[edit]Objective: Communities are supported to effectively close knowledge gaps through tools and support systems that are easier to access, adapt, and improve, ensuring increased growth in trustworthy encyclopedic content.
Key Result; By the end of Q2, implement and test two recommendations, both social and technical, to support languages onboarding for small language communities, with an evaluation to analyze community feedback.
- Five new languages added to Wikipedia as part of the experiment: Southern Ndebele, Pannonian Rusyn, Iban, Obolo, and Tai Nüa. Learn more in this blog post and phabricator task. These five languages represent millions of speakers across the globe.
-
Tai Nüa – Spoken by 720,000 people across Central Europe and Southeast Asia
-
Southern Ndebele – Spoken by 1.1 million people in South Africa
-
Iban – Spoken by 2.45 million people in Malaysia, Brunei, and Indonesia
-
Pannonian Rusyn – Spoken by 20,000 people in Serbia and Croatia
-
Obolo – Spoken by 318,000 people in Nigeria
- Quantitative and qualitative analysis conducted with a monitoring dashboard set up to track and measure activity on these wikis, including article count, editor count, page views, edit activity, Visual Editor usage, and Content Translation usage (access to the monitoring dashboard is limited). In addition, in-depth interviews were carried out with representatives from four of the five pilot wikis to document their experiences through the pre-incubator, incubator, and post-incubator phases, identify challenges, and explore how the Wikimedia Foundation and the broader community can better support the development of new language wikis. A report on both the quantitative and qualitative analysis will be released soon.
- Several technical improvements have been made with the goal of moving the
addWiki.phpmaintenance script from WikimediaMaintenance into MediaWiki core. Stay updated on the developments of this task: T352113.
