MonoBook is a skin. It was the previous default skin for Wikimedia Foundation websites since MediaWiki 1.3, as the replacement for the old Standard skin. It became the most popular and most widely supported skin in the MediaWiki ecosystem until it was finally superseded by the Vector skin as the default on May 13, 2010 (MediaWiki 1.17, git #2833b07a), as a result of the efforts of the Wikipedia Usability Initiative to improve Wikipedia user experiences and potentially draw in more contributor participation. It served as a common backup for Vector and is still present on many wikis using older versions of MediaWiki software.

MonoBook does not receive significant user experience or accessibility improvements any longer. Please use other skins like Vector instead.

Installation[edit]

This skin is included in the MediaWiki download tarball. You only need to install it separately if you installed MediaWiki using a different method.

  • Download and place the file(s) in a directory called MonoBook in your skins/ folder.
  • Add the following code at the bottom of your LocalSettings.php:
wfLoadSkin( 'MonoBook' );
  • YesY Done - Navigate to Special:Version on your wiki to verify that the skin is successfully installed.

To users running MediaWiki 1.24 or earlier:

The instructions above describe the new way of installing skins using wfLoadSkin(), since MediaWiki 1.25. If you need to install this skin in earlier versions, instead of wfLoadSkin( 'MonoBook' );, you need to use:

require_once "$IP/skins/MonoBook/MonoBook.php";

(To run an skin on an earlier release, you may need to download the version of it tagged for that release from Special:SkinDistributor.)
