Language Onboarding and Development/Annual Planning

Here we capture planned key areas for Language Onboarding and Development for every fiscal year. The plan is intended to align with the Foundation's Annual plan, Product & Technology objectives, input from the community members and foundation staff members. The plan helps us to focus on certain initiatives every fiscal year and measure its impact through the year.
- 2026-27: This year our work focuses on implementing Language Lifecycle dashboards tailored to support specific stages of the Lifecycle of a Language. The dashboards will surface the most relevant priorities and signals that help communities strengthen their projects at the right time depending on the stage of a language edition either incubating, new, small or medium. We will focus on the New to Small Wikipedia stages (through continuing to work on the Wikipedia Starter kit ) and Small to Medium Wikipedia stages. More here
- 2025-26; This year, our work is intended align with the Foundation Annual plan and the Product & Technology multigeneral pillars. Specifically, our intial focus will entail contributing to the vital knowledge objective. We will then begin experimenting Lifecycle Dashboard for the New → Small Wikipedia stage that will focus on helping new wikis communities establishling the essential foundations of a sustainable wiki. We also will continue supporting communities particularly new & smaller ones are supported with internationalization and localisation workflows and features to help them move towards their goals. - 2024-25; This year, our work is intended align with the Foundation Annual plan and the Product & Technology multigeneral pillars, objectives and Key results and hypothesis. Specifically we will be contributing to knowledge equity goal specifically on closing knowledge gaps. We will continue supporting communities particularly new & smaller ones are supported with internationalization and localisation workflows and features to help them move towards their goals. - 2023-24; This year, we were part of Language Inclusion cross departmental initiative, which aimed to connecting the dots across disparate language diversity-focused work streams inside the Foundation, increase understanding of Wikimedia’s role in the internet language ecosystem, coordinate across movement stakeholders, and work toward a movement theory of change for language inclusion. A key deliverable was identifying 3 key recommendations for improving the social and technical infrastructure to support existing and new languages. More here
