Are there any possibility to generate numbers in mediawiki, for example from 1 to 50? I make some navigation and would like to make links automaticali like: Book 1 | Book 2 | .... Book 50
So manualy it takes time, so are there any tool to make it automatically? Fokebox (talk) 17:34, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
- With Lua you can create loops to increment a number and output links or text using those numbers. See Extension:Scribunto/Lua reference manual Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 09:29, 2 October 2017 (UTC)

Cite link doesn't show up in WikiEditor
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
I just installed Mediawiki for a group I'm a member of - http://wiki.vvfh.org/
Special Version shows that the Cite extension if installed.
Here's my system details:
| Product | Version |
|---|---|
| MediaWiki | 1.29.1 |
| PHP | 7.1.9 (apache2handler) |
| MySQL | 5.6.36 |
| ICU | 59.1 |
I've read through the docs and installed what I believe are the necessary extensions, templates, scripts and configuration settings. When I run update.php, I don't get any errors. Everything appears to be working except for two things. The Cancel button returns a 404 (so I disabled that for the time being), and I still don't have a Cite link in the WikEditor toolbar.
I have no idea what to do next. I've tested Cite (using the ref tags, and it works as expected. I just can't seem to get that darn link on the toolbar that calls the templates for the various types of cites (web, news, book, and journal).
I would appreciate any help. Links to tutorials, videos, whatever, that would help me resolve this problem. Txantimedia (talk) 00:02, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
- You may be missing RefToolbar/2.0. See w:Wikipedia:RefToolbar/2.0#Porting_to_another_wiki. AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 08:00, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
- I have the following in my Mediawiki:Gadgets-defintions file:
- refToolbar[ResourceLoader|default|dependencies=user.options,mediawiki.util,mediawiki.legacy.wikibits]|refToolbar.js
- refToolbar[ResourceLoader|default|dependencies=user.options,mediawiki.legacy.wikibits]|refToolbar.js
- refToolbarBase[ResourceLoader|hidden]|refToolbarBase.js
- I have the MediaWiki:Gadget-refToolbar.js and MediaWiki:Gadget-refToolbar installed.
- I don't know if this is related, but when I search for MediaWiki:Gadget-refToolbar on my wiki, and then click on the reftoolbar link, I get this error at the top of the screen:
- **munged**wiki.vvfh.org/extensions/EmbedVideo/classes/media/AudioTransformOutput.php on line 75 Notice: Undefined index: descriptionUrl in **munged**wiki.vvfh.org/extensions/EmbedVideo/classes/media/AudioTransformOutput.php on line 85 Notice: Undefined index: descriptionUrl in **munged**wiki.vvfh.org/extensions/EmbedVideo/classes/media/AudioTransformOutput.php on line 85
- That's the first time I've seen that, and the EmbedVideo extension seems to be working normally. However, the video on the RefToolbar page errors out, so there may be some kind of interaction problem there. I doubt it's related to RefToolbar though.
- You're welcome to visit the site and see if I have the requisite scripts, templates, and definitions. Txantimedia (talk) 16:31, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
- Can nobody help me with this? I really need this to be working. Txantimedia (talk) 16:28, 3 October 2017 (UTC)
- I thought this issue was resolved too.
- "... when I search for MediaWiki:Gadget-refToolbar on my wiki, and then click on the reftoolbar link..." - Which "reftoolbar" link are you referring to?
- If it is MediaWiki:RefToolbar, then I don't see such an error. I assumed you had turned Off display of errors on Wiki pages. Additionally, the MediaWiki namespace shouldn't be used to host content or Wiki help information (as you are doing on the MediaWiki:RefToolbar page), do this on Project or Help namespaces. MediaWiki namespace is used for site interface customizations.
- "... the video on the RefToolbar page..." - Which video?
- Has the original issue of "Cite link doesn't show up in WikiEditor" been resolved? AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 17:30, 3 October 2017 (UTC)
- The MediaWiki:Gadget-refToolbar I referred to can be seen here: http://wiki.vvfh.org/index.php/MediaWiki:Gadget-refToolbar
- There is a link, reftoolbar, on that page. When you click on that, it takes you to the MediaWiki:RefToolbar page that you linked to. The reason you don't see an error now, is because I removed the video which was causing the error.
- How do I turn on display of errors? I am a total newbie at MediaWiki, and there's a lot I still don't know.
- I don't understand what namespaces are.
- The video is RefTools.ogv.
- No, the issue has not been resolved. I still don't have a Cite link in the WikiEditor. I've traced and retraced my steps, made sure I did everything according to the instructions, but it still doesn't work. From my reading, it appears that the Cite link should "just work" in MediaWiki 1.29, which is what I'm running.
- I'm so confused now, I'm about to give up.
- I've been trying to figure out how the Parsoid service gets installed on FreeBSD, so I can install VisualEditor, but it's not a port, so I'm not sure what to do.
- MediaWiki is a great piece of software, but the instructions are written for programmers. I am not a programmer. I can read code and understand basically what's going on, but the details escape me. Txantimedia (talk) 17:42, 3 October 2017 (UTC)
- If you don't know about Namespaces, then read about them Manual:Namespace, Help:Namespaces.
- Your MediaWiki:RefToolbar page should be located at Project:RefToolbar. Also change the link to it at MediaWiki:Gadget-refToolbar.
- There is just so much useless content that you have imported that it is difficult to see exactly what is causing the problem. Instead of copy/pasting entire pages first try to have some idea of what is going on.
- For example, in your MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition page, have your really imported all the gadgets defined there? And in your MediaWiki:Common.js page, what was the need to import all of it from Wikipedia? This is causing errors, in order to get to the root of the issue, remove the content from this page.
- Additionally, it appears that the code you have used for MediaWiki:Gadget-refToolbar.js (from w:Wikipedia:RefToolbar/2.0/porting) has syntax errors that no one happened to catch. Use the code from this old revision, and try again.
- Also, from where did you download Extension:EmbedVideo, in previous versions it had incompatibility issues with Extension:Cite. Try removing EmbedVideo from your LocalSettings.php and see if the issue persists. AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 05:02, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
- @TheDJ can you take another look at w:Wikipedia:RefToolbar/2.0/porting.
- The lines near the end, appear to have a couple of typos related to brackets. If I'm not mistaken the following,should be,
if ( $.inArray( mw.config.get( 'wgAction' ), [ 'edit', 'submit' ] ) !== -1 ) { $( function() { mw.loader.using( ['user.options'] ).done( initializeRefTools ) ); } } }( mediaWiki, jQuery ) );AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 05:24, 4 October 2017 (UTC)if ( $.inArray( mw.config.get( 'wgAction' ), [ 'edit', 'submit' ] ) !== -1 ) { $( function() { mw.loader.using( ['user.options'] ).done( initializeRefTools ) } ); } }( mediaWiki, jQuery ) ); - You are right: made some fixes. Thanks for the ping. —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talk • contribs) 07:26, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
- @AhmadF.Cheema, thanks for your help. I copied the old revision over, and now I have the Cite link plus all the templates. Thanks for your help.
- I removed all the content from MediaWiki:Common.js.
- I got the Embed Video extension from MediaWiki: Extension:EmbedVideo
- Update: Now I've lost the editor entirely. Damn. This is frustrating as hell.
- Second update: If I uncheck the Preference for Enable wizards for inserting links, tables as well as the search and replace function, the editor loads, but I have no Cite link.
- I'm getting errors in the console:

- @AhmadF.Cheema, I added the following to User:Schmehl/common.js and now the editor is working with Cite.
- // install User:Cacycle/wikEdDiff enhanced diff mw.loader.load( '//en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Cacycle/wikEdDiff.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript' );
- My concern now is, does this need to be added to the site common.js file so all users can use the Cite capability? Txantimedia (talk) 02:15, 5 October 2017 (UTC)
- As I mentioned previously, you have imported a lot of useless content such as gadgets (as can be see from, MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition page). Gadgets make use of javascript code and if for some reason that code cannot be used, it can cause errors which affect the entire Wiki (like in this case the wikEdDiff gadget).
- I suggest that you, aside from the few gadget definitions that you specifically included such as for Extension:Cite, remove all other gadget definitions from your MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition page. and try again. AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 08:24, 5 October 2017 (UTC)
- @AhmadF.Cheema, as I said, the Cite link is working now, and I'm not seeing any errors in the console.
- If the documentation was written for admins rather than programmers, it might be a little easier for people like me to set the thing up without running into problems. I had probably read the docs on reftoolbar at least 10 times and checked and rechecked my work repeatedly.
- In MediaWiki 1.29, the Cite button should work out of the box with a new install, once the WikiEditor extension has been installed. It doesn't. Not until I added wikEdDiff, did it work correctly. Nowhere in any of the docs I read was there any mention that wikEdDiff is required for the Cite link to work.
- I'm a capable admin (I would call myself a journeyman), and this is, without a doubt, the most difficult and frustrating software I have ever installed. I spent hours and hours trying to get it working. Then I decided to switch to VisualEditor, but that requires a parsoid service, which I was unable to get working correctly on FreeBSD (my OS of choice.)
- I'm not complaining. I'm giving you input which I hope you will find helpful.
- How do I install Gadgets? I have no idea. Where's a list of Gadgets that are available? I have no idea. Rest assured, I've searched for them.
- I hope you'll pass this info on to the folks that head up the project and ask them to consider writing documentation for the common man. Txantimedia (talk) 16:45, 5 October 2017 (UTC)
- You mentioned something along the lines of "... If I uncheck the Preference for Enable wizards for inserting links, tables as well as the search and replace function, the editor loads, but I have no Cite link." and "does this [User:Cacycle/wikEdDiff] need to be added to the site common.js file so all users can use the Cite capability?"
- Because of the above, I assumed that Cite tab is not working as is expected.
- The Cite tab is not included by default probably because aside from Wikipedia almost all, if not all, Wikimedia foundation Wikis do not use it. It is an extra feature, those who need it can implement it and those who don't can use the default settings.
- As far as I know, wikEdDiff is definitely not needed for the Cite button to work. I personally know a third-party Wiki where it works in the absence of wikEdDiff.
- As I mentioned before, what probably happened was that by including wikEdDiff's definition (or some different gadget) in your MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition page, you inadvertently created a call for that gadget's source code. But when that source code was non-existent on your Wiki, it interfered with the normal loading of WikiEditor and threw out some errors. And when you included the missing code for your User:Schmehl page, the errors got resolved and WikiEditor loaded normally.
- The method to install gadgets is mentioned on the Extension:Gadgets page and as the page mentions an "overview of the gadgets ... is also shown on Special:Gadgets," For example, list of Wikipedia gadgets can be seen from w:Special:Gadgets.
- Additionally, being a volunteer-driven work, a lot of the documentation is not written by the actual developers themselves but by other simple non-dev users. If you can help in making the documentation better, the community will appreciate your contribution. AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 01:18, 6 October 2017 (UTC)
- "If the documentation was written for admins rather than programmers, "
- That's because it's not for admins honestly. Gadgets are custom, improvised and volunteer written software and they require understanding of how and why they work. If we would have started MediaWiki in 2011 instead of 2001, than Gadgets and scripts would never have been added as a feature to MediaWiki as it is squarely dangerous ! But unfortunately we are stuck with them at the WMF wikis.
- This is also why we have so many problems with gadgets on the smaller WMF wikis. You have to understand what you are doing, you have to be able to read the code, and be able to debug and maintain it. —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talk • contribs) 09:28, 6 October 2017 (UTC)

Embedded video thumbnail size

- I'm using mediawiki 1.25.1.
- It's in a secure environment at work so I can't share the URL.
- I am embedding video using:
- {{#video:[path_of_video.ogv]}}
- I am trying to change the video thumbnail size by adding it to the end. For example:
- {{#video:http://video_location/test_video.ogv | 100 }}
- but it doesn't work. I couldn't find any documentation on this. Any help? Thanks. Andrewschlussel (talk) 09:53, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
- Please upgrade. 1.25 has been unsupported for years and is full of security issues nowadays. Malyacko (talk) 12:59, 3 October 2017 (UTC)
- The use of
{{#video:...}}function, as far as I know, is not available in MediaWiki by default. You will have to see which MediaWiki extension your Wiki is using which allows the use of that function. This can be done by taking a look at your Wiki's Special:Version page. AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 14:08, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
Issue with Elasticsearch

Hi All,
We are using the MediaWiki for a few years now, unfortunately 3 weeks ago suddenly stopped working the Elasticsearch properly.
The newly created articles are not getting indexed in the system, so we can't search for them.
We tried to rebuild the Wiki and Elasticsearch, but still the same. We did not see any error message.
A few version details:
MediaWiki 1.23.2
PHP 5.6.3 (apache2handler)
MySQL 5.5.47
Elasticsearch 1.4.1
Unfortunately i can't send you the link as it is not available from the internet.
Thank you,

- You can add something like the following in your MediaWiki:Common.css page.The # value provides the colour value. You can check those values and their corresponding colours from HTML Color Picker.
li.gallerybox div.thumb { background-color: #53708e; } - A quick method to make CSS changes on a website is to use your browser's developer tools.
- To do this, while on your Wiki page, press Ctrl + Shift + C, which will open the element select tool. Click on the webpage element you want to make changes to. This will in-turn open the element IDs and CSS style definitions (like font, colour etc.) for that particular element. Use these definitions in your Common.css page and customize them as required. Adding Extension:Cargo
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Version: Media Wiki 1.29.0
I recently tried adding the Extension:Cargo, as instructed here: Extension:Cargo/Download and installation
As instructed, I copied the 'Cargo' directory into the MediaWiki 'extensions' directory.
I added the following line to the LocalSettings.php file:
wfLoadExtension( 'Cargo' );
The next instruction is as follows:
Once you have the code set up, Cargo has two database tables in the main database that it requires. You will need to set these up by going to MediaWiki's /maintenance directory and calling the following:
php update.php
When I did that, I received the following error:

Is there a way that I can enable the Extension:Cargo? How can I get past this error?
Thank you for you help. Richarddteamaccent (talk) 21:15, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
- When you included the Cargo extension in LocalSettings.php, you used a line starting with wfLoadExtension();. This approach is not (not yet) working for the Cargo extension.
- Instead of using wfLoadExtension(), use
require_once('extensions/Cargo/Cargo.php');- ---
- Another option is to use the branch for MediaWiki 1.30 of the Cargo extension. This corresponds to version 1.4 of the Cargo extension. In this version, the extension does support the wfLoadExtension() approach. 2003:72:6D12:2000:C94E:BE54:24F1:D45D (talk) 22:36, 2 October 2017 (UTC)

- To install Templates and Scripts, you go to Wikipedia and type MediaWiki:Export. That brings up an export window where you can type in what you want. I don't think you need this script, though. It's been replaced by a newer version.
- Read this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Export
- You should read this as well: Manual:Importing external content
- You might also want to read this: http://www.ryadel.com/en/how-to-add-wikipedia-mbox-templates-to-your-own-mediawiki/ Txantimedia (talk) 16:27, 3 October 2017 (UTC)
- By your sentence "You can consider this issue closed", it appeared that the issue was resolved.
- Also for importing gadgets, the more convenient option is to use Special:Gadgets/export. AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 17:29, 3 October 2017 (UTC)
- I tried that. The script is so large it won't import. It times out the same way as when I try to paste it into the page and save it.
- I said consider it closed, because I don't think I need that script. But the problem of the Cite link not showing up in WikiEditor is still unresolved. Txantimedia (talk) 17:33, 3 October 2017 (UTC)

When I enabled the Publish and Cancel buttons, the Publish button worked fine. The Cancel button didn't. It returned this error:

Sessions no longer working on my wiki farm, with MW 1.30
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
- I upgraded the wiki farm that I run, Referata (referata.com) from MW 1.25 to 1.30 yesterday. Unfortunately, now sessions are mostly no longer working - if you log in, you immediately get logged out again, because there's no preservation of sessions. I say "mostly" because sessions work fine on the main subdomain, www.referata.com (which is also accessible at referata.com). But on every other subdomain, they don't work. Is there any setting I can change to make this more likely to work? Or is there an easy way to move session handling back to what it was before? Even a hack is fine - I just want this problem fixed. Yaron Koren (talk) 05:05, 3 October 2017 (UTC)
- Just guesses, but: Do captured HTTP requests and responses reveal any issues? Any custom code in place that might not have been ported to SessionManager/AuthManager? Malyacko (talk) 08:50, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
- I can't find any references to sessions (like session_start(), $_SESSION, etc.) in any of the wiki farm's custom code. And I don't know how to analyze the HTTP stuff to look for session information. Yaron Koren (talk) 15:55, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
- As a starting point try setting $wgSessionCacheType = CACHE_DB;
- Also see Project:Support desk/Flow/2016/07#h-Login_error_(session_hijacking_protection)-2016-07-11T08:56:00.000Z. AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 11:11, 3 October 2017 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, that didn't work for me - I also tried adding "$wgMainCacheType = CACHE_ANYTHING;", but that didn't seem to have an effect either. Thank you, though. Yaron Koren (talk) 14:15, 3 October 2017 (UTC)
- (I just downgraded Referata to MediaWiki 1.26, so this problem is gone for now - but it would be good to know of a fix so that I can upgrade in the future.) Yaron Koren (talk) 15:20, 3 October 2017 (UTC)

I set up my wiki according to the manual. But there was a problem.
$wgHooks['SkinTemplateOutputPageBeforeExec'][] = 'UserAgreementLink';
function UserAgreementLink( $sk, &$tpl ) {
$tpl->set( 'termsofuse', $sk->footerLink( 'termsofuse', '学园都市:用户协议' ) );
$tpl->data['footerlinks']['places'][] = 'termsofuse';
return true;
}
The name of the footer link is defined MediaWiki:Termsofuse, this is OK. And I click on this link(学园都市:用户协议), page jump to the main page. The link is https://gakuencity.org/wiki/⧼学园都市:用户协议⧽.

Controls on form entries

Hi everyone,
for my project, I need that the templates in the forms do a control on the data that the user inserts (synthax, format...).
For example, one info could be "16q23.4". Formatted like this, number(1-32)-character-number(1-32)-dot-number(1-32).
Is it possible to script the template to validate the format of the data like this? And maybe returning a message like "format not valid"?
Thank you for your time and help! Andrea.bozzano87 (talk) 09:15, 4 October 2017 (UTC)

I'm getting used to using LibreOffice 5.4, I learned to like it because of the proposal it presents itself, and I would like to give you these suggestions to make the program much better and more used, to create a version that has these features:
General:
-Improving the icons: Although cute the icons are so colorful they look like programs for kids.
-Make the possibility to change the screen color
- Have the save option in PDF and JPEG
For Writer:
-Have the voice typing feature
-Improve the word suggestion feature by linking it to the program dictionary.
- When viewing a sound it should not open a new window.
For Calc:
-The autocomplete feature works on all cells, not just the column where information is repeated.
For the Drawing program:
-Facilitate the operation of the program. I had difficulty using the pencil, and I did not find the eraser item. Cleberufrb (talk) 03:13, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

I ask because I had a problem with the Cite button (c.f. Project:Support desk/Flow/2017/10#h-Cite_link_doesn't_show_up_in_WikiEditor-2017-10-02T00:02:00.000Z) and the person who helped me, @AhmadF.Cheema, told me that Gadgets should go in the Profject namespace. Most of my gadgets are in the MediaWiki namespace, but putting the reftoolbar gadget in the Project namespace was, partly, what got it working.
So, should I be moving all the gadgets into Project?
I' searched for admin manuals, but haven't found anything on Gadgets with regard to what namespace they should be in.
Any links would be appreciated. Txantimedia (talk) 19:13, 5 October 2017 (UTC)
- Gadgets should be in the MediaWiki namespace, I was only taking about those pages which did not provide the source code for the gadget itself but only provided information about the gadget.
- For example, your MediaWiki:RefToolbar page is not a gadget, it only provides information regarding the gadget RefToolbar (like w:Wikipedia:RefToolbar does on Wikipedia). AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 22:49, 5 October 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you, @AhmadF.Cheema. I am really struggling to understand gadgets. Is there a page that lists the gadgets that come with the default install? Where to find other gadgets and how to install them? Do you just copy the script over to a page with the same name? Import them?
- I haven't found any understandable documentation on gadgets that helps me understand how to deploy them. Txantimedia (talk) 02:25, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
- Basic information is available at Extension:Gadgets. See more at Gadget kitchen.
- No gadgets come with the default install. You can see your gadgets at your Wiki's Special:Gadgets page.
- The red links on that page indicate the missing pages which are required for the gadget to work. Compare your Wiki's Special:Gadgets with Wikipedia's Special:Gadgets. This way you can take a quick look at all your missing pages.
- I would again suggest that you remove gadgets from your MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition page which have red links associated with them as can be seen from your Special:Gadgets page.
- For installing gadgets, you can "just copy the script over to a page with the same name". However, the quicker way to copy gadgets from other Wikis is to use the Export feature. AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 02:58, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks again, @AhmadF.Cheema. I figured this out last night after doing some more reading. I've removed a bunch of gadgets from my definition file and Exported/Imported the ones that i wanted from Wikipedia. Txantimedia (talk) 17:43, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
html2wiki plugin, pages and images loaded, but they do not show

Dear all, Thanks to your contributions I was able to upload a whole bunch of collected html files into my locally xamp-hosted wiki for testing purposes. The plugin reports that all files and images were imported. I can click on individual links and the website opens as expected. However, since the pages were linked before, all cross-reference are gone now. Even worse the plugin reports that the images were uploaded, but when clicking on an image I get the error that the object could not be found on the server, meaning that the upload is confirmed but there are no pictures to be found. Could somebody please shed some light on how to procede after uploading the html-files. Do I have to redo all <a href> linking in my wiki via creating new pages (and copying the content back and forth)? Moreover please do let me know where I might find the images and add them to my article(s).
Sorry for being such a noob. I just started working with mediawiki.
Thanks a mil in advance for any input and your time.

- What "plugin"? How exactly did you "upload html files"? Inside of MediaWiki somehow? What are exact error messages after which steps? In general, see https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:How_to_debug Malyacko (talk) 16:48, 6 October 2017 (UTC)
- Dear Malyacko,
- Thank you for your reply. I was indeed talking about Extension:Html2Wiki, sorry if that was not quite clear. As far as error messages go, I should have added that there were no error messages during the import in question. All files were imported. Bigfoot c (talk) 07:42, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
- I think Extension:Html2Wiki was the "plugin" being mentioned.
- For images, check in your
<Wiki root>/images/directory and its sub-directories to confirm whether the images got uploaded or not. AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 17:11, 6 October 2017 (UTC) - Dear AhmadF.Cheema
- Thanks a mil for your answer. I too a peek into the folder you mentioned and found the pictures I was looking for. So I guess I need to readjust the url(s) manually? Does the same apply to the url(s) of linked websites, because I actually thought that an import would keep the structure of hyperlinks within the website(s) to be imported. If I am supposed to go through each imported site and reset the links manually, I might opt for a different approach. Would be great if you somebody else could provide some detail.
- Thanks a mil in advance for helping out. Bigfoot c (talk) 07:47, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
- If you found your images inside sub-directories with names constituting of, apparently random, two characters - then these images are where they are supposed to be and you don't need to readjust their "url(s) manually" (see Manual:Configuring file uploads#Upload directory).
- According to Extension:Html2Wiki documentation, everything should be done automatically, having not used the extension personally, I can't really say why this isn't happening. AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 11:05, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks a mil for your input. I will read through the manual again and try things out. Maybe I can identify the issue. Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my question(s). Will let you know in case I figure it out. Bigfoot c (talk) 13:49, 10 October 2017 (UTC)

- If this is true, your PHP version is incompatible with MediaWiki 1.29. Most likely the command-line php binary, not the one running on the webserver. Maybe you have 2 different php installations in parallel. You should use the php version compatible with MediaWiki. Maybe you need to use "php7" or "php5" when running maintenance scripts. Medal of Honor, Sgt Rodney M. Davis

I was in Sgt Davis' battalion when he died. Wikipedia graciously shows his story. His awards are correct, but incomplete. I have added the Presidential Unit Citation (PUC) with 1 star, in the text edit. I did not find how to include a picture of the PUC. I managed to rearrange the medals picture, except for showing the PUC, and the Medal of Honor should be centered in the top row, vs to the left (as you look at it). If you would help an old Marine take care of this it would be much appreciated.
I also added some text at the end of his biography, however, it appears to have entered correctly, so I don't need assistance with that. Thank you sir. Ray Willis - 03 (talk) 20:59, 6 October 2017 (UTC)
- This is the section we are talking about: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rodney_M._Davis#Military_awards
- I have just fixed the display of the PUC image and the according link. Also I have moved the Medal of Honor to the center.
- Note that the additions you made to the article text still need to be reworked: They are not written from a neutral point of view and their style does not yet fit to an encyclopedia. Xtools Edit counter is not so good
I noticed that it claims I did 30 edits in the last 24 hours, which is untrue, and it doesn't show my top 20 edited pages in each category like the old edit counter. Instead I have to click on the top of the page and I get something less useful. Is there a link to the old edit counter page? Thanks, L3X1 (talk) 02:26, 7 October 2017 (UTC)
How do I get MediaWiki to recognize a quotation mark is in the middle of an external URL?
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
I'm trying to add to my wiki a link to <nowiki>https://web.archive.org/web/20080327183432/http://www.sharecg.com:80/v/22400/poser/Dainty-Dress-"UPDATED</nowiki> MediaWiki truncates the link at the quotation mark, even if I wrap the link in square brackets - this breaks the link. As a workaround, I've wrapped the URL in nowiki tags, but that makes this the only non-clickable link on its page.
Obviously, I can't ask archive.org to change one of their Wayback Machine links to fix this.
I can't find anything on the Help page for links showing how to code an external link with a quotation mark in the middle. How do I do it? Robkelk (talk) 16:13, 7 October 2017 (UTC)
- Instead try:
- https://web.archive.org/web/20080327183432/http://www.sharecg.com:80/v/22400/poser/Dainty-Dress-%22UPDATED
- See ref_urlencode for URL encoding other special characters.
- Another method is to use URL data Magic words. Insert
{{urlencode:character}}for the problematic character. For example: - https://web.archive.org/web/20080327183432/http://www.sharecg.com:80/v/22400/poser/Dainty-Dress-{{urlencode:"}}UPDATED AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 16:31, 7 October 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks. The hex-encoding makes the most sense to me, so I'll go with that. Robkelk (talk) 19:11, 7 October 2017 (UTC)
Error, Setup.php must be included from the file scope, after DefaultSettings.php

Hello,
I try to install a copy of MediaWiki but I get this error on the installer page:
Error, Setup.php must be included from the file scope, after DefaultSettings.php
Any solution ? Adrianevs (talk) 09:12, 8 October 2017 (UTC)
- Provide additional information like how did you get MediaWiki, what MediaWiki version, what PHP version and what operating system.
- If you're on linux, be sure you don't have a MediaWiki package already installed in case you are downloading from MediaWiki.org. Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 09:29, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
Javascript requires multiple reloads to appear
I'm running on FreeBSD 10.3, php 7.1 and Mediawiki 1.29.
I studied the Extension:WikiEditor/Toolbar customization/Library and wrote a widget to add an icon to the toolbar. It allows you to highlight some text with your mouse, then click on the icon to enclose the text in the following code: <span background-color: yellow>Your text here</span>. Then all the editor has to do is change the color.
The problem is, the icon sometimes doesn't show up, and you have to reload the edit page repeatedly to get it to appear. What would cause this apparently random behavior? I'm not seeing any errors in console. But I am seeing these notices:
[Warning] This page is using the deprecated ResourceLoader module "jquery.ui.widget".
[Warning] This page is using the deprecated ResourceLoader module "jquery.ui.position".
[Warning] This page is using the deprecated ResourceLoader module "jquery.ui.core".

[Warning] Use of "wgPageName" is deprecated. Use mw.config instead. (load.php, line 153)
Here's the code, basically stolen from that page and modified:
var customizeToolbar = function() {
/* Your code goes here */
$('#wpTextbox1').wikiEditor('addToToolbar', {
section: 'advanced',
group: 'format',
tools: {
"highlight": {
label: 'Highlight',
type: 'button',
icon: 'images/highlight.png',
action: {
type: 'encapsulate',
options: {
pre: "<span style=\"background-color: yellow\">",
post: "</span>"
}
}
}
}
});
};
/* Check if view is in edit mode and that the required modules are available. Then, customize the toolbar … */
if ($.inArray(mw.config.get('wgAction'), ['edit', 'submit']) !== -1) {
mw.loader.using('user.options').then(function() {
// This can be the string "0" if the user disabled the preference
if (mw.user.options.get('usebetatoolbar') == 1) {
$.when(
mw.loader.using('ext.wikiEditor.toolbar'), $.ready
).then(customizeToolbar);
}
});
}

- @TheDJ, you're going to have to walk me through that, or send me to an instruction page. I'm not a programmer. How do I call that function inside a setTimeout() to force a delay?
- And what about the deprecated warnings? Is there something I need to do? Or just ignore them? Txantimedia (talk) 15:38, 12 October 2017 (UTC)
- With setTimeout:

To fix them you should locate first where are they being used and replace them by the correct replacement: mw.config.get() instead of calling wg* variables directly. Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 20:43, 12 October 2017 (UTC)
- Right now the editor is so flaky it's ridiculous. Sometimes it appears. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the yellow highlighter appears. Sometimes it doesn't. The Publish and Cancel buttons come and go. The Find and Replace button comes and goes. Why was all this crap written in Javascript? It seems to be highly unreliable. Txantimedia (talk) 06:18, 13 October 2017 (UTC)
- It may be caused by another error. Leave the error console open and look for errors when the entire editor doesn't appear. Note that it requires JavaScript because browsers don't provide such functionality. Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 09:31, 13 October 2017 (UTC)
- What I'm finding is that I get different errors depending upon which skin I use:
- Vector - the editor appears but the yellow highlighter button I added never does
- This is the console output: No errors, only warnings, but no yellow highlighter, despite repeated reloads.Monobook - the editor appears but the yellow highlighter button never does. Console is the same. Ditto for Modern.

- Cologne Blue - the same behavior as the others, but with an error in the consoleAnd finally, Timeless, the skin I prefer - no editor ever, no publish or cancel buttons, no search/replace button - nothing at all

I think what this tells me is that skins make a difference in whether or not the editor loads, but the customized button I created is a different problem. At this point, I'm getting very frustrated with this.[Error] TypeError: null is not an object (evaluating 'sidebar.appendChild') rfmenu (index.php:341) fire (load.php:45:128) fireWith (load.php:46:436) ready (load.php:49:422) completed (load.php:49:938) [Warning] This page is using the deprecated ResourceLoader module "jquery.ui.position". - UPDATE: And, just like that, the editor suddenly appears in Timeless - still no custom highlighter button. The behavior of the editor is so flaky and unreliable that it's almost not worth having. There has to be some underlying cause for this behavior, but where would I look to find it?
- 2nd UPDATE: I found this log, but it's empty: less log/errors.log. You're probably going to tell me I don't have error logging enabled. Off to Google again. Txantimedia (talk) 20:26, 13 October 2017 (UTC)
- This likely has nothing to do with the editor. You probably have some custom script, or outdated/broken extension that is throwing JS errors, which breaks the rest of the JS on the page. Whatever is creating the
sidebar.appendChilderror is at least one of the causes, so you should track that down. The fact that it happens randomly makes it seem to be a race condition, perhaps a script relying on another script to load first, or a certain element to be created. - As for error logs, those are only server side things, like PHP errors. You won't find client side errors there, those are only in your browser console. 121.220.52.60 (talk) 05:43, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
- I just installed 1.29 about a month ago. All my extensions have been installed from the MediaWiki Extensions Directory, and all of them are supposed to be for 1.29.
- I greped the files for sidebar.appendChild, but it returned nothing. I assume this means the suspect Javascript is in the db. How can I trace down the offending file? Txantimedia (talk) 21:22, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
- Maybe try disabling all other gadgets and see if it changes anything. AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 12:07, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
- I enabled the debug console but found nothing useful.
- I opened console, clicked on edit, then looked at the results. This is the Javascript that's causing the error:How do I find this thing and get rid of it?
/************* *** Regex menu framework 1.2 *** by [[m:user:Pathoschild]] *** documentation: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Pathoschild/Script:Regex_menu_framework *************/ /* create menu */ var container = document.createElement('div'); container.setAttribute('class','portlet portal collapsed'); container.setAttribute('id','p-regex'); sidebar.appendChild(container); - UPDATE: Never mind. Input box for redirecting to categories?
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Hello. I need an automated redirecting in my wiki.
I thought of an input box, where for example you enter "1950" and you get redirected to a [[:Category:Born 1950]], you enter "1936" and get redirected to a [[:Category:Born 1936]] and so on.
I only found input boxes for page creation, but not for page redirecting. How to do it? 23x23x23 (talk) 15:22, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
- Create the 1950 page with
#REDIRECT [[:Category:Born 1950]]and whenever someone enters 1950 in the search box and clicks on it, they will be redirected to the aforementioned category. │Star-Warden│ 15:43, 9 October 2017 (UTC) - Star Warden: If there are 2000 categories for Born... and 2000 categories for Died... then this makes 4000 redirects to create. To avoid exactly that work that you present as a solution, i am looking for an input box that can redirect by script.
- Any better ideas anyone? 23x23x23 (talk) 19:20, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
- If Extension:CirrusSearch is available, through the InputBox method, this might be possible by using the prefix or searchfilter parameters.
- CirrusSearch allows for special parameters like incategory. For example, using the followingwhen the user enters 1950, the search results would probably include articles in the category, Born 1950. AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 09:33, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
<inputbox> prefix=incategory:Born </inputbox>
- That sounds interesting. Is there a wiki with a similar CirrusSearch installed, so i can check it out before installing? 23x23x23 (talk) 11:57, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
- Most, if not all, Wikimedia foundation Wikis should have it. You can try it on Project:Sandbox or w:Wikipedia:Sandbox.
- I tried this particular solution, couldn't make prefix parameter to work for this use-case.The above InputBox searches for the entered search term in the category "Disambiguation pages".
<inputbox> type=search searchfilter=incategory:Disambiguation_pages </inputbox>
- However, if I understand correctly, your use-case requires the "Disambiguation_pages" part to be a variable determined by what the user enters. I don't know if that's possible. Could be doable using Extension:InputBox#Parser function, though. AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 12:20, 10 October 2017 (UTC)

Hello,
Is it possible that the warning from the title could derive from an SQL injection attempt?
These kind of warnings apeared from 5 oct 2017 on my mediawiki (1.23) log, but I didn't modified the files in any way. 2A04:2413:8300:8480:910C:3D98:E70B:A39E (talk) 10:03, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
- 1.23 is an ancient unsupported version which does not receive security upgrades anymore. Please upgrade to a supported version for your own safety. Malyacko (talk) 10:42, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
- You are right. But the upgrade process is so complex that I think a new installation is easier to do than an update......And after I finish the update a new version will be available... Anyway as long as that is an error it means that the hack did not succeed. Regards. 2A04:2413:8300:8480:6094:E3E1:9F65:2B3E (talk) 12:30, 10 October 2017 (UTC)

Image insert mixed Datei: and File:
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Hello everyone!
Since a short time, i've the phenomen that the editor inserts [[File:xxxx.filetype]] instead of [[Datei:xxxx.filetype]].
Since my wiki is formerly used in German languge, this is a problem, so most of the images are only shown as links, which are not working.
My Questions:
1) Where can i set the inser languge of the editor to makje him always produce "Datei:" links?
2) Can i set the Wiki to accept both "File:" and "Datei:" as Image-Links?
Thanks,
Steve SteveStx (talk) 11:30, 11 October 2017 (UTC)
- You shouldn't need to.
- It should already do that.
- To show that this is how things should work, I copied Salasaca to my sandbox on dewiki and then changed the wikitext to use "File:" or "Image:" instead of "Datei:".
- Both continued to work.
- Maybe we could be more help if you point to your wiki or, if it isn't public, give us the version number of MediaWiki that you are running. ☠MarkAHershberger☢(talk)☣ 14:43, 11 October 2017 (UTC)

Problems with database import
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Good day.
I have problems with restoring the site from a backup.
Or rather, with the restoration of the database.
It's about the site http://wiki.brownie-soft.com/
The database dump was made in automatic mode in the control panel of the hosting provider, the backup system is similar to this instruction:
https://www.siteground.com/tutorials/php-mysql/mysql_export.htm
The database itself, judging by the tables in it, uses a predominantly binary scheme http://prntscr.com/gvsi36
When importing, no errors were observed, the import was performed both through the interface and from the command line using the following command
mysql -u wikidb_user -p wikidb <dump_of_wikidb.skl
As a result of import, the contents of articles stored in the database on the site are not displayed, only the headings of these articles are displayed: http://prntscr.com/gvsj89
In the database itself, the data is displayed as follows: http://prntscr.com/gvsidt
Tell me, please, what I'm doing wrong, and how to import imports correctly so that the contents of the articles on the site are displayed. Stnpwr (talk) 12:01, 11 October 2017 (UTC)
- Here is some good news: the content is there and the wiki can access it. See this API query of the page DarkStream, for example.
- Can you run update.php to see if that helps?
- Also, it looks like you recently upgraded php. If you can, I would upgrade to PHP 5.6 and then later update MediaWiki to the LTS, at least. ☠MarkAHershberger☢(talk)☣ 14:30, 11 October 2017 (UTC)

How do they do that? For example:
[[phab:T134423]]
- They use Manual:Interwiki Reception123 (talk) 17:04, 12 October 2017 (UTC)
- According to the docs, Interwiki is supposed to be builtin since 1.21. It's not. This makes no sense to me. If it's builtin, it should work out of the box. Yet it doesn't. And the documentation is confusing. For example:
This extension comes with MediaWiki 1.21 and above. Thus you do not have to download it again. However, you still need to follow the other instructions provided.
| MediaWiki version | Extension version |
|---|---|
| 1.21+ | bundled with core |
| 1.19+ | 2.1+ |
- So, if it's bundled with core, why doesn't it work? I'm running 1.29.The name of what database? How is a guy supposed to figure this stuff out? Txantimedia (talk) 05:55, 13 October 2017 (UTC)
To set up a central interwiki table, simply provide the name of the database of the wiki you want to use: // To enable pulling global interwikis from a central database $wgInterwikiCentralDB = 'mw_central'; Replace 'mw_central' with the name of the database.
- Unless you're installing from Git, Extension:Interwiki is "bundled with core". However, this only means that there is no need to download the extension again, it still has to be enabled in LocalSettings.php.
- After enabling the extension, insert
[[wikipedia:Main_Page]]in one of your pages and if this redirects to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page, then it means the Interwiki link is working. - The "phab" "Interwiki" link is not included by default. For adding additional Interwiki links, you will need to edit your Wiki's Special:Interwiki page. AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 07:26, 13 October 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks again, @AhmadF.Cheema. You have, as always, been very helpful. Txantimedia (talk) 19:46, 13 October 2017 (UTC)

Are there any standards for skins?
I spent some time figuring out how to add a Comodo SSL icon to the footer. After I got it working, I checked it in all the skins. In Cologne Blue there are no icons at all. The Powered By and Copyright icons aren't even there. In Modern, the icons didn't appear. Just the Alt text was there, linked to the relevant sites. In Monobook, the Copyright icon was on the far left, the Comodo in the middle and the Powered by on the far right. In Vector, the order was reversed from what it is in my preferred skin, Timeless.
Are there no rules for skins at all? It seems there ought to be a requirement for some defaults that would appear in all skins. Either that's not the case, or it's not being honored. Shouldn't MediaWiki at least require that the bundled skins behave as expected? Txantimedia (talk) 23:40, 13 October 2017 (UTC)
- You didn’t say the technique you used to make it work. Generally speaking there is no guarantee that all skins support all skinning features; Vector is the reference skin, MonoBook has still some support, Minerva is the default skin on mobile, and Timeless is currently experimental, others are probably less supported.
- To customise the footer icons, you can use $wgFooterIcons, or the hooks SkinGetPoweredBy and SkinCopyrightFooter, but again there is no guarantee they will be displayed on all skins. ~ Seb35 [^_^] 13:54, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
- I used this:Txantimedia (talk) 21:08, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
$wgFooterIcons = [ "copyright" => [ "copyright" => [], // placeholder for the built in copyright icon ], "poweredby" => [ "mediawiki" => [ // Defaults to point at // "$wgResourceBasePath/resources/assets/poweredby_mediawiki_88x31.png" // plus srcset for 1.5x, 2x resolution variants. "src" => null, "url" => "//www.mediawiki.org/", "alt" => "Powered by MediaWiki", ] ], "comodo" => [ "comodo" => [ "src" => "/images/trusted-site-seal-sm.png", "url" => "https://www.comodo.com", "alt" => "SSL by Comodo", "width" => "94", "height" => "49", ] ], ];
Test email?

What is the best way to make a MediaWiki installation send an email for testing purposes?
I'm working to get SMTP configured properly but am not sure how to easily trigger the wiki to send a test message. Thanks for any suggestions! Huwmanbeing (talk) 19:54, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
- You can request a new password on the login page, it should send an email. Or when logged as user, you can also authenticate your email from the preferences. ~ Seb35 [^_^] 18:47, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
- If you have your own SMTP server: If you can it is better to monitor the SMTP server to check if it really send the emails during your initial setup. If you cannot, be careful about the spam filters in the receiving email address. If you don’t receive the email there are two possibilities: either it was not send by MediaWiki and/or your SMTP server, either the receiving address put it in the Spam folder or even discarded the email because your SMTP server don’t have a good (enough) reputation.
- When it will work you should monitor your SMTP server to keep and ideally improve its reputation (be sure it don’t send spam, add mechanisms like SPF and/or DKIM, check and monitor major DNSBLs, fill forms in major email providers to certify your good practices, etc.). You don’t have to do all these actions, but the more you do the better your email quality and deliverability will be.
- All this does not really apply if you send MediaWiki emails through an email provider (Gmail, Yahoo, Microsoft, etc.), although you should anyway monitor the emails are really sent, for instance once a month or once a year. ~ Seb35 [^_^] 19:01, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
- Hi all,
- This isn't wanting ananswer myself but I just wanted to share helpful information regarding this as I too was struggling and I was wondering this exact question.
- @Seb35 suggestion of requesting a new password on the from the logon page can only be done once every 24 hours but during troubleshooting it is required to be done more regularly than that and I discovered a way of doing this which pointed me exactly to to look at my PHP.ini configuration that IIS was using as it mentioned where the issue was and I could test regularly.
- You don't need the email to work to setup your own account as the administrator so with your own account that you created without the email notification,you can, navigate to:
- http://YOURWIKIURL/index.php?title=Special:EmailUser/
- or if you wanted to test emailing to your self you can do directly there with:
- http://YOURWIKIURL/index.php?title=Special:EmailUser/YOURUESRNAME
- On that page you can write a test message and send it as many times as you like, that was when my wiki informed me that it could not connect to LOCALHOST and to check my PHP.ini (not where I wanted it to connect to but I knew I installed that previous to get the site working and configured my IIS to use it, so it pointed me in the right direction)
- This Thread can be closed again now but I wanted to get that information to people.
- Kind regards

Is there a way to display global variables from wikitext?
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
I wanted to update some documentation on Wikipedia and as part of that wanted to include the $wgEchoMaxMentionsCount value. I suspect I could get it from a user defined JavaScript function but want the value to be available to everyone looking at the article. Is there something I can put in standard wikitext to display the global variable's value?
For example, the value is hardcoded on wikipedia:Wikipedia:Notifications#Spamming as "50". I'd rather replace that with something that shows the $wgEchoMaxMentionsCount variable's value as it may not be set to 50 on all sites.
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/diffusion/ECHO/browse/master/includes?grep=wgEchoMaxMentionsCount shows where this variable gets set and used. Marc Kupper (talk) 04:24, 15 October 2017 (UTC)

Remove page from internal search suggestions

When I start typing in my wiki's search bar, articles that match what I'm typing start to appear. Is there a way to remove certain pages from being listed? I have a page that is a redirect which I would like to exclude from the search suggestions. I placed __NOINDEX__ on the page but it looks like that only affects how other search engines view the page. Jer Hughes (talk) 03:54, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
- According to this, it should get excluded from search suggestions.
- Maybe there are some jobs left which are causing this delay. To see number of remaining jibs, browse to your Wiki's: https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&meta=siteinfo&siprop=statistics&format=jsonfm AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 18:50, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
- No pending jobs. I'm confused by the link though, it talks about deleting the redirect page. I didn't delete the page, I'd like to keep it, just not have it appear in the search suggestions. Jer Hughes (talk) 01:38, 17 October 2017 (UTC)
- No, NOINDEX doesn't affect search suggestions.
- Looking at mailarchive:wikitech-l/2016-February/084776.html, apparently you would need to create a custom SearchEngine class and use it in $wgSearchType. Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 09:40, 17 October 2017 (UTC)
Translation on the fly?
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Hello,
Is there a way to translate a page on the fly? I know there is the Translate extension, but what I'm looking for is a solution without having to set each translatable page manually. The text to translate would be words and short phrases, not prose.
I have in mind the selectors that can be found at the top of the pages on zhwiki, hiwiki and hywiki. What is the name of these extensions/features?
Thank you in advance. Korg (talk) 11:24, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
- Do you mean Extension:ContentTranslation ? Malyacko (talk) 18:30, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
- Can the ContentTranslation extension be used to translate and directly display translated text of content pages, without any particular intervention?
- I will try to be more explicit. Suppose there is the heading "References" in thousands of pages. If the user changes the display language via the Universal Language Selector, e.g. in Hungarian, the heading would be automatically translated as "Források".
- There is a solution with the {{int:x}} magic word, but I would be interested in a simpler approach. Korg (talk) 20:52, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
- The selectors at the top of such pages are because those are language variants, not different languages, and MediaWiki can perform the translation internally. See Writing systems#LanguageConverter Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 09:52, 17 October 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you for the link! Korg (talk) 13:17, 17 October 2017 (UTC)
- Sorry, the topic is not resolved. Perhaps I have not been clear enough.
- I would like to find a way to automatically translate words and short phrases in content pages.
- Currently it can be done with the help of templates, the {{int:}} magic word, or a call to Wikidata, but somehow it could be cumbersome if there are thousands of pages involved, and not really easy for new users.
- Perhaps this request is beyond the scope of the Support desk, and I should open a request elsewhere? Korg (talk) 11:24, 18 October 2017 (UTC)
- Maybe you can try bulk find and replace?
- For example, find all instances of "short phrase" on the Wiki and simultaneously replace all of them with something like "{{int:short phrase}}". AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 11:42, 18 October 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestion! But I think I would avoid the use of the {{int:}} magic word.
- As new pages would be created, this magic word would have to be automatically added (Ok, this could be done by a bot).
- Also, it seems that this magic word was intended for interface messages, so only administrators could create or update such messages (but perhaps it could be used with messages outside the MediaWiki namespace?). Korg (talk) 12:26, 18 October 2017 (UTC)
- Install google translate on your website(wiki)? https://support.google.com/translate/answer/2534601 Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 20:56, 18 October 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestion.
- Actually, I was thinking of a Wikimedia wiki, namely Wikispecies.
- There have been efforts to localize the site, please see species:Wikispecies:Localization.
- About a year ago, there was an attempt to add the {{int:}} magic word to the headings, see species:Wikispecies:Village_Pump/Archive_38#Language-dependent_headings. But the project was stopped due to several concerns.
- I was wondering if alternative solutions to translate headings and content texts exist. Korg (talk) 22:34, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
Search box spins and then returns "No match was found"

Suddenly my search box stopped working. Previously, it would return previews of all matches. Now, no matter what you type, it displays a spinning wheel and then returns "No match was found"
Thinking I would fix the problem, I went to the trouble of installing the Extension:SphinxSearch, which requires also installing and configuring Sphinx. The search now returns all sorts of stuff, but I still get the No match was found and spinning wheel, making it appear that the search isn't working.
What do I look for to resolve this problem? I'm not seeing any errors in the console.

(also posted at Extension talk:InputBox)
Is there any way to implement an option in the InputBox extension to choose between basepage prefixes in the same way that |namespaces= can search a specific namespace?
I would like to be able use the |type=create option with a preset list of prefixes, e.g.:
<inputbox> type = create prefixes = Option1/**, Option2/, Option3/ </inputbox>
For context, I'm looking to include on v:WikiJournal_Preprints the following:
<inputbox> type = create buttonlabel = Create pre-print placeholder = Pre-print title prefixes = WikiJournal of Medicine/**, WikiJournal of Science/, WikiJournal of Humanities/, WikiJournal of Extra/ break = no preload = WikiJournal_Preprints/preload_draft </inputbox
Would that be something possible to implement? T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 00:25, 17 October 2017 (UTC)
- InputBox does not support that, and it would require modifications to the input box extension. Since you ask for a WMF wiki, you should open up a bugreport to request that, but don't expect it to be implemented soon (if ever implemented). You may have more luck implementing it in JavaScript. - Unfortunately, there is a security breach in the http://0wikipedia.org project, which has been launched in many countries to provide access to wikipedia, which is blocked by various legal problems.
- On the basis of business logic, the redirected URLs are hidden by the Base64 encoding method, and this content is reflected directly on the page.
- The open tack is exactly at this point, the attacker can encode it here as a scripted base64 that he wants.
- Although I have notified by email to wikimedia, wikipedia and related persons about this vulnerability, unfortunately there has not been a return and I did not mind to explain that it was not within the scope of bugbounty.

- Which tables and columns are using cp1251 as a collation? I think these tables and columns are problematic.
- Is there only the new MediaWiki installation inside that database? Or is there also something else in it and you may be using both systems together? If it is only this new wiki, I would empty the database, then make sure the collation for new tables is utf8_general_ci and then let MediaWiki install its things into the database again.
- However, I am still unsure, for why the tables had not been created with fitting collations right away. I think the installer should offer utf8 and binary only, not cp1251. utf8 and binary both are ok, but a mix with cp1251 should not be there. 2003:CC:ABCA:4500:6C82:D7A8:4772:450D (talk) 21:43, 17 October 2017 (UTC)

Is there an easy way to enable this feature or do i need to adapt the code for that? How is that done on WP or Commons? Aschroet (talk) 12:19, 18 October 2017 (UTC)
- Try setting $wgAllowHTMLEmail, although the page says "As of MW 1.23, HTML email is not yet used by MediaWiki itself", maybe it now supports it and the page is outdated. Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 09:28, 19 October 2017 (UTC)

Controlling how blank values are displayed in a template
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Mediawiki Version: 1.31.0-wmf.4 (477691b)
PHP: any
Database:
A template is used in the Kabiye wiki called Ɛyaa sɔsaa which is the Kabiye Famous Persons' template. The address of the template is [1] and the wiki address is [2]
The signature of a famous person should only be shown if such (a signature) exists. At present, a contributor can enter a file name for a signature, but if this value is left blank, the message [[File:|190px]] is displayed which is unsatisfactory... This is the final value that is entered.
All text on the wiki is in the Kabiye language, with the exception of some French and English words, so for example the title of the Ɛyaa sɔsaa template is Modèle:Ɛyaa sɔsaa - a mixture of French & Kabiye. The Wiki went live - (came out of the incubator) about 2 months ago.
We would value any help as to how to change the template so as to only display a signature if one has been supplied. My best guess would be that some conditional statement needs to be included in the [[File: statement and have searched the existing help entries - but with no joy...
Any suggestions would be greatly valued.
I am using a Windows 7 PC and Google Chrome Version 61.0.3163.100 to update the Kabiye wikipedia. SFLord (talk) 17:46, 18 October 2017 (UTC)
- Your use of #if is not correct. Instead of {{#if: [[File:{{{E-nesi ñɩɣʋ}}}|190px]]}}, use {{#if:{{{E-nesi ñɩɣʋ|}}}|[[File:{{{E-nesi ñɩɣʋ}}}|190px]]}} Clump (talk) 21:39, 18 October 2017 (UTC)
- Clump
- Thanks for your help to resolve this problem. Of course the #if conditional statement has to test for the existence of E-nesi ñɩɣʋ and then ensure that it is displayed if a value has been given.
- A subsequent issue is that the Ɛyaa sɔsaa template contains 2 statements referring to the pixcel size - the first controls the image size and is the 3rd value to be added, the second is the one which is now controlled by the conditional #if statement.
- We rarely, if ever, do not supply an image for a famous person, however it is frequently the case that a signature cannot be found. If an image is supplied, but no signature and the first px value is left blank, the template will by default use the px value in the final statement, but the warning:
- Warning: [null Euclid] is calling Modèle:Ɛyaa sɔsaa with more than one value for the "px" parameter. Only the last value provided will be used. When previewing the page (in this case its the page to do with Euclid...) and the message:
- Pages utilisant des arguments dupliqués dans les appels de modèle
- is displayed, when the page is published.
- The temporary resolution is to remove the first px statement from the template for those famous person pages which have no signature. I will almost certainly remove the first px statement from the Ɛyaa sɔsaa template file, but will check with the sponsor of the Kabiye wiki first. SFLord (talk) 12:17, 19 October 2017 (UTC)

Hi! As WikiJournals expand on Wikiversity (v:WikiJMed, v:WikiJSci, v:WikiJHum), the need to format references from DOI or PMID codes is becoming more important. Is it possible to enable the Citoid extension? T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 06:27, 19 October 2017 (UTC)
- It already is installed, as far as I understand, you just need to configure it to match the preferences of your wiki installation. Please see VisualEditor/Citation_tool and Citoid#Configure_Citoid_on_a_Citoid-enabled_wiki. —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talk • contribs) 11:13, 19 October 2017 (UTC)
- I've had a look though the documentation, but it's a bit beyond my technical expertise. Would it be possible to ask for some assistance so that I don't break anything? T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 06:50, 22 October 2017 (UTC)
- It would be really useful, in the meantime, to understand which parts of Citoid/Enabling Citoid on your wiki you're specifically struggling with. Thanks. Elitre (WMF) (talk) 09:57, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
- It looks like Wikiversity has the same templates en wiki does, so it makes it a little easier; you can just copy everything from en wiki. The template data on Wikiversity is outdated, so you need to
- 1) Copy all the template data from en wiki to Wikiversity for the following templates: Citation, Cite web, Cite book, Cite journal, Cite news, Cite thesis (that's everything between the <templatedata></templatedata> part in the Template:Citation/doc page). If you have someone with import rights it's easier but can be done manually too.
- 2) Copy this message verbatim: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Citoid-template-type-map.json
- And then you should be good. Mvolz (WMF) (talk) 11:22, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
- sadly the first step I'm unclear on is step 2a, how to create a Create a citoid map, and which ones Wikiversity already has. Do I just copy across the contents of https://en.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Template:Cite_journal/doc to a Wikiversity page? And is that page meant to have a lua script error at the top? T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 12:11, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
- The "map" is inside the templatedata, so if you are copying it from en wiki, it is already there.
- You should copy the template data from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Cite_journal/doc, the beta template data is very outdated. Mvolz (WMF) (talk) 16:35, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
- . Mvolz (WMF) (talk) 16:35, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you Mvolz (WMF). I've started copying across the <templatedata>. Sadly I don't have edit permissions for [3], but we're one step closer! T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 12:21, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
- Fantastic! I've copied across the current wikipedia versions of the cite_X/doc <templatedata>, and one of the wikiversity admins has now imported the final json https://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Citoid-template-type-map.json page. Everything seems to be working! If you have a moment, please do check if there's anything I've missed. Thanks again for the help. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 01:54, 24 October 2017 (UTC)

- (This question is better suited for a CentOS forum than a MediaWiki forum.)
- You don't seem to only "install" but also "compile" first. Software often needs to link against other software when compiling. That requires the corresponding developer packages. So maybe libmount is installed, but you probably need libmount-dev (or whatever its name is on CentOS). Malyacko (talk) 06:37, 23 October 2017 (UTC)

Because the package is called "libmount-devel" on CentOS. ""Libmount-dev" does not exist. So it cannot be installed.
- More important: Why do you want to compile librsvg? Instead of installing the librsvg package which is already available in CentOS, by the CentOS packagers?
- But anyway: Compiling dependency software of dependency software of the MediaWiki software is out of scope for MediaWiki's help desk. Malyacko (talk) 08:38, 23 October 2017 (UTC)

Heading CSS styles

Hello,
I am currently working on my first wikipedia-like project for my classmates here at Czech Republic, but I am stuck at "heading" thing: Is there any way to find out how the CSS source code looks like at the headings? I would like to use these headings CSS in my template (with a proper copyright, of course), but I have no idea how to see them - if it's even possible.
Thank you very much. 195.113.92.168 (talk) 06:57, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
- Not sure exactly what you are talking about. On which page is this "heading" thing used?
- Generally speaking, to take a quick look at the CSS code concerning any webpage element, the browser developer tools are used. Press Ctrl + Shift + C (this will open a pointer tool) and select a webpage element that you want to inspect. AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 08:04, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you for your reply.
- I am talking about the headings (and their levels, such as h1, h2 and so on) on any wikipedia page. I do know about the browser developer tools, unfourtunately that won't help me, because I would love to know, how exactly are they used / what is inside the "span class" so I can replicate it to my template. 195.113.92.168 (talk) 13:03, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
- How some HTML element is rendered is defined by the MediaWiki skin/theme that you're using to view a MediaWiki site. https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools/Web_Console (for Firefox) explains how to use the Developer Tools of your web browser. Similar documentation exists for other web browsers. Malyacko (talk) 14:08, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you for your reply.
- I have found out the element defining in the developer tools, that is fine. What I still don't know, though, is how exactly can I copy the source onto my own template, because I don't know, what's inside the CSS that the headings are reffering to.
- For example: I went to the Wikipedia article about "Information". The "Information" heading is what I would like to replicate, but when I use the developer tools console (examining the element), all I see is following:
- <h1 id="firstHeading" class="firstHeading" lang="cs"> == $0
- ::before
- "Informace"

I uploaded photos in time required to participate in the contest. The website acknowledged proper upload. Much to my dismay, today upload time was changed with 3-4 hr delay thus eliminating me from contest. What happened? Please help to clarify the issue. Thank you! Semantic-Mediawiki
I recently found out about this. I read quite a bit, but didn't see anything along the lines of "Why should I install this on my wiki?"

Collapsible tables on af.wiktionary

Hi. af.wiktionary has been standing still for many years, but we are trying to get it going again. I have no idea where to ask this question, so sorry if this is the wrong venue. It seems that collapsible tables do not work on the site. I tried the same little table on af.wikipedia where it worked fine but not on af.wiktionary. Can this e remedied? - So https://af.wiktionary.org/wiki/Gebruiker:Jcwf . I don't see any sense in collapsing a single line.

- Sorry I had not saved that table. Look again https://af.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gebruiker:Jcwf/Sandkas. Jcwf (talk) 14:36, 25 October 2017 (UTC)
- If you have any doubt on the utility of collapsible tables I invite you to visit en:wiktionary and look how often that is used. Jcwf (talk) 14:41, 25 October 2017 (UTC)
- This issue is probably because MediaWiki:Common.js (af.wiktionary) is missing the required "Collapsible tables" JavaScript, which is present in MediaWiki:Common.js (af.wikipedia). The relevant .js code will need to be added to make collapsible tables to work. AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 15:36, 25 October 2017 (UTC)

- If you really still run 1.23 you have an old unsupported version which nowadays has security vulnerabilities. See https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Upgrading how to upgrade. Malyacko (talk) 15:23, 25 October 2017 (UTC)
- Malyacko is right. Apart from that: Yes, the function wfLoadSkin already is not available in MediaWiki 1.23. And that is only one line, which this skin needs.
- After you upgraded to MediaWiki 1.29, you will have way better chances. :-) 2003:CC:ABC3:8400:805:E2AE:A5FC:2546 (talk) 17:43, 25 October 2017 (UTC)

- Hey folks... The search results page on my mediawiki install doesn't have any css formatting showing up. The page is functional, but the formatting is all off. This is true for any of the included skins. I recently updated to mediawiki 1.27.1 . All other pages in the wiki seem to have the right formatting... I initially thought this was a permission issue on some file in skins/ but I can't seem to find which files are involved here. Anyone have any idea about this?
- [<possible spam link removed> Cheers] Violab1 (talk) 07:24, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
- Violab1, the styling information is loaded using the Resource Loader. An unstyled page points to a PHP error, which might be happening in one of the Resource Loader modules, which are used on the search page.
- You can check that by viewing the links in the head part of the search page. They should display CSS styles. I am pretty sure that in your case at least one of these links will come back with a PHP error instead. 2003:CC:ABC3:5900:9D8D:DF0B:64E9:BBA1 (talk) 11:01, 1 November 2017 (UTC)

Missing "Tools" section after upgrading Mediawiki

Hey! Recently, the owner of The iPhone Wiki (saurik) upgraded the wiki to use Mediawiki 1.29.1 from 1.26. I noticed that when using the Jony skin, the "Tools" section is no longer present. Also happens on a test wiki using Mediawiki 1.28. I've spoken to the Jony skin creator and am trying to help him to update it but can't work out why it isn't working or how to fix it. I've tracked down the part of the code that enables the sidebar content but don't
see anything that has changed to break it. IAdam1n (talk) 17:09, 25 October 2017 (UTC)
Special:WantedCategories and Special:WantedTemplates
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Both of these list templates and categories that don't exist. Each tells you how many members link to them. Yet, many of them, when you look at them, don't have any linking pages at all. ISTM there should be a way to clear these out, but I can't seem to figure it out. I thought there would be a maintenance script that took care of this, but there either isn't one, or mine isn't working correctly. Txantimedia (talk) 18:36, 25 October 2017 (UTC)
- The date they say they were last updated is "recent"? Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 09:30, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
- @Ciencia Al Poder, they don't show the date they were last updated. Am I missing something? Txantimedia (talk) 16:14, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, run Manual:updateSpecialPages.php. You should put it in a cron to run regularly Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 19:03, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
- @Ciencia Al Poder, I thought all those maintenance scripts were already run on a schedule by the software. Do I have to cron every one of them? Txantimedia (talk) 20:42, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
- Running the update script didn't fix the problem. There are still numerous Templates with no links to them that show up as having links. Is there a doc somewhere that explains how this Special page works? Txantimedia (talk) 21:31, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
- I"ve been doing some research on this, and some things aren't making any sense at all. For example, I ran this query:Yet, my search bar says "Search approximated 3,394 pages". As you can see, there's a 98 count discrepancy.
mysql> select count(*) from vvfh_page; +----------+ | count(*) | +----------+ | 3296 | +----------+ 1 row in set (0.02 sec)
- When I ran this query, which was constructed from https://searchcode.com/file/127975127/includes/specials/SpecialWantedtemplates.php
class WantedTemplatesPage extends WantedQueryPage { function __construct( $name = 'Wantedtemplates' ) { parent::__construct( $name ); } function getQueryInfo() { return array ( 'tables' => array ( 'templatelinks', 'page' ), 'fields' => array ( 'tl_namespace AS namespace', 'tl_title AS title', 'COUNT(*) AS value' ), 'conds' => array ( 'page_title IS NULL', 'tl_namespace' => NS_TEMPLATE ), 'options' => array ( 'GROUP BY' => 'tl_namespace, tl_title' ), 'join_conds' => array ( 'page' => array ( 'LEFT JOIN', array ( 'page_namespace = tl_namespace', 'page_title = tl_title' ) ) ) ); } }
I got 668 rows. But, I have 409 WantedTemplates, according to Special:WantedTemplates. Perhaps it's because I didn't condition the query with NS_TEMPLATE? (I didn't know where or what that is.)select tl_namespace as namespace, tl_title as title, count(*) as value from vvfh_templatelinks left join vvfh_page on page_namespace=tl_namespace and page_title=tl_title where page_title is null group by tl_namespace, tl_title;
- I changed the query to look for page_title IS NOT NULL and got 1217 rows. Yet I supposedly have 3,394 pages.
- What I do know is that, when I check some of the wanted templates, there are zero pages linked to it, so that makes no sense at all. Txantimedia (talk) 17:54, 29 October 2017 (UTC)
- The number of pages is cached in the site_stats table. If the number is not correct, you can update it with Manual:initSiteStats.php
- You said when I check some of the wanted templates, there are zero pages linked to it, so that makes no sense at all.
- If Special:WhatLinksHere, on the template, doesn't list the pages it's linked from, you have a problem with the Job queue. Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 19:59, 29 October 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks, @Ciencia Al Poder. I ran the update, and that fixed the SiteStats problem. I ran the Job queue script, but I can't tell if it did anything. The log file is empty. Txantimedia (talk) 03:22, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
- if runJobs did't output anything, the script has probably caused a fatal error and you have PHP configured to hide all errors. See error reporting in Manual:How to debug Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 10:22, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
- Hmmm...I removed the full path from the line, but the error is all that matters anyway. I just ran it manually without writing to the log file, and it worked fine, no errors. So, I'll need to investigate why the job isn't running right. Thanks for the continued help, @Ciencia Al Poder
cat /var/log/runJobs.log Could not open input file: maintenance/runJobs.php
- Unfortunately, even after running it, Special:WantedTemplates is reporting incorrectly. For example, it lists Template:PageLang2 as a having 11 links. When I click on the 11 links link, it opens a page titled 'Pages that link to "Template:Pagelang2"', but that page lists zero linked pages.
- When I check Special:WantedCategories, it lists World Digital Library partners as a missing category, but when I check, there are no pages listed for that category. So the problem still exists, even after running runJobs.php. Txantimedia (talk) 17:47, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
- Is your wiki public so we can look at those pages? Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 21:05, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
- ^The Wiki is at, https://wiki.vvfh.org.
- Looking at the Wiki's API statistics query, there still appear to be a couple hundred remaining jobs. AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 06:42, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
- @AhmadF.Cheema, how do I find out what those jobs are and get them to complete? Txantimedia (talk) 00:12, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
- As mentioned above, jobs can be run through, runJobs.php. You can look at your API statistics query to see if the jobs get completed or not. Here the "jobs" field should reach almost 0 after running runJobs.php.
- If it doesn't, then it probably means there is some error blocking running jobs. Even without a log file, the errors should be displayed in your SSH terminal from where runJobs.php is run. AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 05:06, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
- I want to make sure I understand you correctly. I ran runJobs.php, then checked the API statistics query, and it shows 55 jobs. I ran it again. It finished very quickly. I still show 55 jobs in API statistics query. So, if I understand you correctly, this means there's an error somewhere. But runJobs.php isn't generating any errors, so the problem has to be somewhere else. I assume runJobs.php calls other maintenance scripts, so I'll take a look at that and see what happens when I run them manually.
- Am I think correctly? Txantimedia (talk) 23:15, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, that should be correct.
- Additionally, if you have access to phpMyAdmin, there would also be a
<wiki-prefix>_jobdatabase table. From here you can see which jobs are not completing. AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 07:07, 3 November 2017 (UTC) - All the jobs are deleteLinks jobs. They are primarily in the Template namespace (41 of the 44). (That's where I'm doing a ton of work, trying to clean things up.) Txantimedia (talk) 19:25, 4 November 2017 (UTC)
- I finally made progress on this. I ran maintenance/refreshLinks.php, and that cleared out a lot of Templates that had no pages linked to them but still showed up in WantedTemplates. Txantimedia (talk) 22:46, 10 November 2017 (UTC)
- I have made maintenance/refreshLinks.php a scheduled job, just like runJobs.php. Both run daily, and that helps to keep things cleaned up. Txantimedia (talk) 05:12, 13 November 2017 (UTC)
- refreshLinks.php shouldn't need to be run periodically. If links are wrong after some time, the problem is the job queue and you'll have more problems, like RecentChanges table not propery updated or watchlist emails not being sent. Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 10:10, 13 November 2017 (UTC)
- In general, there are 20 to 30 jobs in the queue, even after running runJobs.php. refreshLinks.php has resolved a lot of the issues I've been having with Special:Wanted not reporting correct information. I just ran runJobs.php, and there are 23 jobs in the queue. They are all deleteLinks jobs. Are you saying that this script is not being run? - /includes/jobqueue/jobs/DeleteLinksJob.php
- If so, what could be the cause?
- This is a default install of the wiki, and I haven't altered or customized any files. Why would those jobs still be sitting in the queue? Txantimedia (talk) 01:43, 14 November 2017 (UTC)
- If those jobs failed in the past, they may still be there. If they are old you delete them (specially after running refreshLinks.php). If you don't see more problems and all jobs are cleared when running runJobs.php, you won't need to run refreshLinks.php because it won't do anything useful. Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 10:37, 14 November 2017 (UTC)
- I ran runJobs. There were 17 jobs left in the db. I ran refreshLinks. The jobs didn't change. I deleted the jobs in the db. The API statistics query showed zero jobs. After a while, there were 5 jobs, according to the query. I ran runJobs again, and the number returned to zero.
- So, that appears to have fixed the problem, at least for now. Txantimedia (talk) 01:17, 15 November 2017 (UTC)
Is there a way to parse nested templates first?
Suppose page A is transcluded at page B, and page B is transcluded at page C. Is there a way to parse A before B at page C, by transcluding A at page B in a special way?
That is, is there some sort of prioritary transclusion command?
When is this useful? When A contains <onlyinclude>'s or, more generally, <section />'s to be read by Labeled Section Transclusion (the page where LST is called being C, as in {{#lst:B|title}} ).
After making some changes to sourcecode of LST, this would solve the issue of LST not being able to find <sections />'s that are in a template.

- Request deletion of an entry you started by adding {{delete}} or {{speedydelete}}, depending on the criteria. In the former case, there is also a "Nominate for Deletion" tab in the far left (last option under "Tools"). Tropicalkitty (talk) 05:17, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
Restore old functionality in Special:Allpages?
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
I've recently updated my wiki, and I notice that Special:Allpages was rewritten some time between 1.23 and 1.29. First, it now seems to display pages in alphabetical order running top-to-bottom left-to-right, rather than left-to-right top-to-bottom. That is, it fills the first column alphabetically, then moves to the second column when the first is full, etc., rather than filling the first row alphabetically, then moving to the second row when the first is full, etc. Second, when transcluded it doesn't collapse down as the previous version of Allpages did when there are a large number of pages on a wiki, and it doesn't even add page links as seen on the special page itself; it just displays the first 345 entries and then stops, with no pagination of any sort, or even an indication that not all pages are being displayed.
Are there configuration options for the new version of Allpages that can make it a little friendlier to work with when transcluded, and possibly options to revert to the old L-R T-B style of sorting? If not, is it possible to just straightforwardly use the old version of SpecialAllpages.php on 1.29 with some small adjustments? I tried just a straight replacement and received a PHP error, but I'm hoping the internal structure of Mediawiki hasn't changed so much as to make it utterly impossible without a full rewrite. Idran (talk) 02:09, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
- The new version is a plain list and uses CSS columns to partition the list into three columns.
- However, now it's easier to change with CSS, since the old style was a table which was less flexible. This CSS could return the old behavior:
- Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 09:26, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
.mw-allpages-body, .mw-prefixindex-body { columns: unset; -moz-columns: unset; -webkit-columns: unset; } .mw-allpages-chunk li { display: inline-block; width: 33%; } - I'm not sure how that returns the old "your wiki has more than the max pages value" behavior, which is honestly the more important aspect. Transcluding Allpages is now essentially useless if your wiki has more than 345 pages on it, because the pagination links aren't brought over to the transcluded page and the list no longer collapses when you exceed that. Is there a way to restore the "collapse to page ranges" functionality of the previous version, or to get the pagination links to display when the page is transcluded?
- Edit: I guess I'd also add a feature suggestion: make that CSS standard in Monobook, maybe even in base Mediawiki, so that Allpages now both easier to manipulate with CSS (and probably more friendly to screen readers I'd gather) and it's still easily human-readable. T-B L-R is not really very human-readable as a page index, regardless of what benefit is gained in rendering flexibility. Idran (talk) 12:16, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
Data missing after migration and update
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Greetings,
We had a 1.28 mediawiki that I just took over (new to mediawiki admin) and migrated to a new server (both 'nix, mysql). After things looked good, I updated to 1.29.1.
I noticed the recent changes were reset, in that it only showed changes made after the move. This felt odd (as I assume that's info kept in the database), but apart from the search index needed to be rebuilt, things looked OK.
However, a user has noted that on some pages, data revered back to edits last made in 2010. I can compare the new and old wikis, and see they are correct. Other pages (most?) contain more recent edits as expected.This may only be for one user, I'm not sure.
rebuildall.php seems to run without issue, but does not change these pages.
(new) wiki in question - http://antir.sca.wiki/
example page with issue - http://antir.sca.wiki/index.php?title=Grimwithshire
example issue page from old wiki - http://wiki.antir.sca.org/antirwiki/index.php?title=Grimwithshire
New
MediaWiki 1.29.1 PHP 5.6.30 (cgi-fcgi) MySQL 5.6.32-78.1 ICU 4.2.1
old
MediaWiki 1.28.0 PHP 5.6.31 (cgi-fcgi) MySQL 5.6.37-log
Suggestions? Good way to compare the content to see what's missing? Medwards98020 (talk) 03:23, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
- There's only one reason for this to happen: the database of the new wiki was made from an old backup of the old wiki.
- Special:Statistics contains "Page edits since An Tir Culturewiki was set up", which is just the last revision ID used on the database. This revision ID is incremented on each edit. If in the old wiki this number is higher than the new wiki, this also proves my theory. Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 09:18, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
- Statistics certainly seem to match what you say. Old wiki says 59,414, new says 59,069 and that's after a few additional edits.
- However, the backup I made myself as part of migrating the wiki, so I can't see how it could be old. However, in troubleshooting efforts, I may have run a repair on it, so that might have killed some things. I'll give that a try shortly. Medwards98020 (talk) 03:40, 27 October 2017 (UTC)
- Hmmm, restoring the current "old" DB (the one that shows 59,414) ends up with a statistics that shows 58,982 edits. I do note when I run the update it shows things like:

- One other tidbit - after the move, recent changes is empty. I don't know if that's normal after a migration / update or not. Medwards98020 (talk) 05:50, 27 October 2017 (UTC)
- Are you certainly sure you're backing up the right database?
- You can do some queries to the database to be sure you're targeting the right one.
- For example, to get the revision row of the page Grimwithshire from 16 June 2017:
select * from revision where rev_id = 57897;- On the old wiki but good database it should return one row. If you have set a table prefix, you may need to add it to the "revision" table (for example wiki_revision or similar). Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 09:24, 27 October 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for your continued help.
- On the old server, there are only two databases - one that's tiny (0.86 MB), and the wiki DB (727.75 MB). Of course on the new and old tiny database, that query returned an empty set. But it also returned an empty set on the old DB. Medwards98020 (talk) 14:25, 28 October 2017 (UTC)
- Also, running a search on the authors user ID (1155) shows just five revisions in each (old/new) database. Medwards98020 (talk) 14:45, 28 October 2017 (UTC)
- …aaand you certainly seem to have put me on the right track, I hope. Looks like there were some hidden databases. Still not confident on what is going on (as the DB I was using contains many recent edits), but hopefully we shall see soon. Medwards98020 (talk) 13:53, 29 October 2017 (UTC)
- LocalSettings.php contains the database server, database name, user and password to connect to the database. Check there to see if you're connecting to the right one. Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 16:13, 29 October 2017 (UTC)
- Just a (belated) follow up and thanks.
- After taking some time off from working on the issue, we were able to locate the database it was actually writing to, apparently, and it was not one that was listed in the CPanel interface.
- I was able to restore from backup dump provided to me, and it was just five edits shy of what the prior DB showed. Checking past the last revision, there were indeed five edits, which I was able to manually port over.
- Thanks much for your help on this issue, your confidence in your conclusion was certainly justified. It has been a frustrating learning curve to be sure, but I'm hopeful of keeping things in a tidier state for maintaining it and for whenever I hand this off down the road. A feature request: Adding an access key to Wikisource page namespace, to toggle the header and footer
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
I am posting this here because I couldn't find the feature request page on phabricator, unless I opened a ticket, assuming that tickets are only for software bugs.
Would it be possible to add an access key which would toggle open or close the header and footer in the page namespace? Currently, this feature is available on the enhanced editing toolbar with the use of a mouse, but since our work is keyboard intensive, this access key would be most helpful. The editors' gain is additional vertical screen space.
I perused the list of assigned keys of the Manual:Interface/Access keys and concluded that there are only two characters of the alphabet (g and m), and none of the numbers (0 to 9) assigned. If this is feasible, any available key assignment would do. — Ineuw talk 05:21, 26 October 2017 (UTC)

I wonder if it is possible to embedd that HTML in one of my MediaWiki pages and also force it to refresh?

We need 2 languages diferents, Spanish of Spain and the Spanish of Latinoamerica

Hello, I propose that in the wikipedia there should be 2 different languages for the Spanish, the Spanish of Spain and the Spanish of Latinoamerica since sometimes there are differences between both zones because the people do not base in the RAE but the says a majority
P.D: Pardon for the mistakes but I don't dominate the English :-) Ampv75 (talk) 01:19, 27 October 2017 (UTC)
- There's no reason to split efforts to solve minimal language differences like this.
- Anyway, this is not the right place to ask. You should ask on the w:es:Wikipedia:Café, since it would require a major consensus. Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 09:28, 27 October 2017 (UTC)
Wiki Farm Sharing Same Wiki Folder
My MediaWiki files are stored in a folder called /w and I use clean URLs to make /en/ act as my English site. I also have shared databases and uploads configured as well. My goal is to be able to add additional languages in separate folders (/pt/, /es/, ...) and they all share the same wiki core installation folder, to shave space and make updates across the board simultaneous. The issue I've come across is when users are editing files, or making other changes, they sometimes wander into the /w/ folder, regardless of the language. What is the best way to remedy this issue?
.htaccess:
RewriteRule ^/?en(/.*)?$ %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/w/index.php [L]

Is there a tag to hide text?
Is there a tag that hides text, but allows it to be transcluded? It is for use in combination with Extension:Labeled Section Transclusion. That is, the text will contain <section> tags, meaning that this cannot be achieved with a template (and certainly not m:template:void)
I know this can be done by combining <includeonly><noinclude>, but I was wondering if there's a cleaner way. nBarto (talk) 12:28, 27 October 2017 (UTC)

- Insufficient information to give a helpful answer...
- The 0 comes obviously from a variable initialized to 0, FALSE or maybe NULL, due to PHP implicit conversions. Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 10:23, 30 October 2017 (UTC)

Muchas gracias nuevamente. Mtorou (talk) 05:41, 30 October 2017 (UTC)

It would improve the user experience to have a searchbox, especially in those with several pages. Can it be added? JMGN (talk) 09:38, 30 October 2017 (UTC)

Wikitable Sortable not working on dates
For whatever reason, I can't get sortable tables to organize correctly if using a date format in a table (YYYY-MM-DD). Adding data-sort-type as number or date does not fix this. Example is at http://segaretro.org/Sega_Forever Could I get any help? Scarred Sun (talk) 10:54, 30 October 2017 (UTC)
- Although your Wikitable syntax works as expected on Wikipedia, however for some reason it doesn't on external Wikis.
- In your Wikitable code, you have all your dates preceded by a blank-space. A quick solution is to remove this blank-space from at-least one of your date entries. See if doing this helps. AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 12:03, 30 October 2017 (UTC)
- This worked as expected (dates properly sorting with or without leading spaces) in MediaWiki 1.26.2. We recently upgraded our internal wiki from 1.26.2 to 1.29.2 and now have this bug; leading spaces on any dates in a table cause those rows to sort incorrectly. Link an article Lead section

Hi,
I'd like to import some wikipedia article introductions to reference these articles in a webpage. How can I adress those Lead sections and get only its content.?
Many thanks 185.58.80.6 (talk) 16:58, 30 October 2017 (UTC)
- While transcluding entire articles from external wikis is a straightforward process (see Manual:$wgEnableScaryTranscluding), transcluding individual sections isn't.
- See the method mentioned at User:Peter17/Reasonably efficient interwiki transclusion#Proposed approach, maybe it still works. AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 18:41, 30 October 2017 (UTC)
Latin alphabet for Kazakh

As you may have heard, the Kazakh government are switching the language from Cyrillic to Latin. Any plans to switch kk.wiki over? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:2017_Kazakh_Latin_Alphabet.jpg Heepman1997 (talk) 06:08, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
- Welcome to the support desk for the MediaWiki software itself. For configuration questions of a specific website like "kk.wiki" you'll likely need to discuss on kk.wiki. Malyacko (talk) 09:34, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
- By kk.wiki, I meant kk.wikipedia.org (the Kazakh Wikipedia). I might ask there. Heepman1997 (talk) 09:38, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

mediawiki 1.28
i received DBQueryError when creating a new page Daniele ramon (talk) 20:03, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
- Have you already tried running update.php? AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 06:45, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
- thanks AhmadF for your help
- i run update.php now
- first output line is:
- 'Your composer.lock file is up to date with current dependencies!'
- what do you think?
- thanks daniele (Italy) Daniele ramon (talk) 07:33, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
- I think this is normal. 星耀晨曦 (talk) 08:12, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
- thanks 星耀晨曦
- update.php output line are a lot
- all lines seems to me correct
- may i cut and past it to you? Daniele ramon (talk) 08:45, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
- If the output lines are not showing any errors, then there shouldn't be any need to copy/paste the output.
- Are you still receiving the "DBQueryError" after running the update? AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 08:48, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
- yes AhmadF Daniele ramon (talk) 08:56, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
- is this an error?
- .site_stats table does not contain ss_total_views field. Daniele ramon (talk) 08:57, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
- here is my wiki
- wiki.tes.mi.it Daniele ramon (talk) 08:58, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
- The "site_stats" issue shouldn't be a problem.
- Just to make sure, disable (comment out) all extensions from your LocalSettings.php file, run update.php again and try again. This should rule out any errors related to extensions. AhmadF.Cheema (talk) 09:23, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
- just finished now commenting all extension
- for every comment, i run
- php update.php
- and
- service apache2 restart
- but i can't solve my problem
- some more patient? :-) Daniele ramon (talk) 10:46, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
- Hi there!
- You have not yet posted the exact error message. You should put the following code:
$wgShowExceptionDetails = true; $wgShowDBErrorBacktrace = true;
- at the end of your LocalSettings.php file. Afterwards, try creating a new page again and you should see more information on the error. This information is what you should copy and paste here. 2003:CC:ABC3:5900:B06B:9335:915B:BCA4 (talk) 10:58, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
- ok
- thank for your help
- i comented all extension
- i put the following code:at the end of your LocalSettings.php file
$wgShowExceptionDetails = true; $wgShowDBErrorBacktrace = true;
- the error :
- ------------------
- [fd5f13fa5dc844db452ae405] /index.php?search=create+new+page&title=Speciale%3ARicerca&go=Vai DBQueryError from line 1054 of /var/www/html/includes/libs/rdbms/database/Database.php: A database query error has occurred. Did you forget to run your application's database schema updater after upgrading?
- Query: SELECT page_id,page_namespace,page_title FROM `page`,`searchindex` WHERE (page_id=si_page) AND ( MATCH(si_title) AGAINST('+create +newu800 +page ' IN BOOLEAN MODE) ) AND page_namespace = '0' LIMIT 20
- Function: SearchMySQL::searchInternal
- Error: 144 Table './wiki@002ditsos/searchindex' is marked as crashed and last (automatic?) repair failed (localhost)
- ----------------
- if i don't comment all extension and i put the following code:at the end of your LocalSettings.php file
$wgShowExceptionDetails = true; $wgShowDBErrorBacktrace = true;
- the error is the same:
- DBQueryError
- thanks for your attention
- daniele from italy Daniele ramon (talk) 12:28, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
- Sure, the error is the same, but now you have more information. The relevant line is:
- Error: 144 Table './wiki@002ditsos/searchindex' is marked as crashed and last (automatic?) repair failed (localhost)
- In your MySQL database, the table searchindex is marked as crashed. That means that MySQL does not allow using it. You should repair that table.
- If you have PHPMyAdmin, you can use PHPMyAdmin to repair it. If you have access to MySQL in other ways (e.g. from the command line), you can use the command line to run a REPAIR query on the table. 2003:CC:ABC3:5900:D090:6457:6BD8:7FBD (talk) 12:38, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
- you are right
- now i know the corrupted table: it's 'searchindex'
- i opened mysql (command line); the incriminated table seems to be corrupted
- now i have to undestand how create a REPAIR query. I'm happy. I can't ask any more.
- i try to create a REPAIR query
- thanks
- daniele Daniele ramon (talk) 13:37, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
- When you are in MySQL on the command line, you can just do a
REPAIR TABLE searchindex;
- MySQL should then respond with the result of the repair query, e.g. telling you that it fixed the table. Or, if this for some reason did not work, that it could not fix it. 2003:CC:ABC3:5900:F942:50D1:619F:60EC (talk) 20:19, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
- thanks mysql> REPAIR TABLE searchindex;
- +-----------------------------+--------+----------+----------+
- | Table | Op | Msg_type | Msg_text |
- +-----------------------------+--------+----------+----------+
- | my_wikivirtuale.searchindex | repair | status | OK |
- +-----------------------------+--------+----------+----------+
- 1 row in set (0,00 sec)
- REPAIR TABLE fixed the problem?
- when i search a page, that do not exist, i received DBQueryError
- do i miss something?
- thanks daniele Daniele ramon (talk) 08:28, 3 November 2017 (UTC)
- Are you sure you have run the REPAIR statement on the right database? In your error message it says something about "Table ./wiki@002ditsos/searchindex" while you are speaking about "my_wikivirtuale.searchindex"... 2003:CC:ABC4:1700:8961:FAFD:9E4:986 (talk) 14:01, 3 November 2017 (UTC)
- mmm
- you are right
- i need check next week
- thanks and have you a good weekend Daniele ramon (talk) 14:33, 4 November 2017 (UTC)
