It became the most popular and most widely supported skin in the MediaWiki ecosystem until it was finally superseded by the Vector skin as the default on May 13, 2010 (MediaWiki 1.17, ), as a result of the efforts of the Wikipedia Usability Initiative to improve Wikipedia user experiences and potentially draw in more contributor participation. It served as a common backup for Vector and is still present on many wikis using older versions of MediaWiki software.
This skin is included in the MediaWiki download tarball. You only need to install it separately if you installed MediaWiki using a different method.

- Add the following code at the bottom of your LocalSettings.php:
wfLoadSkin( 'MonoBook' );
- Done - Navigate to Special:Version on your wiki to verify that the skin is successfully installed.
To users running MediaWiki 1.24 or earlier:
The instructions above describe the new way of installing skins using
wfLoadSkin(), since MediaWiki 1.25. If you need to install this skin in earlier versions, instead of
wfLoadSkin( 'MonoBook' );, you need to use:

In 2013, MonoBook became primarily supported by volunteer developers, not the Wikimedia Foundation. As of 2019, it is one of the four volunteer-supported skins used on Wikimedia projects: MonoBook, Timeless, Cologne Blue, and Modern.

Look for this skin's name in Wikimedia's CommonSettings.php and InitialiseSettings.php configuration files to see where it's installed.
