? E.g. by using a CLI tool like
ldapsearch? Osnard (talk) 11:07, 9 October 2023 (UTC) - Yes! I could fetch the ldapseach, and finally we connected to the LDAP server after changing LDAP creds, Now it's working fine and all below scripts are executed as expected. Please guide further to establish SSO.
- php extensions/LDAPProvider/maintenance/ShowUserInfo.php --domain xxxxxx.net --username xyxxv

- Is you want to have an actual SSO (=implicit login without need to enter username and password into the MediaWiki login form), you will need to set up Kerberos / GSS API based authentication in the webserver and enable Extension:Auth remoteuser. See LDAP hub for a general overview and Extension:Auth_remoteuser#Configuring_different_remote_sources for more detailed information Osnard (talk) 13:52, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
- Actually we want to have form-based authentication where user credentials are managed within LDAP/Kerberos auth and the same auth setup we already possess in our RHEL7 server env for earlier wiki 1.35.3 SanjayKSahu (talk) 08:25, 13 October 2023 (UTC)
- IF you want to have FBA then you don't need Extension:Auth_remoteuser or any special Webserver setup. You current configuration should then be sufficient. Osnard (talk) 10:02, 16 October 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, earlier we use LDAPAuthentication that helped users authenticated from AD via LDAP and established SSO with the spn/kerberos setups.
- For wiki1.39.4 with following extension configuration, now we are only able login wiki manually interacting LDAP/AD via wiki Login Page. Still SSO is not working for the config with below extensions.
- wfLoadExtension( 'LDAPProvider' );
- wfLoadExtension( 'PluggableAuth' );
- wfLoadExtension( 'LDAPAuthentication2' );
- #wfLoadExtension( 'LDAPAuthorization' ); SanjayKSahu (talk) 14:04, 16 October 2023 (UTC)
Links between language versions
wikipedia is an incredible tool for serious translation. Unlike dictionaries, Wikipedia lets us check that the current word is indeed being used to refer to the concept we are interested in. We can then with confidence switch to the same-concept page in a different language version to see its name in that language.
When I consult an article in Swedish wikipedia, the sidebar shows me a list of all the wikipedia language versions which include an article on just that concept.
However, English-language Wikipedia does not include this feature, disenabling its use as a concept-confirming translation tool.
This is a great loss for Wikipedia users across the whole world, and also contributes to maintaining the exceptionally low international awareness of English-speaking Americans.
Please add this feature to the English-language version! The rest of the world needs it, and you need the rest of the world!

Connection between two templates
Hello. "Template search: Find the template you want to insert by searching for an identifying keyword. Templates that have descriptions are more likely to work well with the visual editor". But I would like to make the connection between two templates automatic, in particular between en:Template:Party color and de:Vorlage:Parteifarbe. There is an item in Wikidata. Only the name of the template must be translated:
{{Party color > {{Parteifarbe
These templates have the same structure. Thanks. Zukunft99 (talk) 00:25, 24 September 2023 (UTC)
Can't POST to the API using fetch
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Hi! I'm developing a Chrome extension that interacts with MediaWiki's API. In that context, I can't use jQuery, much less mw.Api or mw.ForeignApi, I have to use JavaScript's fetch.
My exact query is rather complicated, but I've simplified it to the following. Why does the following POST request using jQuery return a VALID JSON response (though with an error, I know):
$.post( 'https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php', {
'action': 'edit',
'format': 'json'
} ).then( console.log );
While the following equivalent (?) fetch request does not?
fetch( 'https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php', {
method: 'POST',
body: JSON.stringify( {
action: 'edit',
format: 'json'
} ),
} ).then( response => response.json() ).then( console.log );
I tried many variations, but no matter what I do, it looks like the payload (the data in the 'body') doesn't go through, and as a consequence MediaWiki returns the HTML of the API homepage.
I've been racking my brain with this for hours now. Any solution, insight or idea would be most welcome. Thanks!! Sophivorus (talk) 05:05, 24 September 2023 (UTC)
- The answer is Content Type. Your example just sends json as an encoded text string, but you should be setting the content type as well (as lots of servers ONLY support json these days, it seems many example skip this, but MediaWiki supports multiple formats, so you need to tell it what type of data you are sending). Formdata however encodes the parameters as a form AND sets the content-type of the request to formdata (Which MediaWiki also happens to support).
- —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talk • contribs) 11:25, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
fetch( 'https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php', { method: 'POST', headers: { 'Accept': 'application/json', 'Content-Type': 'application/json' }, body: JSON.stringify( { action: 'edit', format: 'json' } ) } ).then( response => response.json() ).then( console.log );
- Hi! Your answer makes sense in theory, but if you test your code, you'll verify it won't work. See https://stackoverflow.com/questions/77165929/cant-post-using-fetch for a working answer. You basically need to use FormData instead of JSON, like so:
var formData = new FormData(); formData.append( 'action', 'edit' ); formData.append( 'format', 'json' ); fetch( 'https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php', { method: 'POST', body: formData } ).then( response => response.json() ).then( console.log );
- Ironically, adding Content-Type will make it fail. This seems more like PHP bug rather than MediaWiki's. Sophivorus (talk) 12:52, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
V1.35 MediaWiki Visual Editor not working.
Hello good afternoon.
Im opening this ticket because Im enabling the V1.35 Visual Editor extension in a v1.35 MediaWiki and this is not working.
After editing the LocalSettings.php to add wfLoadExtension( 'VisualEditor' );
I refresh the web and this goes to black, the packet that im using is this one "https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:ExtensionDistributor?extdistname=VisualEditor&extdistversion=REL1_35"
I already activated the CreatePageUw Extension and this charges well.
Attaching the tail of localSettings.php
# Path to the GNU diff3 utility. Used for conflict resolution.
$wgDiff3 = "/usr/bin/diff3";
## Default skin: you can change the default skin. Use the internal symbolic
## names, ie 'vector', 'monobook':
$wgDefaultSkin = "vector";
# Enabled skins.
# The following skins were automatically enabled:
wfLoadSkin( 'MonoBook' );
wfLoadSkin( 'Timeless' );
wfLoadSkin( 'Vector' );
# End of automatically generated settings.
# Add more configuration options below.
# VisualEditor
#wfLoadExtension( 'VisualEditor' );
#
#Create page
wfLoadExtension( 'CreatePageUw' );
Right now the VisualEditor load extension is commented and the CreatePageUw is working well but if i uncomment the VisualEditor Extension the web does not work.
Do you have any idea where can the error be? This is weird because then other extension is working well.
Thank you in advance,
Best regards. Emartinezhernandez (talk) 15:36, 25 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi, I'm a member of a wiki that doesn't recognize settings in the User:X/commons.css page, but does recognize common.css general settings and common.js personal settings, and I'm guessing it's a server problem. what can be done? Thank you! Neriah (talk) 17:03, 26 September 2023 (UTC)
- Is this about a Wikimedia wiki or not? If yes, what is the wiki. If no, there's nothing you can do actually except to ask the server admin to consider enabling Manual:$wgAllowUserCss – Ammarpad (talk) 19:34, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

Why Email Not Sending
Hello, I installed Mediawiki and my issue is i am not getting any emails when registering new users, or reset password, or even when confirming Admin Email. Mediawiki version i am using is 1.40 and i have setup $wgEnableEmail = true;

$wgPasswordSender = "name@mydomain.com";. Moreover, I tired using STMP and yet no results? is there a solution for this? FrankKufer (talk) 20:44, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

Wikifarm shared media thumbnails not working
Hi,
currently I am setting up a Wikifarm with following components:
de.mywiki.com -> german version
en.mywiki.com -> english version
data.mywiki.com -> shared "commons" for all wikis
The setup of the wikis itselfs is already working like the interwiki and the media.
But if I want to use the images of data.mywiki.com on for example en.mywiki.com the thumbnail is not loading with the error: Error creating thumbnail: File missing
I already triple checked the FAQ and instructions to set up a Mediawiki Family and tested all of the recommended solutions, but nothing of them are working.
The strange thing about it is that the images are available on the de.mywiki.com but not the thumbnail.
I am very sure that I was misconfiguring something, but I cant find what. So is there any simple solution or is this more complex?
Here are the links to the wikis and the example images

Making a generic task a bug report in Phabricator
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
A bit of a meta question, but I accidentally made an issue (T347532) a generic task instead of a bug report. Does that matter? Is there any way to add the bug report "tag" now? I can't seem to figure that out. Thanks Brycehughes (talk) 22:58, 27 September 2023 (UTC)

- Phabricator questions are best asked on Talk:Phabricator/Help as this support desk is for MediaWiki. Answer here is changing the subtype of a task via the "Add Action" dropdown. It does not really matter a lot though, it's not extremely consistently used. :) Malyacko (talk) 16:22, 28 September 2023 (UTC)

How to include port specification in wgServer?
I added the port manually to LocalSettings.php wgServer assignment, but I would rather simply propagate the existing port being used (:4443) rather than explicitly putting that port value into LocalSettings.php. FWIW, when I run index.php, the port portion of the URL used to launch index.php is discarded, and index.php relocates to the final displayed starting page without preserving the explicit inbound port specification. Propagating non-default port assignments is fairly common, works as expected for other web tools on my server (gitweb, subversion, custom software, ...) but not mediawiki accessed through index.php URL. What is best practice for propagating non-default (http/https) ports? 173.239.224.19 (talk) 11:05, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
- Version 1.35.11
- PHP 7.4.33
- MariaDB 15.1 173.239.224.44 (talk) 11:11, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
- After a little tinkering, I found a workaround that does not involve adding a static port assignment to LocalSettings.php.
- If I redirect to website.org:4443/wiki/index.php/Main_Page instead of website.org:4443/wiki/index.php, the non-default port assignment is propagated properly, and continues to be propagated properly as I navigate wiki pages.
- In the past, I redirected to website.org:4443/wiki/index.php and was then automatically redirected to website.org/wiki/Main_Page without propagating the non-default port, and consequently received a 404 error due to accessing through the default https port (443).
- A workaround is good enough for me, but the behavior still seems odd, may be worth looking at. I tried to trivially add in $_SERVER['SERVER_PORT'], but that value was undefined and hence the original problem. Not sure why it behaved that way, I was trying to avoid tinkering in mediawiki's configuration files to avoid future upgrade complexities, but I suspect I was simply overlooking something while purposefully attempting to avoid looking too hard. 136.49.117.30 (talk) 15:13, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
- P.S. "automatically redirected to website.org/wiki/Main_Page" should read ".../wiki/index.php/Main_Page" 136.49.117.30 (talk) 15:17, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
- My prior workaround was incomplete, internal wiki page hyperlinks that referenced SERVER (i.e. wgServer) did not include the port. I added the following if statement just after the wgServer assignment in LocalSettings.php, and everything is working now
- $wgServer = "$_SERVER[REQUEST_SCHEME]://$_SERVER[SERVER_NAME]";
- if ( isset( $_SERVER['SERVER_PORT'] ) ) {
- $wgServer .= ":$_SERVER[SERVER_PORT]" ;
- } 173.239.224.28 (talk) 21:54, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
- Note: the reason we don't do this is because it can lead to cache poisioning attacks in certain configurations.
- You can also try
$wgServer = WebRequest::detectServer();not sure if that still works on modern mediawiki. Bawolff (talk) 11:20, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

- what skin are you using, have you check that the file is actually located inside resources/assets/, can you view it there ? Have you fully read Manual:$wgLogos ? —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talk • contribs) 11:46, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
- default skin
- I checked the file it is inside
- ./images/thumb/archive/8/83/20230807184547!IMG_0005.JPG/93px-IMG_0005.JPG
- So I modified accordingly
- '1x' => "$wgResourceBasePath/images/thumb/archive/8/83/20230807184547!IMG_0005.JPG/93px-IMG_0005.JPG",
- 'icon' => "$wgResourceBasePath/images/thumb/archive/8/83/20230807184547!IMG_0005.JPG/93px-IMG_0005.JPG"
- Then icon appears. 2405:201:D005:CAD8:DE:21F:509B:4CF0 (talk) 16:22, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
Hey, what's going on?
I'm new around here. Honestly just an upcoming musician trying to figure out how I relate to the Wiki's. On my userpage I'm given the notice:
You do not have permission to edit this page, for the following reason:
⧼titleblacklist-forbidden-anonymoususerpage⧽
If anyone could lend a hand it would be appreciated. Navigating this place on my own has proven to be a daunting task :) TrippleIn (talk) 13:03, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

Temporary accounts for unregistered editors
Read this in your language • Please help translate to your language • Please tell other users about these changes

In 2024, editors who have not registered an account will automatically begin using temporary accounts. These editors are sometimes called "IP editors" because the IP address is displayed in the page history.
The Trust and Safety Product team gave a presentation at Wikimania about this change. You can watch it on YouTube.
There is more information at m:IP Editing: Privacy Enhancement and Abuse Mitigation.

spamming
Someone is spamming me deliberately and has locked the page, how can this be fixed? 67.83.34.193 (talk) 20:13, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
- there is not enough info here (what page? Who are you? What website?) to say anything.
- However it is probably an off topic question. Bawolff (talk) 01:13, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
