Rename section for consistency

[edit]

On 2006 the name of the first section of the sidebar was changed from "navigation" to "navigation (this wiki)" and in 2007 to "site".

Could someone change that back to "navigation" for consistency with other wikis? This would improve the compatibility of scripts (such as this, and these) which assume there is a 'p-navigation' section in the sidebar. Helder 13:52, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Its been awhile but i thought you could override the header to the side-bar through JS. In essence customizing it to your site design. Goldbishop 14:02, 2 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
My intention is not to change the text (from MediaWiki:Site) which is displayed in some skins, but instead to change the "id" of the first section from id="p-site" to id="p-navigation", which is the usual id of that section. For that, I think it is enough to move MediaWiki:Site to MediaWiki:Navigation and to update the message name on MediaWiki:Sidebar from "site" to "navigation". Helder 20:05, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
Let me do some more research about this but i thought i remembered there being a Common.CSS and a Common.js add to allow for the renaming of the section headers for SideBar, Site, or Navigation. Again, its been awhile so i will have to refind the information.
I understand what you are requesting, its just that it will most likely have to be done through the Common articles to avoid skin conflicts, potentially. Goldbishop 20:53, 5 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

It is not the header which I want to change, it is only the id (to be the same as in other wikis). Helder 17:33, 4 March 2012 (UTC)
the id is really only used for CSS-styling. If you want to change the style of the Menu then you need to change the CSS. Otherwise you will need to hack the source of the site and edit it there. 68.186.178.253 00:10, 5 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Add Current issues?

[edit]

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

Current issues should be in the sidebar. There's presently no link to a place where the issues of this wiki are discussed. The SD is now just for MW support.

(Also, Help, FAQ, and the manual could be better combined somehow.) Sj (talk) 16:19, 10 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Could be placed in "communication", or a new section "community" could be created, either incorporating communication or just moving some useless links out from top section: surely RC and community portal, perhaps also categories. Nemo 22:22, 21 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
I see that nowadays Communication is mostly a duplicate of Mailing lists and MediaWiki on IRC, with the additional problem that being a separate section it's collapsed on Vector and that only people who already know about mailing list (few) and IRC (very few) understand why they should be interested in them.
I think that ML and IRC should be removed; download and communication merged to navigation; and categories, community portal, recent changes moved to a new "mediawiki.org" section to which we could then add current issues. I'll do so in a few days if nobody disagrees. Nemo 16:45, 23 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Download

[edit]

I just noticed opening the wiki while logged out that on Vector the "Download" section is collapsed. This doesn't make any sense to me, is there any way to uncollapse it? Nemo 22:26, 21 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

How to contribute and Wikimedia Engineering

[edit]

Hi. I just added two links to the sidebar: How to contribute in the main section, and Wikimedia Engineering in the "Development" section.

How to contribute has become our main landing page for people interested in contributing to tech activities. It's linked to from the main page, but I'm guessing that many people arrive on mediawiki.org via other pages, so I think there's value in also adding it to the sidebar. I put it in the top section because it's not just about development.

Wikimedia Engineering is now an actually useful portal, and contains information that is automatically updated with recent content. I think there's value in adding it to the sidebar because of the large amount of work being done by Wikimedia engineers on MediaWiki. For volunteers, the link will make it easier to find up-to-date information about recent and future tech changes, and for Wikimedia engineers it will be easier to find the relevant pages to update. I see this as a win-win situation :)

I think these two links are uncontroversial, but if someone has concerns I'm happy to discuss this further to find a solution that satisfies everyone. guillom 08:07, 26 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

left menu problem

[edit]

Hello. Left menu in other language is not correctly. Such as, User help link leads to English only, not to other languages. I think that link must be /wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Help:Contents.

Category:Extensions is too.

Please fix this or tell me how to fix it. Meshkov.a (talk) 11:32, 2 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

You're right. This wasn't done before because the page didn't use the Translate extension yet, so the link was "translated" manually for the available languages. Qgil just changed it.[1] Nemo 13:17, 15 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Good catch! I have localized the links to Category:Extensions and Help:Contents. It's the first time I edit the sidebar at mediawiki.org, I will wait a bit before localizing more links. Suggestions welcome. Qgil (talk) 13:20, 15 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
The Manual is not quite ready... but we really should mark Manual:FAQ page for translation as one of our top priorities. Nemo 13:32, 15 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Bugzilla can be localized links. This page - https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Bugzilla Meshkov.a (talk) 09:16, 26 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

We link to Category:Top level with the label "Browse categories" as the first and so most prominent link in the MediaWiki.org section. I can't think of a use case which this serves at all, let alone well. Should we just drop it? Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 17:45, 15 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

How do you reformat sidebar

[edit]

I would like to have the sidebar in the wiki I work on to look like the sidebar here at mediawiki.org, without the dropdown menus. I have searched through mediawiki documentation and can't find anything that helps me with this. Can someone help me with this, please? Ahancie (talk) 15:43, 15 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

You want Manual:Interface/Sidebar. Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 15:48, 15 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

The source isn't corresponding to the Sidebar

[edit]

It's maybe because of Vector, but changing the page MediaWiki:Sidebar don't affect the sidebar of my wiki.

Translations into Chinese

[edit]

Translations are wrapped in code blocks. Chinese has several variants, so it's needed to create three subpages for a single message (/zh, /zh-hans, /zh-hant). Text in bold are the messages' name.

mw-download

/zh, /zh-hans: 下载MediaWiki

/zh-hant: 下載MediaWiki

mw-extensions

/zh, /zh-hans: 下载扩展

/zh-hant: 下載擴充功能

mw-communication

/zh, /zh-hans: 联系交流

/zh-hant: 聯絡交流

mw-bugtracker

/zh, /zh-hans: 漏洞跟踪器

/zh-hant: 錯誤追蹤器

The last request has been 4 years ago and still no one is implementing it, so I just post it again. Lakejason0 (talk) 06:50, 27 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

MediaWiki:mw-download /zh /zh-hans /zh-hant
MediaWiki:mw-extensions /zh /zh-hans /zh-hant
MediaWiki:mw-communication /zh /zh-hans /zh-hant
MediaWiki:mw-bugtracker /zh /zh-hans /zh-hant

Shirayuki (talk) 07:24, 27 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Should we create pages for all variants?
from my own experience using MediaWiki, only creating zh, zh-hans, zh-hant is fine; regional variants can fallback correctly. Lakejason0 (talk) 08:28, 27 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hmm... MediaWiki:Mw-download/zh contains both translations, but zh-hans and zh-hant do not fallback (see the sidebar). Shirayuki (talk) 08:57, 27 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yes Done by creating the above 12 pages. Shirayuki (talk) 10:28, 27 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
seems like regional variants fail to fallback on MediaWiki.org…… I didn’t expect this since only creating three works on my wiki’s sidebar.
Additional messages are below. Lakejason0 (talk) 15:10, 27 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
emmm, I tried using zh-tw and zh-cn here, and it seems that we also need to create these pages for regional variants (they are even missing another message mw-sandbox.) It doesn‘t make sense to me since my wiki works fine without creating regional variants messages for sidebar. Sorry for the inconvenience (I suffered from creating 8 pages for one message a lot of time, because some of the other messages can’t fallback correctly, but I didn’t realize that a multilingual wiki like MediaWiki.org cannot even correctly fallback the sidebar.)
so:
/zh-cn, /zh-sg, /zh-my should use /zh-hans;
/zh-tw, /zh-hk, /zh-mo should use /zh-hant.
/cdo doesn’t make sense to me; it seems like Vietnamese related.
mw-sandbox
/zh-hans, /zh-hant, /zh-cn, /zh-tw, /zh-hk, /zh-mo, /zh-my, /zh-sg: 沙盒
Sorry again and thanks for your help! that 12 pages is now correctly loaded and seems perfectly fine. Lakejason0 (talk) 15:08, 27 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, the question is not fully solved; the 4 messages in main thread for 6 regional variants are still needed to be created (24 messages), and another 8 messages for mw-sandbox too. Lakejason0 (talk) 09:53, 28 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Per Template:GetFallback and Template:GetFallback2, Chinese language has 25 variants:
| gan | gan-hans | ii | wuu | za | zh | zh-cn | zh-my | zh-sg = zh-hans
| ami | cdo | gan-hant | hak | lzh | nan | pwn | szy | tay | trv | zh-classical | zh-hk | zh-min-nan | zh-mo | zh-tw = zh-hant
Shirayuki (talk) 11:01, 28 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
a lot of them are not Mandarin, and I have no knowledge of them. I guess you can just proceed that fallback logic to create pages. Lakejason0 (talk) 15:23, 28 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
