Extension:ToggleDisplay doesn't work for me.
Hi,
I am using mediawiki locally in my desktop and recently I've installed ToggleDisplay extension by following instructions in Extension:ToggleDisplay, but when I use it as
<toggledisplay>
This will be shown.
</toggledisplay>
any texts, even toggle links are not shown. The block of toggledisplay disappeared from the page.
I've spent two days to solve this problem, but no luck so far.
Does anyone have any idea?
I am using:
MediaWiki : 1.16.0
PHP : 5.3.3
mysql : 5.1.48

Nothing happens?
Hello,
So i copied mediawiki-1.16.0.tar.gz on my webserver, then i extracted everything to a mediawiki-1.16.0 folder and renamed it to wiki. Then i go to www.mysite.com/wiki and ofc there i click on "Please set up the wiki first." And it goes to /config/index.php and the installation page appears. But here is the thing: when i click on "Install MediaWiki" button - no matter what info i enter or even if i leave everything blank - it just jumps to my website homepage without css - so it looks ugly - and in the browser address bar it shows that its on "www.mysite.com/wiki/config/index.php". So it does not show me the error page when i click the install button - even if i dont complete any of the fields in the install form.
I must mention here i have no problems and it writes "Environment checked. You can install MediaWiki."

- Does your site have something like Cpanel that may reside at http://sitename.com/config/ ? Even if it is disabled, it may be mentioned in rewrite rules. Max Semenik 10:14, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
- I do have Cpanel, but there is no folder at sitename.com/config/. I think its a problem of permission, but i have no idea what :) - i'm not a server expert :( . I wrote you an e-mail with a link to my website, if you can take a look. Thank you for answering. 79.116.71.47 13:13, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
- This is so frustrating :( Nothing i try works... Does the installer need some folders with write permission? I've installed phpbb and wordpress with no problems, the server is administrated by a web server firm that has everything installed. Should i write them about this? Can Cpanel have some interaction with the installation of mediawiki? I'm lost :( 79.116.65.28 17:20, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

Expiration of pages
Is there a functionality in MediaWiki to give certain pages a expiration date?
We have some formal information, that needs to be validated on a regular bases.
Can MediaWiki send an email if a page is expired?
Regards, Johan Theunissen 213.34.49.75 (talk) 10:56, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Johan.
- did you find anything to help you with this?
- Thx
- Neil 115.70.218.126 05:58, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
- MediaWiki does not have a function to do this, and i don't know any extension, that can. Maybe you can use/find/create a bot who crawl the wiki pages and do things for you :) Florianschmidtwelzow (talk) 08:16, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
How to redirect from root directory http://examplex.com/Article to http://example.com/wiki/Article_title
I know using short URL up to root directory is bad. I installed MediaWiki in /w sub directory and change localsetting.php and .htaccess to /wiki as used in most wiki sites.
My site keep showing 404 Error page when I mistype http://example.com/Article_title. However, Wikipedia redirect this title to its internal path. e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/bash will be automatically redirected to w:en:Bash in 5 seconds.
How should I configure my site? 175.100.127.123 (talk) 15:26, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
- Set ErrorDocument 404 in Apache config or .htaccess to point to redirection page which can be either PHP script that redirects to the right page with <meta http-equiv="Refresh" content="5; URL=http://example.com/wiki/foobar">, or a static HTML page that does the same with JS. Problems with Copy&Paste
- mediawiki 1.16.0
- php 5.2.11 (cgi)
- database: MySql 4.1.22-log
- IE 8
Since i was updating from 1.15.1 to 1.16 and now working with vector skin i have problems with copy&paste actions. For example: http://www.mediadesign-group-server.de/c_helmstedt-wiki/index.php?title=Grasleben&action=edit - if you scroll down the editing-window, you will not be able to mark any text to copy. May someone be able to help me? Mirko Marhenke (talk) 18:22, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
- Does nobody have an idea about that problem? Some additional info. When you edit textes in the wikipedia and try to abort this by closing the window an alert says something like "do you really want to close that window. data will be lost...". But in my wiki it does not. Maybe a script missing? Djmirko 10:16, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
- Still have this f****** Problem. Are everybody elses wikis (1.16.0) running without these probs? 91.3.55.226 16:29, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
- I can copy paste fine (of course this is with firefox. I don't have IE installed). Your issue with the edit warning not popping out sounds like you might have extension:UsabilityInitiative mis-configured (but thats just a guess). Bawolff 02:06, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
- I already found out how to fix that problem with the editwarning. But i still have the problem (and yes, i am working with IE8) with copy&paste. If you scroll down the editing-window, you will not be able to mark any text to copy. This is really strange, because on the german wikipedia everything (even with IE8) is fine but not so on my wiki :-( Djmirko 16:39, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
Short URL with no root access steps produce no Mediawiki
Manual:Short URL/wiki/Page title -- no root access gives instructions that don't work for me at ICDSoft. If somebody will step me through the fix, I will fix the steps at the page.
I added the required lines to .htaccess in the web root and to LocalSettings.php in the Mediawiki root.
The .htaccess additions did nothing at all. The LocalSettings.php additions made it so that when I browsed from front page to the "w" folder, the URL changed to "wiki/Main_Page", but the page displayed no change (it still displayed the front page).
My configuration:
home/aaajack/www/www/index.php Web root path home/aaajack/www/www/en/w/index.php Mediawiki path
My .htaccess additions:
RewriteRule ^en/wiki/(.*)$ /en/w/index.php?title=$1 [PT,L,QSA] RewriteRule ^en/wiki/*$ /en/w/index.php [L,QSA]
My LocalSettings additions:
$wgScriptPath = "/en/w"; # Physical path (right part of first rewrite rule). $wgArticlePath = "/en/wiki/$1"; # Virtual path (left part of first rewrite rule). MUST be DIFFERENT from the path set above ($wgScriptPath)! $wgUsePathInfo = true; 98.177.237.129 (talk) 03:12, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
- The ICDSoft tech support folks told me to put the .htaccess additions before my other additions, like this:
# Mediawiki Short_URLs per # http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Short_URL/wiki/Page_title_--_no_root_access RewriteRule ^en/wiki/(.*)$ /en/w/index.php?title=$1 [PT,L,QSA] RewriteRule ^en/wiki/*$ /en/w/index.php [L,QSA] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d RewriteRule ^.*$ - [L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f RewriteRule ^.*$ - [L] RewriteRule ^.*$ index.php [L]- That made the steps work. I will note it. 98.177.237.129 03:57, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
Interwiki link
Is it possible to make an interwiki link just on one part of a page.
I have a page with a lot of chapter, I just want make a link on the chapter 2. By clicking on the link, you can't see the others chapters. Balbitus (talk) 08:20, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
- What you probably want is to split your pages up in to a bunch of templates, then transclude all the chapters onto one page. This allows you to link directly to an individual chapter, or to the page with all the chapters. Alternatively you can use page name#section_name syntax to link half way down a page. Bawolff 20:32, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
- Okay, thank you for you quick answer, I'll test that!
- Edit : Yeah That's exactly what I wanted ! Thank you a lot ! Balbitus 07:13, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
Statistics for File Downloads
I cant see any statistics on how many times a file was downloaded. I link my files directly so the site statistics for the file wont work.
Where can I find these information or is there any extension? 193.196.64.2 (talk) 10:08, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
- Typically this is done on the webserver level not at the mediawiki level. You can process your apache access_log yourself, or I'm sure there is some script somewhere on the internet that will do that for you. Bawolff 20:28, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
- It would be very handy if this was some kind of feature. Indeed, you could just search for a script for it.
- But some members of the mediawiki really want to know how many times 'their' files were downloaded. And so how popular their files are. 81.83.24.71 10:23, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
- Its not really possible for mediawiki to keep track of file downloads, since mediawiki is not involved (unless you're using img_auth). When you download an image, apache (or whatever webserver) just finds the image and sends it. It doesn't notify mediawiki that its sending you the image. Bawolff 23:46, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
TinyMCE in Mediawiki
Hello everyone, two message in one day... I'm shamefull
Now I have a question with WYSIWYG Editors. I want to implement TinyMCE in my mediawiki. I read the page about is implementation. So I download the wysiwyg.patch but then the tutorial talk about some commands I have to do... but this is linux commands and my mediawiki is on a windows server so how can I integrate the patch or any others files which can install TinyMCE on my mediawiki?
If you think any other WYSIWYG editors is better than TinyMCE. Feel free to say it and I'll test it! Balbitus (talk) 10:43, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
- What Linux commands are you refering to? At Extension:TinyMCE MW#Installation I see only code that should be added to LocalSettings.php and no shell commands. Max Semenik 11:17, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
- I had a wrong or a old page. With your page I've been able to add TinyMCE. But now I have an issue ! TinyMCE break all my tab write in wiki text.
- Now I have this : {| class="wikitable" width="100%" align="center" |+ |- ! scope=col | Application Information ! scope=col | Documents |- | width="50%" | Applicat Balbitus 12:47, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
Upload a file from the edit page
On my MediaWiki setup, an Intranet MediaWiki, I'd like to have a button in the edit page that when clicked, open a popup page or popup div and allow the user to browse AND upload a file so it is easier to insert the specified file in his page/article...
To add a file, you currently have to go on the upload page, upload your file, remember the file name and then create your article and remember the file name so you can add it in your page.
Isn't there a easier way of doing this? Like adding file directly FROM the edit page? 24.226.145.73 (talk) 13:32, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
Taxobox
Ok, so on my page i enter:

BUT it shows : Format:Taxobox
Why is this? Is there an extension i need to install? I've seen this question asked before but the answer was to copy the css from the common.css templete on this site. But that does not work for me. Can someone please explain how a Taxobox works? Thank you. 79.119.212.236 (talk) 20:05, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
- Its a template. See help:templates. To make it work you need to copy it (and its dependencies) from enwikipedia page w:template:taxobox. Typically you'd use w:special:export to do this. Bawolff 20:27, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you Bawolff for helping me understand templates - i familiarized with them and made some simple ones myself. I did export the template:taxobox from enwikipedia but when i imported i got a lot of errors like:
Warning: xml_parse() [function.xml-parse]: Unable to call handler out_() in /home/site/public_html/wiki/includes/Import.php on line 437- I installed ParserFunctions but when i use it, my wiki crashes. I'm going to study more about this things tomorrow and i'll return here if i still have questions after i read all the User Help. 79.119.212.236 22:31, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
- I'm a happy man Bawolff! All thanks to you - Thanks a gazzilion times!! Taxobox - up and ready!! And i've learned how to import/export!
- The warning was because i had to erase the <restriction> elements from the xml and the extension ParserFunctions crashed because i was downloading the trunk not the version for my mediawiki version. And now everything looks great - Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction - I'll celebrate tonight in your honor good sir! 79.116.69.100 08:55, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry for reopen, Im confused, I wanna insert The template Taxobox in my local site, or maybe create a infobox taxonomy. i Try export from w:en:Special:Export/Template:Taxobox but i think is not complete, there are a special step to get dependencies? Yermandu 04:52, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
- You probably need to mark the box "Include templates" in Special:Export. Hamilton Abreu 23:43, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi! I've been doing some CMSs and forums so far, I'm new in wikis. Running: MediaWiki 1.16 Apache server: PHP 5.2.14, MySQL 5.0.90 As almost everyone, I've set up short URLs (no root access). Javascript stopped working 1.17
Hi. On GrandTheftWiki, since upgrading to 1.17, our common.js has stopped loading into pages - no javascript is loading at all. This means no collapsible tables, analytics tracking or WikEd toolbar. We've made no relevant configuration changes, and userjs is off. I can't find any documentation on how to re-enable Javascript, and purging the common.js page had no effect. Gboyers (talk) 01:50, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
- Something with ResourceLoader -- Bryan (talk|commons) 19:09, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
- It loaded for me, your pages contain <script src="/load.php?debug=true&lang=en-gb&modules=site&only=scripts&skin=vector&version=20101105T185320Z"></script>, which loads Common.js[1] So it probably just doesn't work properly. Max Semenik 19:26, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
- That's the thing - everything worked before, and Common.js hasn't changed. Only the upgrade to v1.17 and ResourceLoader happened. I tried reverting to an older version of Common.js with no change.
- Even though the script tag is there, and is correct, the JS does not run in the browser. I'm assuming there's a conflict somewhere.
- It's not just Common.js that doesn't work - it's any javascript.
- Examples of JavaScript no longer working are Preferences (no tabs), editing any page (no toolbar), and collabpsible tables (at the bottom).
- An amount of CSS has also stopped working - including the diff colouring (for which I had to add some css myself to Common.css, which worked). Gboyers 23:39, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
- In your wiki's HTML, I see:
<script src="http://www.grandtheftwiki.com/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Common.js&usemsgcache=yes&ctype=text/JavaScript"></script>
- How did that get there? The URL MediaWiki outputs has
text/javascript(in lowercase) and has&action=rawin it somewhere. If you added this to try to fix the bug, it only made it worse. - Also, which revision of 1.17 are you running? Your Special:Version won't tell me. Catrope 09:57, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
- I added that line as an attempt to get some JavaScript to run, but it didn't help.
- The issue was that debug mode was enabled, and disabling it made it both CSS and JS work again immediately. Gboyers 20:51, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
- Just an addendum: I don't know why, but for some reason I had to set $wgResourceLoaderDebug to true to get JS and CSS working in the latest nightly build. 70.68.162.184 19:44, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
- Do you mean with "not working" that you don't see how/where it is loaded or that the actual functions you have in Common.js don't work ?
- Functions like LinkFA and hasClass (which you have in Common.js) work fine on your wiki when I try them from the javascript console.
- PS: The "debug=false" in the link overrides $wgResourceLoaderDebug, that way you can test both without having to mess in LocalSettings.php Krinkle 01:47, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
- uh. i still can't get this common.js to load. i tried disabling $wgResourceLoaderDebug and enabling, tried running debug to make some sense of what's causing it, but i'm having no luck.
- MediaWiki 1.17.0
- PHP 5.3.6 (cgi-fcgi)
- MySQL 5.0.24-community-nt 12.46.139.200 23:43, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
- I found that there was an asterisk * appended to the <style> tag in the Vector skin, just before the closing quotes. With debug off, load.php serves up nothing (so we get no custom styles). With debug on, it works fine. Something fishy is going on. Gboyers 23:45, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
- Gboyers - so the custom styles (and even scripts in Common.js) works with debug on in vector skin? could you tell me how to set the debug on? 12.46.139.200 17:43, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
- In your LocalSettings.php you just need to add:
- $wgResourceLoaderDebug = true; Gboyers 18:17, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
- I can confirm this behavior.
- Mediawiki 1.17 with FCKEditor extension (which uses javascript) does only work with
- $wgResourceLoaderDebug = true;
- Apart from FCKEditor, this is a normal mediawiki installation without special modifications.
- The installation version was 1.13 or 1.14 and upgraded from 1.16 to 1.17 currently. Philipp 11:16, 11 August 2011 (UTC)
- Is there any news to this problem yet? Philipp 09:18, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
- Gboyers - so the custom styles (and even scripts in Common.js) works with debug on in vector skin? could you tell me how to set the debug on? 12.46.139.200 17:43, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

Philipp 09:18, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
- Could you clarify that, when you reported the problem, was the problem that you can't see where/how it's loaded or that the functionality inside is not loaded ?
- ResourceLoader combines and minifies resources to save bandwidth http requests, enabling debug mode is, well, for debugging. Please elaborate on what the problem is, what goes wrong if you don't set "
$wgResourceLoaderDebug = true;" ? By explaining that and allowing us to verify it it will enable the developer improve the software and fix the problems, right now your site is loading slower than it has to be because it's running in debug mode. Krinkle 05:43, 5 August 2011 (UTC)- Sure. This is as far as I have got in the troubleshooting. For some reason, ALL of the load.php HTML style tags always have an asterisk at the end of the URL, as here:
<link rel="stylesheet" href="/load.php?debug=false&lang=en-gb&modules=mediawiki.legacy.commonPrint%2Cshared%7Cskins.vector&only=styles&skin=vector&*" />- For the load.php URL that loads Mediawiki:Vector.css, this was a problem. It seems that with debug=false, the URL (with the asterisk) provided null output. With debug=true, it provided the expected debug indented output. With the asterisk manually removed from the URL, it worked both times.
- The effect this has was intermittent. On some page loads, the CSS would load, on others it wouldn't. I initially thought it was a timeout or 403 but enabling debug solved the problem and it all works all the time.
- Again - I'm not 100% sure as to the cause, or if this applies to anyone else, but that's just the quick dirty fix that made it work for me. Gboyers 15:18, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
- Did you get a resolution on this? I am having the same problem. For me, it is both JS and CSS files that seem to get the asterisk causing a 500 Server Error.
- When I copy & paste the included URLs into their own window, I can reproduce this 500 error. But when I remove the asterisk from the URL, everything works fine.
- If Krinkle's reply below is to be believed, then maybe it's a .htaccess problem? 18.111.58.13 19:52, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
- I think it might have had something to do with our wiki farm setup, where I had been editing the apache includes. I changed back to using regular .htaccess and that seems to have sorted a number of issues. Gboyers 03:20, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
- The asterisk at the end is harmless and doesn't have anything to do with your issue. It's a security fix for old versions of Internet Explorer to avoid security problems. Catrope and Tim_Starling can tell you more about that.
- Could you link to the url that is causing the null output ?
- Have you removed the part from your install ? It's not supposed to be there and doesn't work. Krinkle 22:43, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

WYSIWYG editor / Extension tables
Hello everyone,
Today I have a little question ! Does anyone knows an extension, WYSIWYG editor or anything else that could simplify the entry of tables?
I have tested TinyMCE but it don't help me with the tabs, I have a lot of excel sheet to put in my mediawiki and it's take me too much time to input a tables with wiki text. I have also some colors in the excel sheet so if the extension take also in charge the font color and the backgroung color of a raw it will be fantastic ! Balbitus (talk) 13:45, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

Where should I highlight a wiki collaboration project?
I have, together with some others, put together a proposal for a wiki Q&A site called WikiSpeedia. The goal is to provide help and community for experts and moderators across a variety of wiki platforms.
I think this could be of great benefit to MediaWiki user's and other people with a passion for sharing information, whether publically or behind company firewalls. Here's my question: where can I highlight this where it will be effective but not draw disapproval? Note: there's no money involved so there is nothing to sell except a free exchange of information. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Unnamed div surrounding the table of contents
Alright, so I have an unnamed div wrapped around the table of contents, and it has its own stylesheet. You can see how this might be a problem, as it prevents me from applying my own styling to it. However, I can't find it in the code. Does anyone know where it is, or how I can change its setup? I'm desperate for help, here.

Can new mediawiki pages be created from content based on an external website via RSS?
I am looking into whether new mediwiki pages can be created from content created on another website and then sent via RSS to mediawiki.
Is this possible?
The process i would like to be able to achieve is as follows:
1. New page created on existing website. 2. New content is passed to Mediawiki to make use of its categorisation and wiki linking. 3. New content needs to be able to be placed in a specific category or multiple categories if it meets the criteria. 4. Update is made on existing external website showing a link to the newly generated Mediawiki content.
Is this possible?
If RSS linking is not possible then is there another method of transport that can be used to link the external site to Mediawiki? It seems easier to export content from Mediawiki than to import. Is this correct?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance,

Hi all, I hope someone can help.
Here is an example of an error that has started happening when I try to upload an image on my wiki:

This message also appears under warnings:

These errors never used to happen and I found I could upload just fine.

Extracting user email
Hi, I am an admin at a wiki. How do I extract a user's email address from my database? It says it stored as a [BLOB - 22B]. There were some spammers who registered their email and I'd like to report their emails. Bluesoju (talk) 11:52, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

ampersand doesn't work on page names anymore ?
Since the upgrade to 1.16, page names (and only page names) containing an ampersand character doesn't show the ampersand, but the code instead. For example, http://www.soundamental.org/index.php/Jam_&_Spoon (one can see "Jam & amp ; Spoon" instead of the usual "Jam & Spoon" from last version above the red line Is there a way to correct this ? a mySQL request ? Category does not contain links to their pages
My configuration:
MediaWiki 1.16 | PHP 5.1.6 | SQLite
The problem is that when viewing a category does not display pages that are in this category. However, if you browse the list of categories, in it for each category in brackets indicates the number of pages in her inbox. When you install any errors have occurred. Everything else works perfectly.
Many thanks! 81.30.54.82 (talk) 13:52, 10 November 2010 (UTC)

Auto create account / auto login
Hy,
I'm trying since too many hours to instal FBConnect with two difficulties: finding compatible mediawiki with this extension, and finding how to make it works, and verifying the good version of the facebook SDK...
According that I already have code and sources from facebook for database query and login, I would like to find how create automaticaly an account for a facebook visitor.
However I don't find the good page to explain me this :p
I would like also to verify the login (facebook or my site ID(1)) during the loading of the userlogin.php template, and if user is connected (ID(1):facebook or my site), I would like to get corresponding wiki user ID(2) in the database to send a "connect this ID" : how to send this login with such an ID(2).
Thanks for my computer which is afraid by the proximity of the window :p Lamidesbetes (talk) 18:50, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

- I got the ID(1), no ID(2) corresponding to this ID1:

I have seen that MediaWiki has functionality to export pages, but I want to export the contents of the entire wiki, including all users, categories, images, links, history, etc not just a few pages at a time. Ashleyk (talk) 08:08, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

Content encoding error in load.php (forced gzip?)
Hello!
I am now in a process of upgrading my MediaWiki from an older 1.17alpha (at http://www.tiptheplanet.com/) to newer r76881 (at http://new.tiptheplanet.com).
As you can see on these links, the first one works perfectly, the second, not so much. The faulty feature introduced in newer revisions is ResourceLoader (load.php), which fails to load in any browser, leaving the site without any styles or scripts.
<code>load.php</code> sends HTTP 200, and everything seems to be ok, but no browser can read the contents, giving such errors in major browsers:
*Content Encoding Error: The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression. (in Firefox)
*Failed to load resource (in Safari and Chrome consoles)
As an example, you can have a look at .
I have also seen a bug filled at bugzilla:25667, but it hasn't been resolved yet.
Thanks for your time, and for, all in all, a great wiki software! I hope someone can help me with that issue, thanks! Holek (talk) 14:20, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

:Unfortunately, this feature has not been implemented in MediaWiki. You'll probably need to implement it yourself -- the best places to look are <tt>includes/ProtectionForm.php</tt> and in <tt>includes/api/ApiProtect.php</tt>. == (Resolved)Are there forbidden character sequences that can cause 404 errors? ==
Hi! Here's my Special:Version info
<pre>Product Version
MediaWiki 1.15.1
PHP 5.2.14 (cgi-fcgi)
MySQL 5.1.39-log
On my MediaWiki (http://pj.freefaculty.org/cgi-bin/mw), everything works fine, except, I started to get 404 errors, but only when I entered some magic character string. I was writing about Linux file permissions and I pasted in some text output from a Linux terminal and after submitting that to the wiki, either by preview or save, the error message says:
Not Found The requested URL /cgi-bin/mw/index.php was not found on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
I went back to the edit window and gradually cut out material until I found the thing causing the problem. This one line in the text of my wiki message causes that 404 error.
drwxr-xr-x 112 root root 112 Nov 18 17:21 ..
I've come here to test your wiki, and that line does not cause the 404 crash. So I'm quite stumped and have to ask for your help. If I put a blank space anywhere between the first 5 characters, there is no trouble. For example, this is OK
d rwxr-xr-x 112 root root 112 Nov 18 17:21 ..
I'm baffled. I wish you could help me.
Here's an even worse part. Once a Wiki page is saved with that destructive string, then the page cannot be opened or edited, so it can never be fixed or deleted.

- Thats one of the more weird issues I've ever heard of.
- I think its just the phrase "drwxr" appearing in the output causing this. I think it might be your webserver, because http://pj.freefaculty.org/cgi-bin/mw/api.php?action=help&requestid=drwxr causes the issue, which doesn't really invoke much of mediawiki at all. You might want to try putting just a plain html document containing "drwxr" (and perhaps a plain php document outputting just that) to try and see if its a web server or php issue. Bawolff 03:46, 22 November 2010 (UTC)
- You are on the money. It has to be something wrong on dreamhost.
- I put up an html file with only the magic characters:
$ cat testbadfile.html <html> <body> drwxr </body> </html>
- And guess what? When you browse http://pj.freefaculty.org/testbadfile.html
Not Found The requested URL /testbadfile.html was not found on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
- I will see about reporting this to the server administrators.
- Thanks for the idea. 24.124.5.113 22:59, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
- I got to the bottom of this issue on Dreamhost.com. They are running the 'Apache "mod_security" module. The module scans incoming and outgoing documents to detect/block web attacks. It guards against is a trojan horse attack through which the user tries to retrieve information about a file system.
- If
- "drwxr" or
- "uid" or
- "gid" appear in a page...
- ...even a static page, then mod_security will block that display for fear somebody has tried to snoop into the system.
- I have been asking if there is a way to create a special exception to this policy for a particular web page, but have not found a way. It is easy to exempt a particular IP client from mod_security, but not so easy to customize the particular phrases for which it scans. If this were convenient or easy to fix, I expect we would see more on how to do it. As it is, I see only frightening comments which indicate that customizing mod_security is even more difficult than customizing mod_rewrite, and even then, I'd have to be root to get around the problem.
- And here's the worst part of the whole thing. The mod_security system intentionally gives back a vague/misleading error message in order to prevent the attacker from knowing that mod_security has thwarted them. All in all, this makes it almost impossible to be a "part time" web page writer.
- My effort to write a little note about the meaning of "ls -la" on Linux has cost me about 12 hours of exploration. 129.237.46.125 15:57, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
- That seems like a rather stupid security system...
- As a hack, you could add an invisible unicode character between the drwxrwx so the filter doesn't get triggered.
- For example
drwx‌rwx(Which looks identical: drwxrwx) probably will work [2]. - Cheers. Bawolff 20:12, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
- I could not upload an image named tracert.gif. This was a screenshot of output of the tracert command. After renaming it to trace-rt.gif, everything was OK. This makes me think that O.S. commands and reserved words are forbidden. This might prevent certain types of attacks on the wiki. Nbauers 14:33, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
- Ask your hosts's support about their mod_security settings. While some stuff like prohibition on certain file names can be understandable (although stupid), some "smart" hosts prohibit people to post the word "select" to the wiki (or forum). Which is kinda like a preventative murder to save someone from being killed by criminals. Max Semenik 15:12, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks. The problem has another twist. The file upload succeed but now I can't access the file to use it or delete it. I think I can work out how to get rid of it with ftp and MySQL table access. To err is human. To really foul things up, you need a computer. Nbauers 13:32, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

sqlite : installation error : Enter a valid data directory
Hello,
I'm trying to run a local mediawiki (last ubuntu, mediawiki 1.16.0, php 5.3.3-1ubuntu9.1 )
When I complete the installation script (http://localhost/wiki/config/index.php), I get an error "Enter a valid data directory" in front of SQLite-specific options -> SQLite data directory
I wrote /home/my_user_name/mediawiki where mediawiki has attributes chmod 777
I don't understand whats wrong...
It's not the installation, it works when I use a specific other directory (on my ntfs drive, without any aditionnal setting...) (but not on my ntfs drive on my trucrypt partition... I don't understand...)
Any idea ?

But (there is always a but...) when users try to upload XML file (it is teachers doc courses for their students), they can't with the warning text : This file contain HTML code or script...
Despite the fact that xml is added to $wgFileExtensions and not in the blacklist file.
How can I allow those upload of xml files ?
Thanks in adavance.
jh 193.52.16.15 (talk) 08:02, 24 November 2010 (UTC) I answer to myself :
This was because in the function detectScript (in includes/specials/SpecialUpload.php), the system verify the entire uploaded file to find some HTML tags which are '<a href', '<body', '<head', '<html', '<img', '<pre', '<script' and '<table'. And in the XML file to uploaded there was a <PRENOM> (First name in French) tag.
To fix the problem I change '<pre' to '<pre>' so that it's only real <pre> tag which cause the problem. Not exhaustive manner of course but it works for this case. 193.52.16.15 08:47, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

Mediawiki displaying strange tags.
Hi,
platform: Windows 7 mw ver: 1.16.0 xampp ver: 1.7.2 php ver: 5.3.0 mysql ver: 5.1.37
To put long story short, i have downloaded the latest xml dump enwiki-20101011-pages-meta-current.xml.bz2 and imported it to MW by mwdumper.jar. Everything looks fine during the import process. However, when i review my wiki pages, there are strange tag displayed, such as other uses, see {{#if:|:{}............see the screen shot below:
There are also some useful information missing, for example when i search "Hong kong" in the normal wiki, a geographical coordinates "Coordinates: 22°16′42″N 114°9′32″E" is displayed. But in my own wiki, seems that the information is replaced by something like "<a href="/wiki/index.php?title=Template:Coord&action=edit&redlink=1" class="new" title="Template:Coord (page does not exist)">Template:Coord</a>" (sounds like i need to somehow "install" a coord template to display this?) .
I am sorry that i am newbie to wiki, can anybody point me to the right direction or give me some hints that what is going wrong? I wish to build my own wiki that looks the same as the public one.
Thank you very much. Waterfallbay (talk) 17:52, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

Hyperlink To Files On A Server
How do you hyperlink from within MediaWiki to a file on a server within your network?
I'm finding mixed suggestions on how to do this, but cannot find the proper way as I keep getting errors no matter how I do it.
These are the suggestions I have come across;
[file://server name/folder/folder/file] name/folder/folder/file \\server name\folder\folder\file

- There's already a table called "user" in your database. If it's left over from something you don't need, you can remove it; otherwise, you should either make another database or use a database prefix. —Emufarmers(T|C) 20:44, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

- The installer checks for existence of tables called `cur` or `revision`. Your database appear to have neither, so the installer attemts to create the DB from scratch and fails because you have other MediaWiki tables. This is not a bug, because you don't need your old database without these tables. Max Semenik 14:00, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

RESOLVED - Error 404 - Object not found. Internet access to wiki
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Hello!
I was able to setup a working wiki, accesible localy on the home computer. When I try to access the page over the Internet, I get a Error 404 - object not found error. I guess it has to do with som kind of file-atributes, but I don't know what. Localsetting or some kind of httpd?
The host is running a cuple of virtual hosts that is working fine. I have added one more to point to the right directory:
<VirtualHost *:80> ServerName klimatwiki ServerAlias wiki.hal1.se DocumentRoot C:/xampp/htdocs/mediawiki/ </VirtualHost>
I have also added this to http.conf in apache:
<Directory "C:\xampp\htdocs\mediawiki">
Order Deny,Allow Allow from all
Options FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride None Order deny, allow allow from all
</Directory>
Adres: http://wiki.hal1.se/wiki/Huvudsida
Conf: Apache/2.2.11 (Win32) DAV/2 mod_ssl/2.2.11 OpenSSL/0.9.8i PHP/5.2.9
Would be most thankful for any suggestions to solve this! 213.114.173.20 (talk) 15:35, 28 November 2010 (UTC)
- 404 means file not found. If it was a permission problem you'd probably get a 403 forbidden.
- Appears to be a re-write rule problem. Your $wgArticlePath is set in such a way to redirect to a directory that doesn't exist (for example, without redirection http://wiki.hal1.se/index.php?title=Main_Page&action=view works) It also thinks the style directory is somewhere other then it is, so there is probably a mismatch between what is in LocalSettings.php (for $wgArticlePath type variables) and what you have in your apache config. Bawolff 12:27, 29 November 2010 (UTC)
- Hello again!
- Thanks for the answer! I decided to try everything from the top again, but wirh the same problem. The link you provided still seems to work through, with no stylesheet.
- This is how I did it, would be nice if you or anybode else could tell me where I'm doing something wrong.
- I have a working installation of xampp with both a traditional html-site and a php joomla site, both configured as virtual hosts.
- Their config in httpd.conf is:
- "<VirtualHost *:80>
- ServerName hal1.se
- ServerAlias hal1.se www.hal1.se
- DocumentRoot C:/Hemsidan
- </VirtualHost>
- <VirtualHost *:80>
- ServerName lekmera.nu
- ServerAlias lekmera.nu *.lekmera.nu
- DocumentRoot C:/xampp/htdocs/installation
- </VirtualHost>"
- I downloaded and extracted the latest version of mediawiki in C:/xampp/htdocs/mediawiki. Used the adress http://localhost/mediawiki to access the setup. Did the config (all basic, no email-functions at all) Copied the localsettings-file to the right directory and followed the link to my new wiki. Everyting seems to work fine.
- The I added another virtual host in my apache http.conf.
- "<VirtualHost *:80>
- ServerName wiki.hal1.se
- ServerAlias wiki.hal1.se
- DocumentRoot C:/xampp/htdocs/mediawiki
- </VirtualHost>"
- Then I restarted apache and tried to access http://wiki.hal1.se and get the Error 404 - object not found message.
- Is there some part of the configuration I've missed?
- Thanks in advance!

- You need to add some things to LocalSettings.php. (Since mediawiki needs to know the path its accessed from, and you changed that since you first configuring mediawiki) Specificly
- $wgScriptPath should be $wgScriptPath= ; (from your description, its probably currently set to something like

How to remove ns name from page title?
MW 1.16.0 PHP 5.3.0 MySQL 5.1.35
Is there a way how to do so? I have already tested Extension:HideNamespace and Extension:Editheader - both seems not to work. The problem is, that ns name is not in span in H1 title of the page, thus only way to hide it completely and replace it by another h1 edited in wikitext. But this takes problems with browser interpretations of such rule (i.e. IE). Juandev (talk) 16:40, 28 November 2010 (UTC)
(Resolved) wfRunHooks error... probably a configuration error on my part.
Hi all,
Just moved a wiki from one server to another, and upgraded at the same time to 1.16. Here's the scoop.
- Old server - Win 2003, PHP 5.1.4 (isapi), Mediawiki 1.12.0, MySQL 5.1.41-community-log
- New server - Mac OSX Server 10.6.5 (snow leopard), PHP 5.3.3 (apache2handler), Mediawiki 1.16.0, mySQL 5.0.91-log
- URL - http://wiki2.grinnellwiki.com
When saving edits to pages, the following error stream pops up;

I checked out line 2099 of Article.php, and it looks like this;
- wfRunHooks( 'ArticleSaveComplete', array( &$this, &$user, $text, $summary, $flags & EDIT_MINOR, null, null, &$flags, $revision, &$status, $baseRevId ) );
Here's what looks to be the code from SMW_Hooks.php that's being called. Looks like it's *trying* to return "true" :-)
- /**
- * This method will be called after an article is saved after
- * editing. It stores the semantic properties in the database.
- * One could consider creating an object for deferred saving
- * as used in other places of MediaWiki.
- */
- function smwfSaveHook(&$article, &$user, &$text) {
- SMWFactbox::storeData(smwfIsSemanticsProcessed($article->getTitle()->getNamespace()));
- return true; // always return true, in order not to stop MW's hook processing!
- }
Any ideas? I did a little searching before posting this, but feel free to point me at a thread if I missed it.
Thanks in advance,

- Took a walk and figured out what was going on. The SemanticMediawiki and SemanticForms extensions were the problem. I commented them out of the LocalSettings.php file and all is good now. I'll leave this up just in case somebody else runs into the problem. Note to you page-editors, feel free to take this down if it's inappropriate... Oconnorstp 23:40, 28 November 2010 (UTC)
- You probably don't have to disable the extensions: they should work if you upgrade them to their 1.16 versions. (Ideally, you should upgrade all your extensions when you upgrade MediaWiki.) —Emufarmers(T|C) 02:40, 29 November 2010 (UTC)
Deletion caused creation email
I apologize if this is in the wrong place.
MediaWiki: 1.16.0
PHP: 5.2.4 (cgi-fcgi)
MySQL: 5.1.39-log
I have just recently deleted a page at starfoxwiki.org, and the system sent me an email that i created a page. Is this a bug in the software? or is it something we could of done wrong in our custom set up?
- We have no Extentions related to email (See [3])
- I have it selected to "E-mail me when a page on my watchlist is changed" and to "Add pages I delete to my watchlist"
Any ideas i how to fix this? Bud0011 (talk) 04:21, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

Initial user was not created by installer
Hi all. Sorry if it's a noob question, but I'm kind of a new with administrating MediaWiki =) So, I've got this problem - no initial user after install :( FAQ says:
Alter the database
* Register a new account using the regular method (Special:UserLogin).
* Check the user ID in Special:Preferences.
* Execute the following SQL statement against the database:
o INSERT INTO user_groups ( ug_user, ug_group ) VALUES ( <id>, 'bureaucrat' ), ( <id>, 'sysop' );
<id> above should be replaced with the appropriate user ID which you can see on the user's preference page
Well, I just don't get it. What I need to do? And where? I created a new user with ID "1", and then?... 92.243.182.137 (talk) 20:41, 29 November 2010 (UTC)
- Meh, probably just be easier to add:
$wgAddGroups['user'] = true;- to the bottom of your LocalSettings.php, then log into your wiki as that user, and use special:userrights to add yourself to the Sysop (Administrator) and bureaucrat groups. Then make sure to remove that line from LocalSettings.php, and you are all set (Its very important to remove said line from localsettings.php afterwards, as it allows anyone to change group permissions).
- p.s. See Manual:$wgAddGroups for info on what the above actually does. Bawolff 00:32, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
Multiple account creation spam - IP block unhelpful
This page is constantly under attack, despite the numerous ip blocks from the same person, is unsuccessful, as new account is created immediately after. Duplicated key in MySQL when re-introducing key after running mwdumper
Hi all,
I have imported the latest XML dump with mwdumper.jar. After a few times of uncompleted import, i follow the suggestions of the mailing-list that I removed all the key and indexes for the page, text and revision table. Well, it runs like a rocket after that.
However, i found a problem when i wish to re-introduce those index to the database after the dump finished. For primary key, there is no issues. But i failed to restore some unique key, such as:
CREATE INDEX name_title ON page (page_title) USING BTREE;
It will return duplicated key 'page_title" error.
If i choose to make the key with NON UNIQUE option, it will success but i cannot further add index for the 'page_title' column anymore. As the default setup of the page table contains two indexes for 'page_title', I just wanna know how to resemble the original DB setup. The same thing happens to the revision table.
Can anyone give me some hints in how to recreate those keys? Thank you. Waterfallbay (talk) 01:57, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
Transcluding onlyinclude and includeonly tags
- short question
Is there a way to let a template include <includeonly><onlyinclude>{date}</onlyinclude></includeonly> when transcluded?
- longer explaination for question
I'll try to explain it with this table:
| Page name: | Template(in this case: "template:update") | Page between(in this case: "update page") | Final page(in this case: "item page") |
|---|---|---|---|
| use: | add a notice to "update page" | show information about the update, and when transcluded show the date of it only |
Only have the text between the onlyinclude tags included |
This is because at the RuneScape Wiki i am trying to automate the update date. Because there is always a link to the update page on the item page, and the update page has the date on it, i want the update page to have an additional note with the date entered(between onlyinclude tags) and i don't want it to appear on the update page itself(between includeonly tags). All update pages have the template:Update on it, with the parameter {date} so I want template:update to add <includeonly><onlyinclude>{date}</onlyinclude></includeonly> to the update page so that when the item page has on it, it shows the date in "dd month yy" automatically without needing to add that yourself.
I hope someone can help me. Joeytje50 (talk) 08:14, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
MediaWiki acknowledgments in help system
Hello,
My company is integrating MediaWiki 1.16.0 (with MySQL 5.1.51 64-bit and PHP 5.3.3) into one of its products.
From a help perspective, we are thinking of creating a very limited set of topics (we only need a small set) that are fully integrated into our "end user" help system for our overall product. While we will glean important info from the MediaWiki help, we will not copy it verbatim - especially given we only need a very small subset of topics & use a different style guide / information design approach.
Are we required to acknowledge MediaWiki in those help topics in our help system at all?
I have read the important note at the top of this page: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Contents ...which indicates that the help "can be freely copied into fresh wiki installations and/or distributed with MediaWiki software." However, my question is a little different, as we will write a "lighter" and "smaller" version of help topics (that adhere to our own style guide) on an extremely limited subset of features.
Many thanks, Mary Mary nh2010 (talk) 18:56, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
